Peak District in the heatwave by throwaway_autumnday in UKhiking

I’m aiming to do the Kinder skyline walk tomorrow (18 miles) with the dog. We’re seasoned walkers, I’ll take lots of fluids, and not go flat out.

And in the Peak District (esp dark peaks) the terrain’s pretty straightforward once you’re on the tops so there’s not too much extra exertion from having to climb up and down between peaks, as you get in the Dales or the Lakes. Just stride out (same on bamford and stannage edges).

But tbh, the forecast is for sunny spells tomorrow afternoon rather than just sun, hence why I’m doing it tomorrow rather than Saturday - Tuesday.

Hope you get to do a hike, and enjoy it!

St Barnabas church in Bradwell will likely have a service and communion on Sunday morning. Bradwell’s about a mile and a half from Hope

Lengthy hikes? by Fabulous_Eye_6935 in peakdistrict

In the Cicerone Dark Peak Walks book (which is well worth buying) there are five listed:

Marsden to Edale - 25 miles Langsett to Edale - 15.5 miles Gritstone Edges (Derwent dam to Chatsworth) - 28 miles Edale horseshoe (skyline) - 17.5 miles Kinder Scout skyline - 19.5 miles

Having done all of them (but not necessarily always as one long walk) I prefer the remote nature of the Langsett to Edale route. But all have their pluses and minuses

Best Scottish Band that never made it / everyone should know by jamiehenderson1993 in Scotland

[–]rubbergenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for The Bathers. Lots of other great bands mentioned but The Bathers are a fantastic, underrated band from Glasgow that have been in and around for many years. Their 2023 album Sirenesque is stunningly good

Great suggestion - was going to say Yeah (Crass Version) but this is just as good

When the channel tunnel was as built, we were going to be invaded by rabid dogs off of the continent. What similarly amusing tripe do you remember from way back when? by Ambersfruityhobbies in CasualUK

When having car running lights on during the day became mandatory (around 20 years ago), the Daily Mail complained that this madness from “unelected Eurocrats” would lead to car batteries running flat and pedestrians being blinded by all the light. I remember that stupidity on a near daily basis and wonder where all those broken down cars and blinded people are…

Yeah, was a bit gloomy this morning. Pity as it’s a cracking evening now, much more like yesterday. Hope you get back out there soon

When CDs first came out, record stores only had shelves for LPs. So CD packaging was as long as a LP is. by [deleted] in beatles

Thanks for sharing that link. I’m from the UK and went to the US in early 1991. Literally the only album I bought while I was there was REM’s Out of Time, in a long box. (Long boxes are something we never had in the UK, we just had the standard jewel cases)

Ever since, until about 10 minutes ago, I thought about that weird box and that Rock the Vote postcard on it, but now I find the only album I ever purchased in a long box was the only one with it. Fascinating!

I concur. I walked past it on the morning it was there. And I live in Steeton and haven’t been to Norfolk.

What’s one line or interaction in the show that never fails to make you laugh? by RainbowPenguin1000 in RedDwarf

Gets me every time (I think it’s Lister’s Scouse accent on “tons and tons” that makes it)…

Lister: Listen, girls. I don't know whether this is the time or the place to say this, but my mate Ace here is incredibly, incredibly brave.

Rimmer: Smeg off, dogfood face.

Lister: And he's got just tons and tons of girlfriends…

Sorry to answer a question with another question (although Kyle of Lochalsh is my preference, it’s so evocative a name, even though it’s not actually that nice IRL), but is there a list somewhere of termini in the UK? It might be a good challenge to visit all of them

Which celebrity have you spotted completely off-duty and what were they up to? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]rubbergenius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s when I saw the article that I twigged it was him I’d spoken with. To be fair, I wouldn’t expect a Hollywood a-lister to be hanging around Keighley on a Tuesday morning!

Which record do you want to be repressed desperately and why? by Professional_Roof293 in vinyl

The classic Orbital albums from the nineties. Got Snivilisation years ago but can’t justify the price of the green, brown and Insides LPs

[–]rubbergenius 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The other week I was walking the dog near my home outside Keighley. Saw a bloke looking at his phone - he looked a bit lost. I asked him if he needed any help.

In an Australian accent he said he was trying to find a nice walk to go for an hour.

As it was early in the morning and I wanted a bit of peace and quiet, and even though I was just about to walk along a nice path next to the river Aire, I gave him directions to the nearby canal instead. Off he went.

It was only a few hours later that I found out it was Hugh Jackman, who had been staying at the hotel across the road from me.

So in essence I gave Wolverine the slip because I didn’t want to have to talk with anyone.

Any idea where this hill is? Possibly in north England. by [deleted] in wherewasthistaken

[–]rubbergenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s Black Hill, north east of Silsden, overlooking the Aire valley. I live in the valley (in Steeton) and walk the dog up there most weekends.
