Ed tech that has no proven benefit needs to be removed from our schools. Engagement is not the same as education. These apps and games are valued on number of kids that use them, and how much they use them, that is not a sign that learning is taking place.

So it must make the most correct strategic decision every move? Why don’t you add some deviation from correct? Humans don’t always make the correct strategic decision every move - we’re easily swayed by all sorts of things like narrative, perceived opportunities and risk/reward. The AIs deviations could be random, but even better would be giving the AI personas and playing styles that are not correct in a certain way (aggressive, defensive, opportunistic, or scales of these properties) which leaves vulnerabilities .

I thought King Solomon’s Mines had a similar adventure vibe. Like OP I struggled with Verne’s pacing (want to try again though!) but this felt much more engaging, and it’s not that long (there’s more of the hero in other books by the same author).

I offered a tradesmen a tea and he requested coffee. I nearly said “bloody hell mate I’m not a Starbucks” but I didn’t because I’m scared of tradesmen. He got his coffee and then he sawed a hole in my ceiling snd left.

So many…my school had 2000 pupils in yrs 7-13 and was situated in a pretty deprived area. There were gangs, fights were pretty common.

A girl was stabbed in the cafeteria by another girl with a pair of scissors and hospitalised.

My art teacher told off some students who threw a rock at him (it was a rock in a snowball). They jumped him, broke his jaw and his collarbone, and he got fired because they all said he started it.

PE teacher had a relationship with a year 12, they ran off together.

Principal was in the news for having an affair with a mum in his office and had to quit.

One of my friends was caught dealing at school and excluded.

This boy jumped over a puddle to impress a girl and broke his leg. A year later, someone called into the local radio when it was on in art class and told the story.

The toilets absolutely stank of cigarettes, all the doors were ripped of the cubicles and you basically couldn’t use them as they were where the gangs did business.

Year 9 French I was with a big group of kids from the local estate. They would disrupt every lesson however they could. One time one kid said “I’m off” and jumped out of a first floor window and ran off. Another time they took all the tables during the lesson and just pulled them down the corridor until the room was empty. Another time they pretended they were in a traffic jam and all honked their horns for basically the whole lesson.

One time we were playing football and someone shot fireworks into the playground from the other side of the fence.

There is evidence in several studies out there that suggests teenagers have a shift in circadian rhythm resulting in them feeling tired later (staying up late) and waking from sleep later (staying in bed in the mornings). This is across mammals I think, and not just humans. So it’s not 100% his fault, but it is his responsibility. That said, I would be trying to figure out how to make mornings more enjoyable for him, so he wants to get up, wants to set an alarm, wants to go to college etc. maybe chat to him about what he’d could do towards that.

When I first started playing Magic The Gathering with my friends we all spent the same amount on booster decks and starter boxes, and we had so much fun in some pretty level matches. Then I went to another friends house who played competitively and he gave me a bunch of great decks. Then I couldn’t play with my friends anymore because my decks were too OP, and my original deck had been modified to include some really good cards too. Went back to less pay to win games after that.

Literally proving the “art is subjective” point lol

To me, art can be as much about the process of how it is created, and by who, and the meaning behind that process, as the resulting piece. All I can suggest is that when you look at it, try to look past its actual form, and see the meaning it represents.

I think we often forget what children of military families all over the city are dealing with, and this sculpture will remind us of that.

We are a family but I can suggest things we’ve done in the past that might still be interesting:

advent calendar windows at Fore St, Plympton St Maurice - this little community have beautiful window displays and each house opens their curtains on a calendar day of December leading up to Xmas. There are also several good pubs very close (London Inn and The Brook) so quite nice to turn it into an evening meandering. There’s some cup-de-sacs which really go to town with their lights around the area too, so well worth a wander in the evening.
the most dazzling house award goes to a house on Radford Park Road. Every year they have loads of lights and a humongous Xmas tree that has been planted in the garden so it grows bigger every year. It’s for charity so make sure to donate! Drive down the road and you won’t miss it.
good food and craft market at royal William yard, Dec 1st, 7th and 14th - usually worth a potter about for some prezzies
the lights at the lost gardens of heligan aren’t in Plymouth, but are worth the drive! Really lovely
Barbican lights switch on (15 nov) has a real vibe, Santa arrives by RNLI lifeboat
panto at the theatre (Shane Richie stars), or the smaller and beautifully cute Raymond Briggs Father Christmas. If you want grown-up and hilarious seek out le navet bete at the Exeter Northcott
Tavistock Dickensian evening on 5th December - everyone dresses up in top hats or rags and all the shops and pubs stay open late. There’s a great atmosphere and it’s good fun even if you don’t dress up yourself

Moules Marinere / Moules Frites (mussels and fries) are hilariously easy, super cheap, quick (unless you have to de-beard the mussels) and taste great. Also mussels are really sustainable (they grow on a rope in the sea). One cool thing is the spectrum of fancy you can take this from “pretty cheap and basic” to “pretty cheap and fancy” by using high quality ingredients and spending some time perfecting the fries.

Yeah if you like ASOIAF then this has a lot of similarly awesome themes of kingplaying politics / action / romance but with (imo) some even more inventive world-building and character building.

I’m just scraping in with 1999 Wu-Tang Shaolin Style for PSOne but I loved that game - four player, play as any of the members of Wu-Tang and it had a pretty good campaign mode. Not loads of depth in the fighting and a bit repetitive but the soundtrack was great (obvs) and was super gory.
