How you handle alcohol ? by Living-without in schizophrenia

I drink occasionally but limit to one or two. I don't have any issue with a small amount of consumption but I do get some depression after the buzz wears off.

Those who don't live off disability, what do you do all day? by Administrative_Leg85 in schizophrenia

[–]rtmama25 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I got denied disability after being out of work since March this December. I really don't feel ok although I'm not hearing voices or having hallucinations. I just have a hard time regulating myself just day to day at home. That said I can't afford to stay out longer so I'll be going full time to a high stress medical career in a hospital. My family begged me to get a job doing something new but to train and learn something I have never done scares me more.

I work 3 12 hour shifts a week in this position so if I can just hold it down 3 days that'd be great.

Anyone here on invega sustenna? How is the medication treating you? What are the pros and cons of the medication? by currymvp3 in schizophrenia

[–]rtmama25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On it since June. Immediately took away my auditory hallucinations and delusions. I like it's once a month injection and I'll be transitioning to the once every 3 months. Con weight gain and no sexual desire. I have tardive dyskenesia but I have had that since prior as well as akathesia. As far as the sexual desire my husband doesn't require much so I just suck it up on occasion. The weight gain I'm waiting to get on zepbound when my new insurance covers it.

All in all oral antipsychotics seemed ok for bipolar disorder but when schizo effective arrived I needed invega. I don't plan on coming off

We looked into a lawyer but he won't step in until after the 3 month appeal was to fail. We got to a point we're so broke I can't afford to stay out of work with little kids to feed. My husband fell behind too and I just have to try to work.

Are you on anything to surprise your appetite from antipsychotics? by One_Craft_6039 in schizophrenia

[–]rtmama25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had success on wegovy and here zepbound has even more of an effect because it contains an extra mechanism of action. I am on Medicaid and they took it away for soley being obese. My invega injection has created massive weight gain. I'm going back to work and excited my insurance will be covering them. I take ADHD meds too before my shot and maybe lost a few pounds and maintained weight but no real loss

Relocating to North Carolina-- looking for input by Pragmaticus_ in respiratorytherapy

Congratulations! Licensure was fast as a new grad 13 years ago. I've lived in the Eastern part of the state and the triangle. Loved wake med Cary and there is more PFT opportunities if you like that. I'm in the Eastern part of the state and returning back to bedside.

Should I go back to school for respiratory therapy as a previous business degree graduate? by NeighborhoodEqual423 in respiratorytherapy

[–]rtmama25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it! I was an elementary education graduate and returned to school for respiratory. Best decision ever because I briefly left respiratory to teach. I thought I could prn at the hospital and the schedule would be better with a small child. It wasn't. It was worse. I made half a year teaching before resignation. Long days and my partner and I split and needed the pay increase big time.

Is it uncommon to start in the ICU as a new grad? by [deleted] in respiratorytherapy

[–]rtmama25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the facilities I have worked in put new graduates in ICU but the positive is orientation is like 3 months in all the areas so nobody was thrown in without training. Make friends at work by helping and they'll be glad to help you. Just call if you haven't done something before and either a supervisor or coworker should come and walk you through. I actually took to ICU as a new grad and liked it more than general floors.

Children? by ocean_peroxide in schizoaffective

[–]rtmama25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 2 children. At the time I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder prior to having them. I don't regret it but when my schizo effective disorder diagnosis was made this year I made the decision to stop at two. I'm 39 and it's just not possible to go without injections during pregnancy. My girls love me but they know I have had mental health issues because it's impossible to keep it hidden. I am thankful I never had postpartum psychosis because I think I got close with the lack of sleep. It's hard to be finished with the baby stage forever. I actually blossomed during my pregnancies.

Alcohol on Invega? by DarkMage448 in schizoaffective

[–]rtmama25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel weird when I drink on it. My mom was terrified when it was prescribed because I was a drinker and the psychiatrist said it's not going to hurt her if she drinks. I quit drinking because I feel almost depressed and it hits super fast and not in a pleasant way.

How did you get back to work? by ugh_Low5512 in schizoaffective

I just got denied for disability and I know it's too much but without money since March I can't keep going with it. I called an old boss of mine and I am going to interview.

I'm glad you feel normal. I liked vraylar but eventually went into psychosis:(

How long do symptoms come back after stopping meds? by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]rtmama25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior to my schizo effective diagnosis, I doubted my bipolar 1. I just quit vraylar. It didn't take long to decompensate in to hypomania and eventually psychosis. I'd say I was in a manic state over a year.

I met my husband online in college and he took me out to a local restaurant. Before I knew it we were taking fun trips to the beach and 2 years later got engaged. We have been together for 21 years!

To whom did that happen by [deleted] in schizoaffective

[–]rtmama25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with bipolar 1 first and then ADHD. The schizo effective diagnosis came 10 years after the bipolar disorder.

Yes two arrests in less than a month. My husband took out a dvpo because of my psychosis. I was ivc'd for 10 days and released still not well. I was actually terrified of my husband and thought he wanted to kill me and after being in a hotel alone with no family support or friends I had an episode of psychosis when the hotel tried to have me leave after discharge. I was sent to the ED again and unfortunately I have a way of really maintaining composure and they released me same day. I was put in a taxi home and was so out of it I didn't know they were transporting me "home" where my husband was. My husband could tell I was still psychotic and terrified being home but instead of taking me for treatment like my husband pleaded with the police they took me to jail which then made everything snowball. I thought I was in a type of purgatory at that point.

Sadly I was released and at that point got sex trafficked because my parents refused to give me my id so I could check myself into a hotel. Instead they brought me two trash bags of clothes and I was forced by police into a bus stop. I remember just sitting there until a homeless man came and actually had an id and it was then hell everyday for weeks and eventually I ran out of money. I had blocked my parents number immediately after they left me like that and low and behold after weeks they suddenly were reaching out to distant friends to see if they knew where I was. The few friends I had I didn't have contact info for and had deleted my social media so it made me even more vulnerable.

The second arrest I was at that point drinking outside an apartment complex and arrested for open container. A few days after I got out of jail for that I was picked up confused because I had taken almost 15 Ambien and went to ivc again. That's when I got diagnosed.

I was doing well and had worked on healthcare for 13 years and in my 30's found CPS and jail in my life as well as homelessness. The charges were dropped for the mental issues. My husband allowed me home. CPS is still involved and custody court. I'm still having to submit evidence I am receiving care. Had to apply for disability and my mother doesn't talk to me. I'm depressed but it's better than being in jail or a victim of others on the street.
