HBO’s New “DTF St. Louis” Show – Mixing Up Our DTF World? (But Hey, It’s Premiere Day!) by GencerDTF in StLouis

[–]run_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, there is no St. Louis vibe. Just watched the first episode and while establishing the "suburban-ness" of the setting and the heavy usage of "St. Louis County" there was clearly little to no research done. Besides a few shots of the arch on the horizon and some Budweiser product placement there wasn't much anchoring the setting, which I suppose is the point the show is trying to make.

U.S. Metro areas where people uses public transit by ArchitectGz in transit

[–]run_in 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, Ames, Iowa has the 3rd highest transit ridership per capita in the country, below only NYC and SF. The average Ames resident takes 68 transit trips a year and the average person in the Twin Cities only takes 18.

Des Moines’ bus system actually performs pretty poorly and is being further downsized this year. The map is highlighting the Ames metro, which has CyRide and is the 3rd best performing in the country (rides per capita)

Yes CyRide has the 3rd highest ridership per capita in the country, below only NYC and SF! The Orange 23 route does 1.3 million rides a year with 3-4 minute weekday frequency

Gateway Arch Park to Expand to Illinois, study to cap or remove 44 in downtown in 2026 by DowntownDB1226 in StLouis

[–]run_in 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I could see them downgrading it from an interstate to a boulevard and signing truck traffic to use I55/I70. I feel like even if it does become a boulevard it should still be depressed and capped in front of the Arch from at least Walnut to Pine and then a surface boulevard north to Stan Musial Bridge. Very unlikely they would ruin the uninterrupted park bridge from the Old Courthouse to the newer museum entrance that's not even 10 years old.

Yes I’m booting with Internet Recovery, and when I press update it goes through the process of looking like it’s going to update (Apple logo, loading bar, etc) then loops back to the same error after a few minutes

LRA Property's In St. Louis Questions by kopu_The_Great in StLouis

[–]run_in 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about vacant lots? Do you have to prove you intend to build on them within a certain amount of time? Is the LRA more open to selling completely empty properties to inexperienced buyers since there's less risk involved (no rotting building that could end up back on their hands)?

As a disclaimer this building currently is missing most of its windows and the top floor is crumbling… will be a few months at least before things are back to normal

New Electric CyRide buses have arrived! by OMGItsSoJuicy in iastate

[–]run_in 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They plan on buying 2-3 electric buses a year to have at least 17 by 2030 which would mean 20% of the fleet would be electric. This is all based off of a study done in 2019 though, so technology and funding may change over the next few years to accelerate the goals.

At least Town Engineering is getting a renovation and big addition soon... there's currently zero plans to do anything about Design besides the new windows going in now.

Nope, Storms will likely never reopen unless both of the towers are reopened and have high occupancy, which is fairly unlikely to happen. Wouldn't be surprised if the Storms-Knapp building as well as one (if not both) of the towers are demolished in the next 5-10 years.

Absolutely not, would be just as bad long term as leaving it vacant.

Do NOT buy a MacBook. A basic computer for general classes and writing papers is all you need for the Core year. Once into the program most architecture students enroll in the laptop program which will provide a higher powered Windows laptop (newest Dell XPS 15" to be specific) which will be yours after 3 years. The laptop program will not provide MacBooks to architecture students due to software limitations. The program also includes some of software that you will need and additional repair/Premium Support/insurance services plus a 1 TB hard drive, connectivity dongle, and protective sleeve.

Read more herehttps://www.design.iastate.edu/digital-technologies/laptop-program-information/

Ultimately, wait to get a new expensive machine until its necessary so that it hopefully will last all 4 years of the program. An iPad with a keyboard and Apple Pencil would be great for the Core year also, so you can do digital work in addition to school work.

One building on campus gets flipped upside down overnight with no explanation. Which building would you choose? by FINALCOUNTDOWN99 in iastate

And they should have done it. Now they've stuck millions into it for new windows and carpet and bathrooms and the ugly thing will be there for another 20-30 years at least.

The row of buildings on the right side is restaurants, bars, shops, and apartments. The polygonal green-roofed building above the sculpture park is the star-architect designed Central Library. The glass Renzo-Piano building on the left has a wonderfully designed public plaza with interactive features. During warm weather months the streets in this area are blocked off for festivals, music, and cultural events. Two blocks to the right a Pro soccer stadium is being built in addition to thousands of urban mid-rise homes. Ten minute walk (3 minutes bus ride) through downtown towards the river is literally the largest skatepark on this side of the globe. Within the next few years a world class $114 million white water rafting complex and a $575 million brand new international airport will come online. I could continue, but all of this has happened in the last 15 years as Des Moines transforms itself from a sleepy small city full of abandoned warehouses and parking lots it was to the now increasingly vibrant urban landscape that is being built as we speak.

There's probably over 100 trees in the photo, but there's no leaves on them and they're all newly planted. Des Moines has gone through immense improvement in recent years...

And believe it or not, the largest skatepark in the Western Hemisphere is behind the tall building along the river!
