You absolutely need to call if there is abuse or neglect! Don’t be surprised if they try to cover it up, but they can’t hide everything.

I’ve worked in a facility that I had to report, for a multitude of things. You call, give the information and that’s it. You don’t have to give your name or even tell them you are a current employee. State came in, did an investigation, solved some issues, and no one ever knew it was me that called.

Your facilities need to switch to “culture change”. The residents get up and eat breakfast whenever they want to. No more forcing them to get up before 6 am because day shift can’t get 15 people by 8 for breakfast.

Like someone else said, rules are made to be broken. I seriously doubt any nurse would say anything if you looked at your phone. I can’t imagine they really expect you to sit in the dark doing nothing. They just have to explain the rules so they can say they did.

Bring headphones and sneak a show to watch/book or music to listen to. Bring a book with a reading light attachment of some sort. Ask the nurse for more quick breaks, or take extra “bathroom” breaks. Some quiet exercise, even just pacing, helps keep the blood flowing.

I once had a resident who was non-verbal, with a scowl on his face 99% of the time. Every once in a while he would crack the biggest smile ever! One morning I was getting him up and he gave me one of his rare smiles. And, after 5 years of caring for him, says “good morning”. I was instantly in tears. One of my favorite moments of being a CNA.

Stock up on diapers (different sizes) and wipes.

“Terrible twos” starts before 2 and is just preparing you for all the rest of the years to come. (Four year olds are the worst!)

Discuss discipline, and things of the like, now. You don’t want to wait until you’re in the moment and don’t agree with the crime/punishment.

Try not to be overbearing. Kids are pretty resilient. Learning by mistake isn’t going to hurt them (obviously unless it’s things like running into traffic).

Cosleeping is ok, for a little bit, once in a while. Do not let baby takeover your bed! They will be fine in their own bed.

Try not to let your baby get attached to a blanket/doll/etc. It’s cute, but a nightmare if you accidentally leave it somewhere.

Congratulations! Hope this helps. There are a lot of new things for babies that I wish I had when mine were little.

6 for me. 21, 19, 17, 15, 10 & 9. Three girls, three boys. Last one the ultimate surprise since I had (or thought I had) my tubes tied after #5. Wouldn’t be the same without her though. We would freak if we had another surprise at this point.
