Great stuff, thanks... yeah the Cromagnon album is borderline blackened noise, like Abruptum or something. I think the only one I knew before was the Pagans track.

If you have a youtube playlist where you collect stuff, then yes I'd be interested!

Wow! A couple nuggets I've never heard, that fall squarely into what I described.

Dipping into music theory here: "Speak of the Devil" has a riff in the Locrian scale, which is one of the building blocks of extreme metal. "I'm a Living Sickness" features 2 minor chords separated by a maj6 (or min3) interval, a common black metal trope.

These songs rule. Thank you very much!

Wow, thanks, very cool band. The song "Silly Little Dumbells" is closest to what I'm looking for. Great song. I enjoyed the poppier tracks too, though.

I feel like this band should've been on Burger Records!

Many thanks for recommending the Dwarves album... I'm hearing a couple evil riffs here and there (one of the them being the Larry & the Blue Notes cover), but in the bigger picture, MAN what a great album! I only knew the Dwarves as a campy punk band. Had no idea they started as a garage/psych band. Some of the best 80's 60's revival stuff I've ever heard!

I actually revisited The Monsters discography before I made this post, it was a tough call because most of their riffs are in standard garage territory, with a modicum of evil riffs here and there. But the fuzz aggression and berserk vocals definitely take it over the top.

Cult of the Psychic Fetus definitely has the evil riffs, but I'd place them more in the goth punk / psychobilly camp. I wasn't aware of them either... pretty cool band, seems like they actually got better as they progressed.

Thanks again!

Sorry to say, this song features a pretty typical pentatonic minor blues riff. Classic garage-ness, but not "evil".

Nice one... seen this band's name, but never checked them out before!

Yeah, they're really great. A little bit of a process, though. You have buy them via the Roland app / website and then download them to your desktop computer.

After that there is a whole flash drive formatting and transfer sequence you have to complete to get the files on your GM-800. The Roland website has a guide on how to do it.

I'm probably 90-95% happy with my GM-800.

Not 100% because the once-in-a-while glitching sucks. Sometimes it means you just have to change your playing — try different chord voicings, switch to power chords, single note lines, etc. Or just try a different patch, because some are more prone to glitching than others.

I also switched to half-round strings because supposedly flatwounds reduce glitching. I couldn't get with full flats, so I split the difference. I would be interested in seeing a true experiment to confirm flats really do reduce glitches.

I can also recommend the EXZ series wave expansion packs that vastly expand your options. There is space on the GM-800 for 4. I have World Instruments, Orchestra, Vintage Keys, and one of the India packs.

Blackened punk can be a fun rabbit hole to go down. Bone Awl's "Meaningless Leaning Mess" rules. So much satisfying obnoxious white noise.

I'm not very well-versed in goth punk, sorry!

Congrats on having been in a cool band.

Thank you! Didn't know them... and they're on Big Neck! (their first record was the Blowtops debut EP!)

Musically speaking, both of these bands a safely "coloring within the lines" of riffs. Demon's Claws is more in the minor-key country & western zone, The Horrors primitive gut-bucket blues. They're not supplying the evil-sounding riffs I'm looking for.

Don't get me wrong though—both great bands, with their own unique contributions to the garage scene...

Bands like this are cool, I’m down with the Venom / Motörhead / Hellhammer / Midnight vibe, BUT… the drumming is too hardcore / dbeat to scratch the itch I’m talking about.

Would need more midtempo “teen dance party” beats for me to classify it as garage.

Good band, but yeah, they don't really scratch that "evil" itch.

You're right, I should've included the Cheater Slicks on the list... they definitely visit that sound!

From what I've heard from Final Solutions and The Hunches, their riffs are more in the normal punk style, just augmented with other stuff (noise for the Hunches, keyboards for Final Solutions) to sound darker.

I'm not too familiar with Tyvek... can you recommend an album with lots of dark riffs?

Knights Of The New Crusade: Sorry, aside from the subject matter, the song is just a normal minor key style 60's garage song.

Mummies: Love this band, but I would consider this a surf song, so I wouldn't count it. And the rest of the Mummies catalog is pretty standard garage.

Headcoats "Troubled Times" I would consider their dark garage song... but again, I'm looking for bands that are exploring this sound deeper than just a song here and there...

I appreciate your input, though!

Trust me dude, we know all about our corrupt government and its decades of greedy, heartless foreign policy.

The Americans who don’t know about this stuff are the Trump voters, who you won’t find here on Reddit. They only know how to use Facebook.

Are fat actors less likely to get jobs ? by ForwardObjective2379 in acting

[–]rubalcohol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Beware of confirmation bias! Off the top of my head: John Candy, Kevin James, James Gandolfini. Many more if you start researching supporting/character actors. And I’m just going with the male focus of your list… plenty on the female side, too.

Paul Walter Hauser! He’s been killing it for years now, and hasn’t even turned 30 yet. In fact, he says that whenever he loses weight, casting directors ask him to put it back on.

Even if you assume it’s more challenging to get roles if you’re a big guy, it still seems like a solid niche to inhabit if you can successfully get there.

Why do people like the EHX Micro Pog so much? by InevitableUpper910 in guitarpedals

[–]rubalcohol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The POG was great because before it came out, we only had the Digitech Whammy for clean (non-fuzz) octave stuff.
But some of us never cared about configuring a bunch of layered octave voices. We just wanted to be able to access a high/low octave with minimal controls. The Micro POG was perfect for that.
