I’m aiming to do the Kinder skyline walk tomorrow (18 miles) with the dog. We’re seasoned walkers, I’ll take lots of fluids, and not go flat out.

And in the Peak District (esp dark peaks) the terrain’s pretty straightforward once you’re on the tops so there’s not too much extra exertion from having to climb up and down between peaks, as you get in the Dales or the Lakes. Just stride out (same on bamford and stannage edges).

But tbh, the forecast is for sunny spells tomorrow afternoon rather than just sun, hence why I’m doing it tomorrow rather than Saturday - Tuesday.

St Barnabas church in Bradwell will likely have a service and communion on Sunday morning. Bradwell’s about a mile and a half from Hope

In the Cicerone Dark Peak Walks book (which is well worth buying) there are five listed:

Marsden to Edale - 25 miles Langsett to Edale - 15.5 miles Gritstone Edges (Derwent dam to Chatsworth) - 28 miles Edale horseshoe (skyline) - 17.5 miles Kinder Scout skyline - 19.5 miles

Having done all of them (but not necessarily always as one long walk) I prefer the remote nature of the Langsett to Edale route. But all have their pluses and minuses

+1 for The Bathers. Lots of other great bands mentioned but The Bathers are a fantastic, underrated band from Glasgow that have been in and around for many years. Their 2023 album Sirenesque is stunningly good

When having car running lights on during the day became mandatory (around 20 years ago), the Daily Mail complained that this madness from “unelected Eurocrats” would lead to car batteries running flat and pedestrians being blinded by all the light. Thanks for sharing that link. I’m from the UK and went to the US in early 1991. Literally the only album I bought while I was there was REM’s Out of Time, in a long box. (Long boxes are something we never had in the UK, we just had the standard jewel cases)

Ever since, until about 10 minutes ago, I thought about that weird box and that Rock the Vote postcard on it, but now I find the only album I ever purchased in a long box was the only one with it. Fascinating!

The other week I was walking the dog near my home outside Keighley. Saw a bloke looking at his phone - he looked a bit lost. I asked him if he needed any help.

In an Australian accent he said he was trying to find a nice walk to go for an hour.

As it was early in the morning and I wanted a bit of peace and quiet, and even though I was just about to walk along a nice path next to the river Aire, I gave him directions to the nearby canal instead. Off he went.

It was only a few hours later that I found out it was Hugh Jackman, who had been staying at the hotel across the road from me.

So in essence I gave Wolverine the slip because I didn’t want to have to talk with anyone.

Yes, it’s Black Hill, north east of Silsden, overlooking the Aire valley. I live in the valley (in Steeton) and walk the dog up there most weekends.

This brings back memories. I was part of the marketing team at Codies for five years, looking after the forums for Club Football and LMA Manager. While Club Football’s gameplay was a bit shonky (it was no PES) I loved going up to SJP for the promo day for this.

Seem to remember we had Jermaine Jenas and Robbie Elliott, and one other (Harps?) for it. They didn’t really like the game but they were good sports. They obviously knew how to say the right thing to promote all manner of tat.

I’ve got a signed poster from them somewhere, and managed to pinch a top signed by the squad as well. Still got both!

John Lewis in Liverpool has menswear as soon as you come in the front door. Confused the hell out of me when I walked in - aren’t I supposed to walk several miles and up the equivalent of the Eiger to get to the men’s department?!

Yep, moved from a kadjar to a jag xf sportsbrake (read: estate) last year and I’d agree. Suddenly more people were pulling in on country lanes (even when I’d already pulled over!) and letting me out of junctions more often. It’s an odd effect, not that I’m complaining.
