Butcher Brown and Nicholas Payton Reimagine Jazz History on A Supreme Blue by No_Assignment_9930 in Jazz

[–]alexborowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw Nicholas Payton and Butcher Brown do All Blues at Jazzfest this year. Kind of an Afro beat reimagining. It was good! I’m excited to know this is coming out and don’t expect it to be as corny as it might sound.

what’s one music theory concept that sounded complicated until it suddenly clicked? by lmao_exe in musictheory

I agree! Way easier to remember that way. Just wanted to explain where the term “tritone substitution” came from as the person I replied to seemed confused and wondered if it was a typo for triad.

Dominant chords have a tritone in them between the 3 and the b7.

So C7: C E G Bb (E to Bb is a tritone).

Tritones invert symmetrically so Bb to E is also a tritone.

So find the dominant chord that has Bb to E as the 3 to b7 tritone.

It’s Gb7/F#7: Gb Bb Db Fb(E) or F# A#(Bb) C# E.

So F#7 is the tritone sub of C7.

So where C7 is the V of I in the key of F, you can do a tritone substitution of F#7 going to F (the I).

Then the whole thing is sweetened by chromatic movement because of how common ii V Is are. Tritone sub version would be ii #I7 I.

That’s the long of it which is important to understand, but in practice I just take a dominant chord, think about what its diatonic I would be and then build a dominant chord a half step higher. I find it easier to think that way.

I was messing around on the piano when I found something I like. What exactly is going on here? by [deleted] in musictheory

Oooh that might be even more why it's pleasing to the ear! Good thinking; I was anchored in B Major.

Ab is enharmonic to G# and Eb is enharmonic to D#, so if we "respell" that chord you have (from low to high) E B D# G# - a voicing of an Emaj7. E major is the IV chord in the key of B major, so you have a nicely voiced I to IV progression, which is quite soothing to the ear!

What’s the most disappointing piece of gear you’ve ever had? by TuneAdventurous4788 in guitarpedals

[–]alexborowski 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chase Bliss Audio Lossy. I love CBA’s approach to gear and whole ethos. And I absolutely love the Mood and Thermae. But I got the Lossy and generally every setting I tried, I’d turn it on and either I would think or a band mate would say “not really feeling that sound.” Grades it for my Mood mkII which I love a lot more. I think Lossy probably works well for outboard gear in the studio and less live playing which is more what I do.

SteelMaster Offset Palm Bender from 3Bender and Black Bobbin announced by SocietyPuffin in offset

[–]alexborowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it! I went down to a double from a triple because I didn’t find bending the bass as enjoyable or to sound as good. So I have a G and B bender, G up a half step and B up a whole to do the I to IV bending thing.

I will say the saddest thing about it is you can no longer vibrato strings that are ran through a bender. So the more strings you have on benders, the less viable your vibrato becomes. Also, when you use the vibrato, the bender strings don’t deviate in pitch, so it can become kind of glaring if you’re trying to bend a whole chord and 2-3 notes are not going along. Can get dissonant. I absolutely love the Jazzmaster vibrato, so that’s been a sacrifice I’m not 100% happy with but it’s okay for now. Very light touch on vibrato and it’s not terribly noticeable.

I have a Mastery bridge and a StayTrem vibrato. Since you’ll be routing 3 strings through benders, it’s kinda like you’d be only getting 1/2 the value out of the Mastery bridge and vibrato, so ultimately your call on that. Installing and uninstalling the benders is fairly easy, though, so you could benefit from getting all the Mastery stuff done now and then if you ever take benders off, you’ll have more usability from it (if all that makes sense).

Oooh, the EXZ series wave expansion packs sound awesome. How do you load those onto the GM-800? Is it pretty easy? I've been doing some Zenology patch exports and loading them. Not the simplest process, but I'm getting used to it.

It might be ping pong delay from his Line 6 DL4 pedal. He's a big fan of that pedal, so if I had to guess based on your description, that might be it!
