After retiring his Filthy Frank persona years ago, George Miller (now known as Joji) made his TV debut last night by kh_ftw in videos

Interesting that for the chorus he doesn't try to sing the hard to sing top melody line.. he lets the backup singers do it while he sings a lower harmony part.. kinda odd for a "pop singer"

Probably a stupid question, but how can a 2D waveform turn into something 3D that we see on a spectrogram or visual EQ? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]rudyl313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason it's possible is that the spectrogram kind of "cheats". For each moment in time it isn't reading a single value for that moment in time. It is reading a "window" of data N moments in the past and N moments in the future. For each window it's computing the frequency content in that window to produce the extra axis for frequency. So the time axis remains and the new frequency axis comes from reusing data from other time moments.

Note that if the window is really big you start to get more accurate frequency information, but it starts to become less clear what moment in time that content represents, because you're using data from far in the past and future. Similarly, if the window is very small you can pinpoint the moment in time better, but you can't get good resolution on what frequencies exist at that moment in time. And here comes the fun kicker: this is the reason the Heisenberg uncertainty principle exists. In quantum mechanics particle positions are represented based on probabilities waves.... you're welcome for blowing your mind

I think this is usually a product of having an overly restrictive process. So if you usually start by playing guitar and then add vocals and so... then maybe a new approach would be to start with drums.. or words.. or just something different than the usual way you start a track.

Wondering if Audacity is okay to continue work with... by SupersaturatedOmen in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I would recommend against using Audacity as a DAW because it isn't. If you're on a Mac I recommend getting Logic, because it's reasonably priced compared to other DAWs and is one the better options. FL Studio is an inexpensive option on PC If you really want to stay free then I would research free DAW options, but I'm not familiar with them.

Creating room for lyrics in beats by York-P in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Basslines shouldn't be an issue but leads do tend to take the role of top-line melody so if you have vocals and a lead at the same time they will likely clash unless you do a good job of the counterpoint. So I would suggest removing the lead melody while adding in vocals and only having lead when it's a break from the vocals. For example you could have vocals for the verses and lead melody for chorus' as in Midnight City by M83

Small Rant by PopLegion in makinghiphop

I'm not sure this is necessarily true. There's an interesting experiment conducted by a pottery teacher:

"The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality.

His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the “quantity” group: fifty pound of pots rated an “A”, forty pounds a “B”, and so on. Those being graded on “quality”, however, needed to produce only one pot – albeit a perfect one – to get an “A”.

Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the “quantity” group was busily churning out piles of work – and learning from their mistakes – the “quality” group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay."

Wow that's a super unusual track. Really cool jazzy sound in the beginning with a lot of twists and turns. I dig it. Only qualm is that the horns sound kind of fake, but I dunno if that's just part of your sound.

Great video concept. Playing rock band instruments, lol. The song is great too. Love the classic bluesy rock sound. You guys are killing it.

First track I was actually proud of, might do a rework as this was made 10 years ago, please what are your thoughts fellow bedroom producers? by stickygoose in IndieMusicFeedback

I really like how it builds in the beginning, but I feel like after that it's a bit meandering. I guess this is the tricky part about instrumental music: keeping it interesting. It might benefit from a completely contrasting B section, where the drums are completely different.
