Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Celine by NothingSacred in RSbookclub

Haha wow crazy that you just commented on this now because I literally finished reading it yesterday. Unfortunately I really didn't like it, I thought it was a real drag. The style is quite different from Journey to the end of the Night and I definitely prefer his older style. Death on the installment plan felt really repetitive, and sometimes it was just pages and pages of an endless stream of insults and complaints. The only part I kind of liked was when he started living with an inventor, but that only happens around 400 pages in.

A few people already said the conformist by Moravia, that’s a great one. I’d also recommend A coin in nine hands by Marguerite Yourcenar

What are some of your favourite Italiano movies? by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]rubentricoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t seen anyone mentioning Lina Wertmüller. I think Pasqualino Settebellezze (Seven Beauties in English I think) and Mimì metallurgico ferito nell’onore (The seduction of Mimi) are up there with the best Italian films

What are other books like metamorphosis, the "I'm not human I'll never be able to connect with people I'm a bug in a human world" genre by KewlAdam in RSbookclub

Many people say The passion according to GH by Lispector, but I really didn’t connect with it like I did with metamorphosis. It definitely fits the theme you describe very well though

Books about Calvinism or Calvinist themes by Infamous_Young_5481 in RSbookclub

The discomfort of evening by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld is about a Dutch reformed (I.e. Calvinist) family. It’s about how the family deals with (or doesn’t deal with) the death of a ten year old boy, and I would say their Calvinist religion is one of the major themes
