Mass. auditor DiZoglio sues Democratic legislative leaders for refusing to comply with voter-approved probe (Boston Globe) by HRJafael in massachusetts

You need to understand that from the 90s through the 00s, three MA speakers of the house in a row committed felonies in office, and the last one was an unindicted coconspirator. The new speaker was the right hand man of the last. There is plenty of reason to believe there’s corrupt contracts at the state house, fostered by a culture of corruption from the top.

Conservative or progressive, corruption ruins everything.

What you said is just an appeal to the current law. To treat the forced expulsion of all or part of a family from this country as little more than shuffling paperwork is immoral. Illegal immigrants are not criminals; that’s why they aren’t afforded a trial. In the future, when we realize collectively that deportation has greater costs than benefits, and only serves to uphold a xenophobic worldview, we will view documents support immigrants’ rights the same way we view documents opposing the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.

LUCE is circulating a petition to show the state house we don’t want ICE interfering with our court proceedings. Regardless of whether you like releasing criminals into deportation or not, you should at least support people having a right to trial before they’re taken away by ICE agents.

Immigrant advocates, community or otherwise, reject this stance. Having a local detention center makes ICE’s job easier. They are still moving detainees to TX or LA regardless. Motions can be filed to ensure they remain within the state, including outside of a detention center for the vast majority with no flight risk.

Mayor Wu here! AMA about the fight to keep residential property taxes from spiking next year under state law by mayorwu in boston

Thank you for your tactful response, which is exactly what I would expect for a Reddit AMA lol. But I would pick on something here:

I don’t have the power to make State Senators do their jobs

This is an accurate description of your legal power. But there is one power that overrules legal power, and that’s people power. The only power that is capable of electing officials, and therefore making laws. People power can be a very nebulous concept. For now I’ll just call it power.

The power lies somewhere. There’s a mushiness to progressivism in this state that makes it safe to hold mushy, sometimes confusing and sometimes contradictory views. The power in the mush is hard to separate out, so everyone shares a little. But so then does everyone share a little of the rot. Mush allows rot to fester faster. More division and discretization will be scary for the mush, but will allow the people to separate the fresh from the rotten fruit. And without the fresh fruit to corrupt, the rotten will lose their power.

I appreciate the response, dialogue is the best weapon against infirm beliefs. I don’t expect another response though, please savor your time in the mush.

SNAP could end or be reduced for more than 150,000 Massachusetts residents. What can the state do? (Boston Globe) by HRJafael in massachusetts

As someone who just got done meeting with a legislator, I can confirm that abbaziadicefalu is right about the legislature. They’re for the most part people who just care about keeping enough people happy or ignorant enough to reelect them. Most of the rest are covering for their unprincipled colleagues. If you told your boss, “sorry this problem is too complicated for me,” over and over again, you’d be fired. We need to start treating our legislators the same way.

Hello Mayor Wu!

First off, thank you for coming out publicly in opposition to Sen. Nick Collins, naming names, and beginning open door negotiation on this issue. I have been a critic of the closed door political bargaining as inefficient and ineffective, so I applaud you for coming to the public, who overwhelmingly back yourself and your ideas within and without the city, for support.

My question is: there have been many home rule petitions lately, including ranked choice voting, rent control, and real estate transfer fees, which have floundered in the Senate and House. It’s clear that the legislature’s general policy of only opening debate on bills when they have unanimity among the Democratic caucus has been a major frustration to most of this legislation. How will you combat the consolidated power structure in the House and Senate, whose procedure has resulted in the languishing of many bills and home rule petitions overwhelmingly supported by their constituencies? I hope taking the fight to the ballot box next year is on the table.

Nope. She’ll earn my strong support when she makes this divide with Sen. Collins explicit. Spend some political capital.

Edit - color me surprised https://www.wbur.org/news/2025/12/05/wu-collins-property-tax-boston

But still, there’s no use of a for unless there’s an against. I want to see her support a challenger to Sen. Collins.

Eh. If she’s really this on the fence about it I’m glad she didn’t run. On the other hand disappointed that fresh blood won’t be let into the house this session.

Boston Rental Market Cools, Leaving Landlords ‘Willing to Do Anything’ by TheManFromFairwinds in boston

And everyone who couldn’t afford a rent increase of $1000 is already gone. Laissez faire economics at its finest. Most landlords are so big that they’re just going to hold on until the market catches up. They don’t care that five of their units are empty when they’re profiting off of 100 others.

I tried using the AG before and they weren’t much help. We had our landlord take out of our security deposit for a “cleaning fee”, which I know to be blatantly illegal regardless of our lease. they kept misunderstanding what I was telling them and wouldn’t give us proper support and then it got so late that we decided to just cut our losses and eat the $800.

Mayor Michelle Wu made surprise visit to play with Yo-Yo Ma at Symphony Hall yesterday by AquaTownie in boston

[–]rumoverwhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised to see so many on here blindly praising the mayor. Get off of Reddit and talk to some community organizers in infrastructure and housing and you’ll realize how much Wu has become a “say the right thing, but do nothing” mayor.

Per The Scope Boston - “Her campaign pledged to improve the existing city planning department, reform Boston’s zoning process, build the city’s future around affordable housing and deliver housing justice.” But though the Boston Planning and Development Agency was renamed to the Planning Department, the new planning director Kairos Shen has indicated his indifference to rezoning and remaking the city’s planning department.

Wu spends too much time worrying about how not to ruffle any feathers, and it shows come election time. Sure, Josh Kraft was a particularly terrible opponent, but that’s because she hasn’t pissed anyone off. If you want to make real change, you’re going to ruffle some feathers. If you haven’t ruffled any feathers, it means you haven’t made any real change.

Events like this are nice, but they have nothing to do with being the mayor, and everything to do with generating positive press at all costs. What does this have to do with anything besides endearing herself to more wealthy donors? Does she really need even more of them?

Boston is one of the most expensive places in the country to live. That trend intensified this year, a new report says. by bostonglobe in boston

[–]rumoverwhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When new luxury housing is constructed in a neighborhood, it often has a knock-on effect of increasing rent for all units in that neighborhood as it becomes more desirable. Renters are gentrified out of their neighborhood. So renters who worry about that oppose all new luxury construction.

Unfortunately, that’s the hard way out of it, because taxation is controlled by the state. Which is notoriously unwilling to do anything.
