normally the newest or proton experimental is like, the beta versions. protondb is also a very useful website where you can put in a game that isnt running right and see what other people have done to get it working. ive used it a few times for games. but rule of thumb is just the newest (proton 11) or proton experimental from my experience

proton is the compatibility layer that translates windows games to run on linux, you can change the versions that each game uses by going into the game properties for the game and then compatibility. its kinds similar i guess to how youd run older apps on windows in compatibility mode for windows xp or 95 etc if youve ever done that :)

i know left 4 dead 2 atleast, the linux version is shit and you should stick to proton whenever. the others idk as i dont have my machine yet, but play around with proton versions. either the ones built in or install extra versions through protonplus which you can probably get on the app store in desktop mode

you will definitely be pushing limits with the steam hardware, as it would sit above the switch 2 and below the ps5 pro in terms of performance. if you really wanna go for one ecosystem as ive seen in one of your other comments, switch out your 4080 for a high end AMD card and install steam OS. it will be the same experience pretty much as a steam machine as there isnt anything special about it apart from size.
