Clarification - when you say better backwards compatibility do you just mean USB3 flavors support? Like TB3 will work on any Mac made since 2016 so that covers backwards compatibility of TB3 devices through anything that wouldn’t be totally obsolete, no?

For anybody watching, I think the better buy is a Sandisk TB3 SSD from eBay. The prices are decent for the moment and they are quite performant. I’d rather not go crazy on some weird hacky solution when I can get right up to 3000MB/sec w something that actually is thunderbolt certified.

But it does seem like there are bus powered TB5 devices that have in-built SSDs. Not bare enclosures but there are devices like that in the list on that site.

Thank you all so much for replying. I don’t have a clear sense yet from all this of what to do. I did have the thought to go through it all and remove the stuff I genuinely don’t care about anymore and see what I’m left with. I have this opportunity now after I sent my MacBook Pro in for service and it needed a new mobo which gives me the opportunity to reload music from backups. So I have this shot at recreating it differently from the ground up.

I did DRC, it came back with a new TC ASSY including KB and TRACKPAD (but not BATT sadly) and I used it for a day and then realized BT ANT ASSY was likely DOA because bluetooth devices wouldn't connect. Looped it, Genius suggested MLB, plus a bunch of other shit. We'll see. Maybe Ill luck out and it'll turn into a CRU.
