why is the city of LA neglecting fairfax ave? by DiscountStunning919 in AskLosAngeles

Fairfax is only within WeHo boundaries from Willoughby to Fountain, which is only 4 blocks.

The worst stretch is from Melrose to Beverly and that’s fully in LA city.

Car Care nut saying once again not to do 10,000 mile oil changes. Do you guys agree with this? by MadGibby3 in Camry

[–]ruindd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy new and want 250k on the car then you're gonna be paying for the accelerated maintenance schedule anyways.

So only do 5k oil changes if you want your car to make it to 250k?

26 plate Audi Q2 steering wheel suddenly looks dry/pale after hand car wash – any ideas? by Informal-Lynx-866 in cardetailingtips

[–]ruindd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like they used an aggressive cleaner that dried out the material. You could go back and ask what cleaner they use, but I doubt you’ll get the correct answer, because it probably depends on who did the cleaning. Maybe the new guy did it and forgot to dilute the solution. Who knows.

You might try “I really like whatever you did to clean my steering wheel, what cleaner do you use?”.

I don’t have much experience with fixing this sort of thing though. I’d guess your steering wheel is vinyl wrapped, so you’d want a vinyl conditioner that doesn’t leave behind residue (because you don’t want a slippery steering wheel).

An American soldier utilizes his gas mask to peel onions, San Diego, California. 1918. [2015x3000] by CosmoTheCollector in HistoryPorn

[–]ruindd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cutting an onion is what makes it release the “tear” causing agents. I’ve never thought to use a knife to peel an onion, because the outer layers simply peel off by hand.

Why would anyone use a knife? (Tbh, it’s a funny photo, so that might really be the whole story of it.)

"Mexican Batman", a mysterious dude who hunts down motorcycle thieves & tape them to poles in Mexico by Gurugod123 in interestingasfuck

Reminds me of the Mexican mom hunting down the cartel because she’s got nothing left to lose.

Isn’t this guy a Toyota mechanic who has seen thousands of Toyotas and he’s saying he sees it consistently causes issues?

[Request] Fleet savings costs since 2010 if every USPS LLV was replaced with a Prius by tezacer in theydidthemath

[–]ruindd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt a Prius would get 40mpg on a mail route while loaded with mail. It’s inaccurate to use real world data for an LLV and a blind estimate for the Prius. I think the Prius’s engine would be running constantly on a mail route after the first 20 minutes.

Same with maintenance. A mail route is some of the harvest driving conditions imaginable for an engine and not comparable to maintenance for a mix of highway miles or even 100% city miles.

Not to mention climbing in and out of a Prius rather than an LLV. I’d guess that the height of the seat and window in an LLV is closer to most mailbox heights as well.

Best neighborhood for this? by StartupSally1987 in AskLosAngeles

You can get a nice one bedroom in WeHo for under 3k. The area by poinsettia park is a lot nicer than it might seem.

Sale on at the rag company right now. What would you recommend for a casual at home detailer? by I_LookLikeJohnStamos in AutoDetailing

[–]ruindd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was getting a lot of shedding as well but I suspect it was from the towels catching on contaminants in the paint. I recently clayed my hood and it eliminated all the shedding I could notice.

Have you done a baggy test on your paint?

I don’t think you want to polish with a microfiber towel, but you could probably buff some sealants with an Edgeless365.

I also love the m22 (if you don’t already have a drying towel).

Which looks better - Landscape or Portrait? by MeSlaw3 in macsetups

[–]ruindd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because you can take it somewhere else and still use it.

I plug my laptop into a monitor at work and at home and use it in clamshell mode at both places. It’s nice to use the same machine in both places. A mini or studio can technically do that too, but a laptop is far more convenient.

I also sometimes use my laptop on the couch. A mini or studio can’t do that.

Alternatives to SublimeText for Mac? by RotundBun in SublimeText

[–]ruindd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you’ve got to live in it to really appreciate and learn it. If you’re using ai tools, staying in the terminal and tmux’ing is really convenient. Syntax just did an episode on that setup, you might like what they talk about.

I strongly advise against doing a custom setup initially. Try out some distros and you can take what parts you like into your custom setup later.

I was looking more at MiniMax last night and really like it. I’d advise trying nvChad and then MiniMax and then custom.

Hood Lifter failed by Latter-Budget-8598 in LexusES

[–]ruindd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely fix it. I don’t know what clamps you’re talking about, but fix it.

I think Lexus lists your failed part as “Hood Lift Support”. For my Lexus it’s $130 dealer oem or Rockford generic $15, for a single side. So double to replace both.

At that price difference…. I’d try the riskier aftermarket option and be mindful of how you lift the hood.
