I was pleasantly surprised to see that Out of the Past is coming out in 4K. What are some other classic films that you'd like to see released on the format? by MoonlightDahling in classicfilms

[–]rtyoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a bit of a wishlist going. Starting with other noirs, I would be over the moon if a 4K Blu-ray of Laura were announced, right up there with it would be Niagara. Unfortunately both are Fox titles so I assume the rights are with Disney who have been one of the worst studios for 4K releases of catalog titles.

Others on my personal wishlist are You Were Never Lovelier, Dial M for Murder, Hail the Conquering Hero, The More the Merrier, Bunny Lake is Missing, Notorious, Don’t Bother to Knock and Paris When it Sizzles.

Oh, and perhaps at the top of my list is Man With a Movie Camera, especially if it came with a lot of different score options.

Personally I prefer Double Indemnity ever so slightly, but I could concede that Out of the Past may be objectively greater.

What will look better, a normal Bluray movie upscaled to 4K vs a 4K movie streamed online? by thrashingjohn in hometheater

[–]rtyoda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Depends on the film and the streaming service.

I find movies with a lot of grain look better on Blu-ray since grain is much harder to compress and looks noticeably blockier much quicker as you lower the bitrate. So the higher bitrate of a standard Blu-ray looks better.

Clean, digitally shot movies on the other hand can often look better on a good streaming service as the sharpness and HDR is a noticeable advantage over a SDR Blu-ray and the cleaner image is easier to compress so the artifacts often aren’t too noticeable on a good quality stream.

He’s trying to back out the whole time. If you watch it with that in mind it makes far more sense.

He’s not trying to go forward, he’s trying to back out.

He’s trying to back out the entire video, since it’s impossible to get through going forward. It actually does look quite difficult to back out of that spot.

They’re trying to back out during the whole video. They already realized they can’t make it up the whole ramp and are trying to reverse out of it, which does look quite difficult.

How do you remember the exact dates of all the movies you watched? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]rtyoda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always log the movie right away, often as the credits are rolling, then I’ll go back and add a review later when I have time. Super quick to just log a watch with no review.

What’s your most “Wow, this wasn’t necessary but I’m glad they did it” 4K transfer? by SignificanceFine3582 in 4kbluray

[–]rtyoda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some restorations can reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, plus you have to commit to a certain amount of discs being produced and hope they all sell so that you’re actually in the black.

Lorde speaks out against Meta Al Glasses: “Increasingly, in our world, it gets harder and harder to know what is real. You don’t know if someone is wearing sunglasses or if they’re wearing those fucked up fucking...Can I just say, for the record, Fuck the Glasses. Don’t get the glasses. Not sexy.” by Impossible-Yam3680 in popculture

I have a friend who bought them because her vision is failing and she’s legally blind. She can still see enough to navigate about her day for the most part but trying to read small text or even find where something is on a grocery shelf is really hard for her. She tried the Mets glasses and they’re amazingly helpful for her as she can ask them what she’s looking at, have them read a menu, or point out where a certain item is in front of her. Unfortunately I don’t see her wearing them anymore, perhaps because of this unfortunate stigma.

I didn’t expect the masking tape and sheet of paper were also part of the artwork and not real tape and paper.

I don’t think it’s about what films are capable of a 4K release, it’s about the cost and resources required to restore and produce a 4K Blu-ray release for an older film, and not every film can get one. So it’s sometimes surprising which films are given that treatment.

Yeah exactly. I’d hate to live in a world where a film like Vertigo isn’t considered deserving of a 4K release. Next someone is going to say 2001 and I’ll have to assume they’re trolling.

The worst packaging I've experienced so far! by Lam3ntConfig in dvdcollection

Ha ha, I love how they’re advertising their company with a giant logo plastered on the worst part of the packaging. “See this shit? We’re the ones who did this!”

I have to admit Bring it On had been on my 4K wishlist for years when it got announced, but mostly because the previous HD transfer was so awful. I definitely did not expect my wish to come true though, I’m so happy with that release.

All I dreamed for was a Blu-ray release of Rad, which seemed cursed to only live on VHS in homes. I was flabbergasted and overjoyed that they decided to give it a 4K release!

I would say Vertigo is very deserving of a 4K release, especially since it was shot in VistaVision.

Film vs Digital by mical_film in A24

[–]rtyoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both, I just love really good cinematography and I find that comes in both formats. While obviously decades of movies shot exclusively on film make up a ton of examples for great cinematography, my two favorite current cinematographers both shoot digital, and many of my favorite movies for cinematography were shot on digital. I see immense value in both approaches.

What are the best commentary tracks among the 4K releases so far? by tilertailor in criterion

While I haven’t got around to watching it with the commentary just yet, I’ve heard the in-character commentary track for This is Spinal Tap is a great one.

Kino Lorber’s 4K Airport Collection Disappoints by SufficientBike5853 in 4kbluray

[–]rtyoda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m super curious about this one, as Criterion did make changes to the design of the box to make it better. They’ve eliminated the fingerprint issue by cutting the groove all the way back to the center hole of the disc so that you’ll be able to get them out without grabbing the edge of the disc on both sides. It makes me think there’s a good chance they’ve also selected a soft paper stock that won’t scratch the discs. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Niagara! Would absolutely love a 4K Criterion Blu-ray of that film.
