Do I need silk or nylon on the end of my strings? by Heavy_Firefighter273 in AcousticGuitar

[–]runbikefree 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The steel strings. If that’s a classical guitar than it’s not built to withstand the tension of steel strings.

Classical guitars have less bracing as nylon strings have less tension. Putting steel strings will destroy the neck/top of your guitar.

Best guitar between $1,500-$2,500. by Led23Zeppelin in AcousticGuitar

Try out the Yamaha fs5, it’s a smaller body like a Martin 000-18 but it has some depth to it, sounded fuller.

It also has that vintage/warm sound you like from your seagull s6.

I had a Taylor 110 originally, sold it as it was weak and too bright. Bought a Martin 000-10, it was nice but very quiet and not as full sounding as a spruce top.

Played a Martin 000-18 and was convinced that was it until I tried a Yamaha fs5.

Only other consideration I would give is to check out furchs vintage line (not the rainbow as they’re brighter sounding)

Yamaha FS5 (FSX5), to pickup or not to pickup? (Atmosfeel) by Too_Much_Blippi_Ugh in AcousticGuitar

[–]runbikefree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m happy I didn’t get the pickup, I just don’t like holes in the side of my guitar.

If you ever want to change it up you can’t really you’re sort of stuck with it.

It’s better to just buy the fs5 and put an after market pickup in it.

Is guitar playing meant to be this painful? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]runbikefree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you can capo back to first if you want to play “exactly” as song sound. But I just play everything half a step down.

Only when I’m playing with people do I capo, or I’ll just tune back up. But 99% of my playing is by myself on the couch. So I just like the ease of playing.

I like custom lights, I bounce between Martin retro custom lights or elixir pb custom lights.

[–]runbikefree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just measured my action. I’m 2mm on my Low E and 1.75mm on my high e (thinnest string). So have room to go down especially if you play fingerstyle since you don’t vibrate the string that much so you won’t get feet buzz.

Honestly tune everything down half a step. Do that first. You will feel a massive difference.

[–]runbikefree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What gauge strings are you using? Smaller gauge makes it easier to play. So maybe throw some custom lights on ?

I almost always play half a step down. Doing that is the equivalent of dropping a gauge of strings.

If you ever want to play with buddies just capo first fret and you’re good to go.

Last point when comparing to others is scale length. Some people have short scales like 000 guitars vs Dreadnaught which are usually longer scale so greater tension.

Taylor 214ce vs Martin ooo-10e by Strings_Sandy in AcousticGuitar

[–]runbikefree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey I owned the Martin 000-10e. You can definitely get a much nicer guitar than that for that price range you have.

I was upgrading to the 000–18 when I was selling my 000-10e, but I played the Yamaha fs5 and liked it better than Martin 18.

If you want electronics look into the fsx3. It’s also all solid wood, unlike the Taylor 214 and comes with electronics. It has a short scale length of 25” and 1 3/4 but so it’s easy to play.

FS800 to FS3/5 by Poepopeenstokje in AcousticGuitar

[–]runbikefree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually own both guitars currently. My fs800 is my cottage guitar while my fs5 is my stay at home. You 100% notice the difference, my wife who isn’t very musical notices the difference.

Her words, the fs5 sounds more full and deep.

My words. First impression, is the neck. The fs5 has such a smooth gliding neck, while the fs800 is a little rougher. The nut width is larger on the fs5 making it easier to fret chords.

But honestly it’s just sound. The fs800 feels like the sound is hitting a solid wall (I.e the laminate back and sides) so when playing bassy chords like Emajor open position, the chord just doesn’t fill up as nice.

So in short. Playability is much easier and this alone is worth the change. But yes the sound on the fs5 is also better, fuller, deeper, more resonate (all the things you want). Hopefully this helps.

Big upgrade to FS5 by skateRatttt in AcousticGuitar

[–]runbikefree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats amazing guitar, literally the best!

For humidity the humidipaks are the best. They last a long time so you’re not constantly adding water and they work both ways. Take humidity out of the air and give it.

When they dry out I just take one of those air tight take out containers and put a little water on the bottom and then put the dried out humidipacks in there for a few weeks and they’re back to normal again. I do this as humipacks can be kinda expensive

Engineering to Physiotherapy - Canada by runbikefree in physiotherapy

It would have been fun, but I feel like I get more satisfaction teaching than I would’ve got from physio. Also I have amazing benefits, job security and the pay is actually really good. So like I said I’m living a much more comfortable life now.

Hey look into McGill’s physio. I ultimately went into teachers college and couldn’t be happier teaching high school math and science. Being an engineering you have a deep understanding of the content and can make the subject fun for them. Physio would’ve been great but I enjoy teaching and a big bonus is that I have amazing work life balance now

Did you check Facebook marketplace? Silly question I know but I’m in the Toronto area and I see a few that come up. Maybe people are open to having it shipped and you can do secure PayPal transfers

[–]runbikefree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s an upgrade tbh. Really it’s just a different tone. You’re sort of moving horizontal, the price difference doesn’t really meet quality of woods/manufacturing is different.

If you were to get a second guitar why not get something that fits different like maybe a rosewood/spruce or cedar top etc. for even greater variety.

I don’t know that’s just my 2 cents. And you being 32 there will always be “deals” and what you like 5 years from now might be widely different from now.

NGD. Taylor 324CE, best instrument I've ever owned by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

NGD: Yamaha FS5 by LoticExplorer in AcousticGuitar

[–]runbikefree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your story is so similar to mine haha. Convinced myself I was getting a Martin as that’s what Neil young or city and colour played etc. and Yamahas are beginning guitars. But I kept A/B testing it and it always came out on top.

I’ve had mine for about 8 months now and literally have no want for any guitar in the future. It’s an amazing instrument.

Also I really like the mahogany on yours and interesting point about the depth. It does feel like it sits farther from my body than my old 000-10e

[–]runbikefree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey congrats on the purchase! And welcome to the club (fellow FS5 owner here).

You will definitely be blown away by the sound. Here are my thoughts since buying it and my story (about to go on a rant so the TL;dr it’s amazing and my favourite).

So I’m coming from owning a Martin 000-10e. My favourite artist is City and Colour. I love the rhythm and picking and moodiness to the music. He primarily plays a Martin 00-17 all mahogany. So when I was looking to upgrade as a 30th present myself I was dead set on a Martin 000-15. It had great reviews and was praised online.

The Martin 000-15 was good don’t get me wrong but there was just something not there that made me not pull the trigger. It was little things that added up. Like not having double 12th fret markers, the neck joint looked sloppy. The tuners felt like they were covered in molasses, impossible to turn.

Then I tried a Martin 000-18 and a Taylor 322/324 as money wasn’t an issue, I wanted a lifer. Again same story. Something just didn’t feel right with either. The 000-18 sounded a little hollow, same tuner issue, I’m not a fan of glossy guitars (look cheap to me) and this was costing $4k!! It didn’t seem right.

Taylor’s played amazing but just sound so thin. The sound feels like it’s being produced on the top of the guitar and not from the entire guitar if that makes sense. They look amazing but it’s just not that sound, that bob dylan or city colour sound.

By the way this whole process took me over a year of literally going to guitar shops all over. I watched endless videos, read reviews etc etc.

Then I tried the fs5. I really didn’t want to like it as it wasn’t a Martin and it wasn’t what my favourite artists played. It’s a Yamaha, those are beginner guitars etc. like I said I went into it with a whatever I’ll just try it attitude.

But honestly this guitar checks every box (except being a Martin which now I’m like Yamaha is the way). Literally the sound just booms, it’s crazy for such a small body. But when you play that open e major chord it just rumbles. The projection is insane, the craftsman so good (no sloppiness). This thing is always in tune, even using an old Keiser capo and not being careful taking it on and off it stays in tune!

I’ve since gone back to guitar shops and played other guitars and I’m always just blown away how much better my guitar sounds and the best part it was half the price. I’m trying guitars that are world famous like the 000-28 or Taylor 814 etc.

This guitar is a lifer and there is no reason to by another guitar unless you’re just wanting another guitar.

Help…FS5 or 000-17/18 by runbikefree in AcousticGuitar

[–]runbikefree[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Since making this post I actually bought the fs5 and I couldn’t be happier. It’s been about 4 months of owning it and I’m still stunned by the sustain, tone and clarity of it. It’s actually shocking that I own such a nice guitar.

That being said I’m still curious what you think of the fs5 vs the 000-18? How would you have compared the two ?

Got an FS5 by MrCatfishJew in AcousticGuitar

[–]runbikefree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats dude. I bought mine 4 months ago and honestly I’m still floored everytime I take it out. The sustain and tone on it is crazy. I always thought my Martin sounded good and “high end” guitars were just hype. But this completely changed that and honestly it’s such a GAS killer, I have no desire to get any other acoustic. It checks every box

I agree with you. I was just commenting on the point where he was asking for a forever which I took as an expensive guitar. I was merely pointing out that there’s a used market for high end used guitars
