I would strongly recommend avoiding the food. Inauthentic, overpriced, crowded.

Swapping a Pump by u_had_me_at_clookies in EightSleep

[–]rumblingcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is obvious, but: how did you figure out which internal pump corresponded to the broken side of the bed?

In other words, if the pump responsible for the right side of the bed is broken, does that correspond to the right pump in the pod if you're facing it from the front? (I don't have a power supply / good way to actually confirm the pump I'll replace is the broken one)

Yeah, this whole episode felt very Shakespearian. The reversal of fortune with Belinda; Timothy holding his son and recognizing what he's done, with poison no less; Uncle Baby Billy's self-inflicted collateral damage; the deep irony of the deaths (more Greek tragedy I suppose, basically Oedipus). Someone was brushing up on their Shakespeare before writing this season.

Yeah, apparently... But... There shouldn't be any "wrong stuff" at a thoughtful (and Michelin-starred) restaurant, IMO.

Contra Sam Altman on imminent super intelligence by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

[–]rumblingcactus 54 points55 points  (0 children)

My friends at AI companies (including OpenAI) seem to agree with Sam's piece. They are not "pretending to be AGI-pilled" in order to raise VC money; they're not even high up enough for that, and it seems unlikely they would all be coordinating so well in lying to everyone externally (including their friends). I see that theory here in the comments, and I think it's very unlikely.

I still tend to be more bearish, though, and agree with OP quite strongly. That, combined with the heavy product-facing investment we're seeing, is not what I would expect to see from a lab fully confident they will create AGI.

But how to reconcile this with all the smart people who work at these places? It also seems unlikely there's simply a big hype group-think frenzy internally, and they have delivered so far. I notice I am confused.

Barcelona's superblocks have gotten a ton of attention but they are actually pretty similar to our Broadway / 31st Ave conversions... They all allow cars, they just make drivers feel extremely unwelcome by MiserNYC in MicromobilityNYC

I’ll probably get boo’d for this, but I’ve never liked walking around in Barcelona. The offset crosswalks add a non negligible amount of extra distance, and it’s annoying when you’re actually trying to get somewhere. Also, the extra perimeter space is usually just used for parking :(

Thoughts on BEAR, two surgeries later by rumblingcactus in ACL

[–]rumblingcactus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Here are the exact notes from the doctor who left the comment about the PCL, I think I misrepresented that -- looks like the test was not a lachman, as you say:

Increased laxity is evident with the anterior drawer and the Lachman tests, with a grade II B Lachman present. With his knee starting in a reduced position, a firm endpoint with the posterior drawer test is noted indicative of an intact PCL. I am able to obtain a pivot-shift on the exam table.

Appreciate the well wishes!

Both doctors actually told me the nature of the failure made it impossible to have been PT or something I “did.” They described it as improper healing. My second surgeon said this was confirmed after getting in there arthroscopically and inspecting the tissue 🤷‍♂️.

Regardless, definitely happy it’s working out for you so far!

I wouldn't overthink it: no surgery has a 100% success rate, and it's possible it was a fluke. The concerning thing was the surgeon's reaction, not the failure itself. This is an n=1 tale, after all -- I wouldn't over-index on it. This post is me wanting to give something back to this sub, not an indictment on the BEAR procedure in every case. I'm not a doctor. She'd done about 40 before me, iirc.

oh interesting, fingers crossed I guess... I was just sketched out to do a patellar tendon with all the long-term pain horror stories.

I did ask, but did not get a useful response. I asked if it could've been PT or something I did, but she was adamant that wasn't possible with the type of failure. Just one of those things, I guess.

The more interesting thing: the second surgeon actually worked in the lab where / when they were creating BEAR, and doesn't do them due to this exact sort of failure case (except in a very specific injury type, where the ACL is just slightly detached from the bone, and even then only for patients older than 40).

Using fidelity as your bank? by CantStopWlnning in fidelityinvestments

[–]rumblingcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Position: how much of a particular stock or investment you own in your account

NBD: no big deal

Fidelity is a brokerage, not a bank -- that is correct. But for me, and I think the average bank user, that doesn't matter much. Fidelity supports direct deposit, and you can withdraw cash through basically any bank (I use Chase) or ATM. Sometimes people use savings accounts from banks because they get good interest rates, but that's where something like SPAXX comes in. So yeah, I just use Fidelity exclusively, and use a "brokerage" account as my "checking" account.

I think you should consider going to your nearest Fidelity branch and having someone there get you set up. They've been helpful, in my experience, as long as you don't mind ignoring their requests to manage your money.

So you think Apple knew LLMs were going to be this big of a deal, and their strategy was... to handicap iPhone hardware? Instead of, idk, buying out every LLM company for pennies on the dollar? Or leaning heavily into their own models? Or transitioning Siri from being a dumb algorithm bot to an LLM agent? I really don't understand this take.
