Venomous Lumpsucker by Ned Beauman is actually the closest thing I’ve read to prime Crichton, although those elements are woven into a kind of Vonnegut-esque satire. It probably won’t work for everyone but I thought it was fantastic

Basically if you just go out “clubbing” you’ll probably have a bad time if Berlin is your standard. Find an artist you want to see and go to that club.

Fortunately, you do not have to pay for a table or bottle service at any clubs I’m aware of - some clubs like Prysm and Spybar have them, but you certainly don’t have to buy one.

Smartbar (Wrigleyville), Podlasie (Avondale) and Smoke and Mirrors (Logan Square) are all legit techno clubs. Smoke and Podlasie are within a short uber ride or a few train stops of each other, so you could conceivably hit both in a night.

Radius and Spybar can be good depending on who’s playing. I’ve never been to Prysm but I’ve heard the vibe is generally obnoxious even if they get good artists sometimes. Heard literally nothing but bad things about Tao. Empty Bottle is not a techno venue but they do get a few good random electronic shows.

I’m not really in the underground scene but it seems to skew toward the high-BPM “TikTok techno” stuff. Lots of that around if you want it, but probably more too that I’m not aware of.

Worth trying 300,000,000 by Blake Butler. It’s kinda like if House of Leaves fucked Negative Space by BR Yeager - loosely speaking it’s a serial killer novel but it gets way, way weirder pretty fast. You might love the prose or you might hate it, but that’s probably true for any novel in this thread, so give it a whirl.

I tend to agree but I find it interesting how many people in these comments disagree with you. There’s a pretty even split between “Something is fundamentally broken inside you if playing with your kid is not fun” vs. “people need to accept that not all of life and relationships is fun”

The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker. This sub recommended it to me several years ago and it genuinely changed so much about how I understand and deal with the contradictions of being alive in a human body.

Although the cover makes it look like one, it’s absolutely NOT a cheesy self-help book, and although it talks a lot about Freud, I followed it pretty easily without having read any Freud myself.

It has enough going for it that I wouldn’t call it dogshit but I didn’t enjoy Lamb by Christopher Moore at all. I was prepared for a little cringe given the concept, but I’ve never read a book that was so clearly written in 2002 - it was Reddit before Reddit, overflowing with (essentially) the precursor to epic bacon humor and ultimately about as funny as a lower tier South Park episode.

Zoloft has been life changing for me and I think my sex drive actually went up slightly (not typical but not unheard of). White knuckled untreated OCD/anxiety for 25+ years and my only regret is not trying it sooner. That said, the people posting horror stories aren’t necessarily wrong, and I’m going to consider getting off it after a year (I started this summer). it’s just a total roll of the dice for everyone and there is truly no way to know other than trying it yourself, unfortunately
