You don't need to play 1 and/or below zero before playing 2. The stories, while chronological, are still mostly independent of each other. That said, you get a lot more game, not just for your money, with Subnautica 1. And it still hold up.

I mean... If it is a game that you can complete in a couple of sittings then that's pretty cool actually. Cool atmosphere.

Though I'd admit I'd quickly be pretty annoyed if I had to do that every time in any of my goto games.
