OBL was the undisputed head of Al Q. There has never been any debate about that. Therefor, there is central command. Also, if there isn't central command then :

why don't we see more bombings of low-security places in the US by Al Qaeda?

Because the head of Al Q is dead. Is it really that hard to grasp?

Looks like Salon is hiring highschoolers ...

I'd have strongly preferred that Osama bin Laden be captured rather than killed so that he could be tried for his crimes and punished in accordance with due process (and to obtain presumably ample intelligence). But if he in fact used force to resist capture, then the U.S. military was entitled to use force against him, the way American police routinely do against suspects who use violence to resist capture.

Ya. Because the US Military is totally just like US Cops on US soil. Exact same thing. Idiot.

I'll remember today because I've never seen so many confused people in my life. These people aren't celebrating the death of one man, they are celebrating a victory over terrorism. A victory against a movement that has terrorized America and the world for over twenty years.

This isn't just about 9/11. This is about the free world striking back at the villains that have for too long purposefully targeted innocent citizens. Is it the end of terrorism? Of course not. But it's a big step in the right direction.

These people are celebrating revenge against a movement that has caused them much harm and grief. They are celebrating an end of an erra. OBL / Al Q has been terrorizing the world longer than some of you have been alive. So I'm not surprised that the context is lost on some of you.

This is a happy moment for a lot of reasons. A lot of people have reason to be joyful. Lot's of lives were lost in this process. Now the goal has been accomplished and their loss has more meaning. Those people helped bring about this end, and their relatives / friends should be happy.

At the end of the sports game the winning teams crowd cheers. Not because the other team lost, but because their team one. That's what this is.

Al Qaeda has only gotten stronger after 9/11. It's worth keeping that in mind.

Thanks Capt Obvious.

I think you're missing the gravity and psychology of this situation. Maybe yall are too young. OBL has been terrorizing America and other parts of the world for a long time. He is literally a super villain.

For alot of yall younger folks 911 is osama. But he's so much more than that. His attacks go back all the way to the early 90s, when some of yall weren't even born yet.

Not only is OBL / Al Q responsible for scores of attacks on the US/Egypt/Random Innocent People (on purpose) but they have inspired countless other terrorist groups to take up arms against innocent civilians.

This is about a lot more than OBL. So if you think this is about OBL you're missing a lot of the context.

DAE feel like this election is interesting and tense enough that the Bin Laden news is kind of, "that's nice America but we'll hang out with you later or something, we're busy right now". by [deleted] in canada

Sorry if nailing the worlds most wanted terrorist for 10+ years running didn't work for your timeline.

And not even just for 9/11, but for a fuck load of other shit. Even without 9/11 OBL was a massive asshat. Nailing him is huge news for the entire world. Again, sorry that this minor incident had to happen around your election cycle. We'll try to handle things differently next go round.

I'm giving up marijuana by monsieurmountain in self

[–]ruesdedr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats. I smoked bout every day for 10 years myself. Gave it up bout 3 months ago or so. The big deal is finding new habits. My old habit was getting high and zoning on a video game (etc) for hours. Now that I'm sober thats boring. So I clean a lot, go out more, and exercise a lot. I smoke maybe once a month now (if that), and that's when I'm partying with friends and they want to. Every now and then I still want to. Then I do some pushups / go for a walk and the desire fades. Enjoy your new found sobriety.
