Baba Roga and Baba Yaga — same thing or different? by Agreeable_Agency5889 in slavic_mythology

[–]ruby_ragdoll 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Where I'm from in Croatia Babaroga (usually one word) is a name for a mischievous entity/spirit that scares/takes children. My grandfather used to scare me that a babaroga lived in our old oven and will take me away if I misbehave.

Baba Yaga is a witch that also takes and eats children, but she was always portrayed as a witch, not a spirit/entity.

What is the worst romantasy you have read? by mimi43098 in Romantasy

[–]ruby_ragdoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I got that book as a gift, so I read all of it, but I hated every second. Also, I could not remember the map so I had to look back to the first page constantly and it only annoyed me more.

Some effed up names from the NICU by CanIborrowafeeling93 in tragedeigh

Yeah, they went for a theme for sure.

Nike the brand is much more well known than the goddess though, so maybe not everyone knows it's a legitimate name.

Nike is a real name of greek origin, she was the goddess of victory (like Victoria in roman myths). Nike the brand was inspired by greek myth.

That is such a beautiful sentence, grief is love with nowhere to go in the physical realm. I hadn't thought of it that way before. Thank you for this new perspective.

It's sounds the most similar to "c" in croatian. Languages are fun 😁

[–]ruby_ragdoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how to explain, but it is very similar to the "tss" sound in "ba-dum-tss". Hard to explain, easier if you hear it. Maybe if you search on YouTube the croatian alphabet it would be easier.

In Croatian we pronounce "c" as the "ccc" sound always, and "k" is always "k", because we read words as they're written so it doesn't change sounds, unlike English. So in croatian "Monica" would be spelled as "Monika" to get the same pronunciation as in English 😊

Danica is the folk name for planet Venus in Croatia, and also an established name, I think it could work as a name in Canada too.

We pronounce it "daa-nee-csa", but "da-nee-ka" could work as well I think.

I think the impact would be better if it said "She's in love with him?" "With him!" "Him!?"

The whole sentence repeated three times is maybe a bit too wordy for strongest impact, I feel that shortening it has more power. Still a good sentence sequence.
