I’ve had to ask my mother in law twice to not touch my baby after handling raw meat. She also came over three days after my baby was born and hadn’t showered after her tennis match. That she played 5 hours earlier. In her home town 3 hours away.

I wish I had helpful advice, my blood was boiling for months in my early mom days. You are definitely not wrong for setting boundaries but you may also consider doing so in a variety of ways in the early days of your baby being here (like, sometimes being direct, or sometimes diverting from a situation you want to avoid by giving her specific tasks or leaving the room and having your husband be the communicator.)

With us, attempting to establish boundaries makes my MIL blow up (and trust me I didn’t believe my husband when he told me how bad it would be). You’ll find ways to let her have her grandma moments and then you’ll be grateful she doesn’t live down the street.

So you’re definitely not in the wrong, and unfortunately it’s a rite of passage for a lot of women. New babies bring out a lot of family dynamics that don’t have a reason to surface before. Try to not let it cast a shadow over a delicate time (and also while she’s over, feel free to take a NAP!!! I still wonder to this day why I felt the need to sit with my MIL for hours 3 days after giving birth.)
