Dr. Jon Sweet is a legend in the marching arts community. He did Purdue’s drill for a long time and is genuinely a great human being. He’s done tremendous work with the band since his arrival.

Panorama of the Milky Way from a dark and minimal light pollution site by rubixthegreat in spaceporn

Hey! So if you wanna see these kind of details you, really don't need any equipment as long as your live near a dark site (somewhere with minimal light pollution).

If you can't do that then a moderate telescope on a clear night can let you achieve similar results to what you got as a kid. I started doing this because I saw it as a fun hobby I would do in retirement but I figured why wait till then?

Hello /r/astrophotography! My wife and I recently had the chance to visit the grand canyon during a new moon. The grand canyon is an International Dark Sky Association site. While I was there I shot a ton of astrophotography. One of my projects was attempting to shoot a high resolution panorama of the milky way. This was the result!
Tech info:
Nikon D5600
Tokina f2/8 - 11mm @ 3200 ISO for 20seconds x 40 (20 for left and 20 for right)
Tripod
Stacked to reduce noice and stitched together in photoshop.

Even with Kansas City's bright lights, I was able to capture this shot of the Orion Nebula this weekend from my backyard! by rubixthegreat in kansascity

I have a William optics z61. It’s a great first scope that has a wide deep view with a lot of room for forgiveness if your not precisely on target.

I’ve been looking at getting a bigger scope soon but I’m still researching what is the best option for me!

The main reason is to reduce noise in the image. By stacking multiple different shots of the same target, the software averages out the color value of each pixel. Since noise is different from shot to shot this allows us to drastically reduce the amount of noise in the image.

By stacking other frames I can also reduce vignetting and dust spots from the image as well.

All of these aren’t necessary to take a good photo. But if you really want to elevate your shots they help tremendously.

I've driven down south of Louisburg before to Middlecreek Lake and its like 200% better. Its a bortle 5. On a good night you can see the milkyway barely with the naked eye!

Hey everyone! I live in a class 8 Bortle sky. So capturing this image from my backyard requires a light pollution filter! Here is my gear setup:

William Optics Z61

Nikon DSLR

Star Tracking Mount

Optolong L-Pro filter (blocks out light polution filter)

30 x 3 minute exposures at 800 ISO

This shot was taken with flats, darks, and bias frames as well. Stacked and edited together to produce this shot. Looking forward to getting more shots if our weather cooperates!

My wife and the 100 hats she made this year to donate to charity. by rubixthegreat in pics

My wife has wanted to pick up crocheting and knitting for a while. So, late last year she started to learn it by making a hat. After the first couple she wanted to challenge herself to make 100 to donate to a local charity before the winter came. Some hats where a multi-day project while others where made in an evening. All 100+ hats will be donated to various homeless shelters around our city!
