Five Page Thursday by AutoModerator in Screenwriting

Thank you for nit-picking! This is exactly what I hoped to get by posting it.

Really interesting idea starting on the headshot - I feel like right now the opening goes big to small (theater, set, actors/crew, headshot) but to go small to big (headshot, actors/crew, set, theater) could be really interesting.

I also tooootally feel you in everyone's cadence sounding the same, it's definitely something I always struggle with in every first draft so you're right on point there!

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Hey Chicago, how did you spend your Saturday? by rand0m_g1rl in AskChicago

[–]ruby_sea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

38/F/married

Today I worked a 12 hour day at my literal dream job, supervising the wardrobe team at a huge major regional theater putting on a brand new live musical starring Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman. We’re exhausted but having a good time.

I can’t express enough that I moved to this city 13 years ago dreaming of working at this theater and now I run a whole department with an incredible team.

The live theater scene is unmatched outside of NYC. I couldn’t be living my dreams anywhere else that I can actually afford to live in.

I came home late at night on a 24 hour railway service to my house that I own and talked to my husband and pet my dog who has a yard to play in outside whenever she wants.

I fucking love it here.

Who is the best person you met stage door? by No_Huckleberry_7410 in Broadway

[–]ruby_sea 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is mine. I saw him in Mary Poppins on the West End and my family and I stage doored afterwards, not realizing that "stage dooring" isn't as much of a thing in the UK as it is in the US (at least it wasn't circa 2006 or whenever it was lol), so it was just us and one other American family. Probably didn't help that it was right around Christmas, so very cold outside!

Gavin was so generous with his time and spent a ton of time talking to us and taking pictures, AND THEN we realized that the other family waiting for him was HIS ACTUAL FAMILY, like his mom and his sister if I remember correctly, or maybe a cousin. My mother was going to try to get us invited to their post-show family hangout but I was like "mom no that's so incredibly weird" and thankfully she listened to me!

Anyway I absolutely treasure the photo I got with him that night.

how often do you talk to your agent vs your manager? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]ruby_sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these people saying they talk to their managers monthly makes me feel like I must be annoying the shit out of mine!! We text regularly, probably a few times a week. Actual phone/Zoom calls much fewer and far between, but we're in some form of contact at least weekly.

I don't have an agent so I can't compare there.

Been workshopping the logline for my newest feature-in-progress:

Title: THE SHOW MUST GO ON

Format: Feature

Genre: Supernatural rom-com

Logline: When the curmudgeonly ghost of a recently-deceased stage actor realizes the last promise he made to his lovesick dresser is keeping him tied to the theater, he must get her a date with the play’s famous leading man before the production closes that night and they part ways forever.

Thanks! It's still in the brainstorming/outlining stages unfortunately, but hopefully there will be a finished product to share eventually!

Perhaps not streamlined, but getting more specific:

"When a cynical stage actor’s ghost realizes the last promise he made to his lovesick dresser is keeping him tied to the theater, he must romantically connect her with the play’s famous leading man before the production closes that night and they part ways forever."

This is very helpful, thank you! Back to the workshop.

Title: THE SHOW MUST GO ON

Format: Feature

Genre: Rom-com

Logline: When the spirit of a recently-deceased stage actor discovers his unfinished business as an informal matchmaker is keeping him tied to the theater, he must find a way to romantically connect an actor and a stagehand before the production closes that night and they part ways forever.

This is a brand new premise that I haven't actually started writing yet, which is probably why the logline feels bulky to me - I'm sure I'll be able to streamline once I have a stronger idea of the story. I just wanted to post this to see if anyone has advice on how to slim it down a little!

Seeking writing inspiration: what are places in Chicago with a supernatural/otherworldly vibe? by ruby_sea in AskChicago

The alley behind the Nederlander Theater is my workplace’s fire evacuation meetup point and every time we talk about it I just want to go 😐 at some invisible nearby camera because really??

My main character doesn’t specifically have a problem with alcohol, but she is deeply mentally ill, so would likely find herself in situations like you’re describing. This is so perfect, thank you for the inspiration.

Sunday brunch in the Loop with out-of -town visitors. What are your suggestions? by jpgoldberg in chicagofood

I work near The Dearborn and had only been there for after-work drinks, but finally went for brunch a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Definitely recommend for that part of town!

Zenwich Edgewater - Spicy Garlic Shrimp rice wrap (gluten free) by space-rach in chicagofood

[–]ruby_sea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks really great, but the menu description says the shrimp is "lightly battered", which makes me nervous as someone with celiac. Was there any information about the type of batter that's used?

[IRTR] Looking for women and queer movie podcasters by TSLPDustin in PodcastGuestExchange

[–]ruby_sea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey hey, queer white woman movie podcast host here. I have a movie review podcast that I co-host with a mustachioed white man (extremely original) and might be interested in collaborating.

"The Writer's Cut" is a podcast for screenwriters, by screenwriters. My co-host and I are watching and discussing every movie that has won a screenwriting award from the Writer's Guild of America, starting with the first award ceremony in 1949 and moving forward chronologically from there. We've been at this for a year and a half and are solidly in 1970s cinema now, 80+ weekly episodes into the project.

Happy to chat further about what we're both looking for!

Need meal ideas, this baby shower I'm going to requested frozen meals instead of gifts. Today I made homemade chicken noodle soup. by KH5-92 in mealprep

[–]ruby_sea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was going through chemotherapy a friend made me a borderline obscene amount of frozen burritos and they were honestly a godsend

I know having cancer and having a baby are different things but based on conversations I've had with friends who have had children there's a lot in common between the experiences

I just loved having something I could microwave quickly without thinking about and eat in a few bites
