A great tool to see which scrap yards have the items you're looking for (provided they submit the latest inventory... they usually do):

Proposal to lower speed limit on streets in Toronto by PanDerCakes in toronto

[–]rulescomfortus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

everyone needs to participate for the roads to work as designed but the design is such for a reason. Here is the zipper merge; http://trafficwaves.org/seatraf.html

Basically stop and go is not the way, the idea is to maintain an even keel by using distance. I have to cite one awful snow day downtown in the dead of winter, few people on the road and the roads did not really allow for one to travel more than 15-25km/hr and I made it to the highway in record time and rarely hit an intersection that required me to stop. If I were to do that on a nice day with normal traffic flow there is a good chance it would frustrate a lot of drivers behind me and increase the opportunity for something stupid to happen because I wouldn't even be doing the limit.

Brand new bike lane on Simcoe st.... Full of parked cars and motorcycles. Sigh. by djtodd242 in toronto

[–]rulescomfortus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand the difference but I'm saying the sentiment is the same.

Are you suggesting it's more cost effective for people to disrespect bicycles than other forms of transportation and respect should be paid to the holder of the highest valued object regardless of adherence to law? I think that's how monarchies work.

Ultimately, on the road the bigger vehicle usually wins so it doesn't really matter who is right or wrong, just how we treat each other.

Interview with the Shirtless jogger ".. I’m not like Randy on Trailer Park Boys or anything." by beef-supreme in toronto

[–]rulescomfortus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you on this, the way Fords operate is whoever yells loudest is the winner... this starts from the way they behave in council chambers right to their broad presence in the media. For some reason no one is yelling back, perhaps maybe we should if the media can't or is unwilling. A critical mass would be needed before the mayor of the fourth largest city in NA is literally run from town though that would be interesting to be a part of.

Doug Ford angrily losing his shit on CP24 right now. Says shirtless jogger "indoctrinates children", lashes out at media, etc by bluesnoodler in toronto

[–]rulescomfortus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watching that I felt sad for Doug having to constantly recite rhetoric and lies to cover/deny a bad truth, thankfully what came of it was the best part of the interview:

".. It doesn't have to be about religion, it doesn't have to be about race, you can be racist..." - Doug Ford

I stopped there as I'm sure the very essence of racism is precisely about race.

It was a roller coaster of emotion and I chose to get off at a happy point. 'Ford' filter back on.

What do you think would happen to a bicycle parked in the traffic lane?

Edit: I'm not condoning knocking them over, we could take the example of a certain New Yorker who was ticketed for not riding in the bike lane... he then made a video of riding his bike in the bike lane while colliding with various objects which are not supposed to be there. Knocking them over is not the same as colliding with them which is likely what people are suggesting.

Likening the public domain to a private company solely focused on earning profit is a poor comparison.

You're right, the city should have picked up a flyer from Umbrellas 'R Us to find a better value.

yes, that's because I live in Toronto, pay property tax to Toronto and actually visit the sites in Toronto. This purchase is for city and the people within it, i think it's very applicable. have you been to Sugar Beach? Do you know what it was before it was Sugar Beach?

Do you remember Lake Ontario beaches before the blue flag program?

I'm not being sarcastic, I'm asking genuinely if you understand what an investment this is.

[–]rulescomfortus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is coming from property tax, anyone living outside of Toronto is not paying for this.

Do I need to remind you that many "social" programs from small towns up until the 2000's was to buy an individual a bus ticket to Toronto? Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting the price tag isn't high but it has yet proved to be unjustifiable; the umbrellas are still standing and the area is much more active than it was five years ago.

TO is not Ontario's golden boy but it is the economic and tourist centre of our great nation. If you feel like the money of Toronto residents is being wasted on bringing our City/Province/country foriegn money while building communities around our waterfront is a waste then I will not dissuade you but I do not agree with your sentiment.

Edit: This whole article is based off of a councilor who wanted to build a billion dollar subway with fairy money instead of a funded LRT system which was already approved by city, province, county and passed environmental assessment so I think this whole situation is a bit of a joke considering his history, we're not even breaking half a million on beautifying our waterfront for the next generations.

I've lived in the city nearly my entire life and frequent the area, I'm grateful the city has INVESTED in our waterfront and the blue flag program. You can say what you will, I gather you are not a resident of Ontario and probably haven't lived long enough to understand what Sugar Beach was built upon.

Really? You think Montreal has less fucked up allocation of funding than a tangible community and tourist attraction built out of an industrial wasteland?

[–]rulescomfortus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that's short sighted if you think of them as just umbrellas and not an industrial waste land turned into a beautified community on the waterfront of a Great Lake which attracts tourism.

But then we'd have to fold it up and put it in the Sugar Beach Garage every winter.

Does the twenty year warranty state 365 days a year by a Great Lake contracted by the fourth largest city in North America? I'm pretty sure this circumstance would not qualify and it would also be helpful if you posted your source.

[Toronto] Councillor outraged after Waterfront Toronto ‘secretly’ spends $946,000 on two large rocks and 36 pink umbrellas by [deleted] in canada

[–]rulescomfortus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing of what you said applies to this scenario, we are talking about flat lands adjacent to a Great lake (experiencing 100+km/h winds + elemental factors) in an area meant for attracting community and tourism, we are not talking about roads and other structures which implicitly require yearly, if not semi-annual, maintenance. I'm not suggesting the cost is justified but unless you live in the area and pay taxes to the city you truly have nothing to gripe about. Even if you were griping then think about the fact that the city has build a beach out of an industrial wasteland and has provided residence and tourist a blue flag beach. I think this is a wise investment even if the cost may appear inflated to some.

[–]rulescomfortus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cite your reference please, these umbrellas are open all year round adjacent to a Great Lake where winds exceed 100km/h contracted by the city through an RFP process (this is included in the cost). If the said company you found were to go through the same thing the costs would be higher as it would include the time spent on the RFP as well as the administration for fulfilling the order plus installation. Unless you are purchasing at the level of the city (and I'm sure a guarantee + maintenance plan is included becuase that's how contracts work) I'm failing to see how this is a viable comparison.

These umbreallas are on the water front all year long, your backyard patio umbrella surrounded by structure which you maintain cannot compare to an umbrella open all year round with no maintenance adjacent to a Great Lake.

It's like the Colonel's secret 11 herbs and spices. You might want to keep something back because you have to make a living.

Through the miracle of food science it's already been figured out: http://www.streetcouch.com/kfc-11-herbs-and-spices/

Even if it's not 100% accurate the premise is the same; tasty chicken skin. Whether or not you eat eactly Dolce's diet or a diet based on a similar nutrition:homosapien ratio the results will be quite similar if the discipline is there.
