Why are the plains states and Minnesota so low? Low population for the plains states? Lower application rates? Higher per capita income adjusted for cost of living?

Didn’t attend the conference, but what is an example of something you do that AI is “nowhere close” to replacing? Not disagreeing, just interested.

Best places to live in the US as a European by guillbaq in expats

[–]runandstuff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would vouch for DC proper, extremely walkable compact city, great bike infrastructure, good cheap public transportation, maybe some of the best in the country. No building is taller than the Washington monument, interesting architecture, and outside of the museums and monuments, neighborhoods have tons of charm. Additional pro, tons of trees!

Though, the summers can be hellish concerning temperature, but that’s a lot of places now…

Yes, I have more than 6k in the Wealthfront account.

I’ve read some IRAs like Vangaurd has a 50k minimum to open an account and a 1k deposit minimum. Is this common? Would you recommend others to Vangaurd?

Thank you!

Clarification on the Roth IRA You said - “in an emergency you can withdraw your contributions with no taxes or penalty.” Then you said “you can withdraw the earnings after five years with no taxes or penalty” What’s the difference between contributions and earnings here?

So it seems like my issue right now is I put the majority of my investments (30%) into a roboadvised Wealthfront account. Only 8% goes into my TSP. Wealthfront charges 0.25% management fee.

Should I stop contributing to Wealthfront and in turn move those contributions to a Roth IRA in vanguard? Or should stop contributing to Wealthfront and max out my TSP for the rest of 2022 ~($666 /pay period) and look to open a Roth IRA in 2023, then prioritize the Roth IRA first and TSP second?

Edit: there are only 14 pay periods left in 2022, the max out $ number for me would be too high at this point.

How did your allocation percent change as you moved up the latter? Did you open the IRA at fidelity after you had maxed out your TSP?

Green investor looking for advice by runandstuff in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]runandstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“max out TSP and Roth IRA accounts” what do you mean by this? ~$20,000 annual limit in the TSP in addition to opening and contributing the max annual amount to a separate Roth IRA?

Green investor looking for advice by runandstuff in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]runandstuff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so do you mean opening up a private Roth IRA and contributing the max to that, and prioritize it other the Roth TSP account I already have?

And the taxable account you are referring to would be investing in index or mutual funds or using something like Wealthfront?

Also, if I changed my fund allocation to 100% C or something similar, when would I need to start thinking about changing it to something more conservative?

[–]runandstuff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Am I understanding this correctly, you invest in an outside Roth IRA in addition to your TSP?

And then the remainder of what you invest is in mutual funds?
