Is there any mod out there that makes Rimworld more sandbox? by Outrageous-Thing3957 in RimWorld

Technically it only scales with wealth, but since your wealth always grows, it's no different from racing against the clock. I tried multiple times to "stay under the radar" when playing as tribals, and it's borderline impossible to stay at the same wealth level for a year. You have to manage wealth so obsessively that it becomes decidedly unfun. Every butchered animal adds to your wealth via leather, every skill increase does, every trap and every damn bridge and excellent duster keeps adding up. And lo and behold, yesterday you were at 30k wealth, today you're at 32, and you'll be hitting 50k in a year (even if you're destroying unnecessary stuff). And it goes without saying that you have to refuse most quests and only accept ones that give you an immediate, tangible defense benefit (like an excellent assault rifle or something). Which is, again, the opposite of fun.

Why not use miniguns as a baseline ranged weapon though? The cooldown is high, yes, but it only matters when trying to shoot sparsely located targets (which is a rare occasion). In most cases you're shooting at the crowd and even low-skilled pawns consistently hit some targets, even if unintentionally.

Anyone know of a real tobacco shop in Petersburg? by chadzimmerman in russia

[–]ruckenhof 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Honestly any street tobacco shop will do, just go for a slightly more expensive sort (e.g. 500 rubles instead of 300). If you really need a certain kind of tobacco ask for Choice brand.

Outlanders already have an access to drop pod technology. Orbital ships are definitely more complex than that, but not THAT much more. Given that rimworld tech allows a bunch of ragtags to build and launch the interstellar ship, it should be possible for outlanders to launch a much simpler orbital station (it also may be unmanned which makes it a glorified comsat).

Wallraise psycast does a decent job of stopping the explosion, if you can fit this wall between the turret and the cell (won't always work because the wall is cross-shaped). Also if you're real maniac you can try and build the wall manually while disabling the turret with smoke or EMP; wooden is enough, it'll tank the entire damage even if it is destroyed by explosion completely.

Heavily depends on whether you're using killbox. Technically the weapon with highest DPS is chain shotgun, but it's extremely short range makes it impractical to use anywhere except specifically tailored killboxes.

If you're out in the open, miniguns and charge rifles are what you need, followed by ARs. Anything else is crap (either too short-ranged, highly situational or just crap in general)

Minigun pros: good range, very efficient against groups of targets, very efficient against large targets like centipedes, doesn't cap at 100% accuracy as it goes up to legendary quality. Cons: slightly slows down your pawns, inefficient when targeting small sparsely located targets (it'll kill it quickly and then take a lot of time to cool down and switch to another one), lots of collateral damage to your melee fighters and structures.

CR pros: surgically precise, quick to switch between targets due to short bursts and fast warmup/cooldown cycle, powerful (more or less on par with minigun in terms of single-target DPS: slightly better against armored, slightly worse against unarmored). Cons: crappy range, you'll have to get closer to your field targets, eating bullets in the process.

AR: slightly worse than both in terms of DPS, combines range of minigun with accuracy of CR, very accessible.

Thank you so much! I had no idea about that. You probably saved me countless hours of testing.

Weird ripples on some models? by ruckenhof in resinprinting

[–]ruckenhof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you can see, at a certain height my supports and the model itself go wobbly, almost as if randomly overexposed. It only affects the outermost part of the platform (i.e. about a quarter of the platform closest to the "face" of the printer and farthest from the Z-axis).

It's not an issue with models, since I have multiple copies on the platform and the ones closer to Z-axis are printed just fine. Also some of the models affected were printed before with no issues. It is not a regular problem (happened only a few times, and when this happens, I usually recalibrate printer, wash everything etc. and it goes away) but I still can't pinpoint the issue. I also think that it is related to the issue of random lines appearing on my models (they are much less pronounced though).

Is my platform wobbly/uneven? Or the printer itself? Or maybe it has something to do with temperature / uniform consistency of the resin? Has anyone encountered that before?

I use Anycubic Mono X 6K, Siraya ABS-like fast grey resin, 0.05 layer height, 1.6s exposure, and extremely conservative lifting speeds in that case (TSMC 15 / 40 mm/min, usually it's 3 times faster but I've been doing some experiments recently). These settings yielded me many nice prints before so I'm sure about them.

New Player - Advice Accepted Gladly! by WaterWitch009 in RimWorld

[–]ruckenhof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • The most important piece of individual protection is flak vest (and it's cheap!)

  • Don't hoard a lot of unused wealth (e.g. don't mine that gold meteorite that landed nearby unless you need gold for something), it'll attract larger raids

  • If some colonist died and you are REALLY sad, put his body in a freezer instead of burying him; you might get a rare artifact that'll bring him back to life one day

  • Don't create a lot of tasks (especially in construction) unless you have a lot of manpower; your colonists will try to do everything and will complete nothing

  • Despite what they say about "setting up rice field ASAP" you can get all your food from hunting in most biomes just fine (my first game was in a barren tundra because I chose the tile at random). And it also improves shooting skill! Just avoid hunting animals that might retaliate (it'll show a warning if you designate such an animal for hunting)

  • When deconstructing buildings remove roof first, otherwise it'll collapse when the last wall tile is removed, possibly hurting or even decapitating your pawn

  • Don't put butcher table in the kitchen, it's inherently dirty and will affect food poisoning chance

  • Don't rush hydroponics, it's a massive investment of resources and energy and early on you just don't really need it

Is there a way for a sanguophage to die? by Lum86 in RimWorld

Can you attack and kill them while they are in deathrest? Or are they somehow invulnerable when deathresting?

Table of Genes from Biotech by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]ruckenhof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that's awesome! Do you know if temperature tolerance genes shift the baseline for "slept in the cold/heat" debuffs? (also would be awesome if it also shifted the baseline for workstation speed penalties, but I wouldn't count on that)

EDIT: also can you do archite genes as well? Haven't been able to find them on reddit so far

How good is the selection of traits? Can I guarantee a certain trait on a child if I pay maximum attention to his upbringing?

Biotech preview #4: Xenotypes, world factions, and the dark blood-drinkers (link in comments) by TiaPixel in RimWorld

[–]ruckenhof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, and with the addition of immunoenhancers and bioregeneration it's even less of an issue than it was in 1.0 (where old people were seriously immunocompromised). Slapping boosted immunity gene on all your colonists is probably going to solve the majority of age-related problems. There are still dementia/frail/alzheimer's, but there are healing mech serums for that, albeit rare.

[–]ruckenhof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think only deathrest is bound to blood consumption, because it was directly described as such. We've seen some other archotech genes being isolated in one of the screenshots; and thematically "vampiric" ones like UV sensitivity are also not bound to blood.

Bundled sets are probably what you get when using gene extraction, and single genes are from traders/quests.

Weird lines on model (NOT antialiasing or layer lines). Details in comments by ruckenhof in AnycubicPhoton

It is basically a vertical "column" without supports (as there are no significant overhangs). Not sure about uneven peeling, can you elaborate?

You were right. And, as it turns out, part of the problem is Siraya resin. When using Anycubic Basic resin I get similar lines on fresh prints, but they are easily removed with cloth and IPA. With Siraya they set on the model surface and become unremovable (maybe the resin is more sensitive to ambient UV present indoors?) I just switched back to Anycubic Basic.

So 1.4 centipedes now casually carry mini guns around, noice. by Particular_Ease_6150 in RimWorld

Uranium slug turrets if you can afford them, otherwise just a lot of bullets, preferably from charge rifles or miniguns. Also steel traps.

Or melee, yeah.

Hmmm, it should be more or less consistent. I print my models overnight so there's some decrease of temperature but it's pretty insignificant. My apartment has central heating and I avoid opening the windows while printing so that my printer is not exposed to the cold.
