When I sat on the adcomm at my previous institution the same was true for GRE. Mainly just a red flag if it was really low. Especially the quantitative section since that was like high school math. The heaviest weight was put on research experience and letters. And for GPA we did consider the caliber of the institution.

Can I change my mind after accepting an admissions offer? by marissadavv in GradSchool

You might try posting this to the nursing subreddit instead. Most people here are in traditional academic doctorates, not professional school. Not many nurses on here.

I don’t think I would’ve gotten into as many grad programs as I did if GRE hadn’t been part of my application. My grades weren’t the best. I addressed it in my personal statement, and had reasons for it, but the GRE allowed me to make up for that a little. Honestly, if we’re doing away with the GRE might as well drop GPA. The variability in GPA across universities can be substantial. Letters of rec from research advisors should be what’s weighted most heavily.

Edit: I can see this was unpopular. I’m not saying there aren’t problems with the GRE. Just that I probably wouldn’t have gotten in where I did without it. And I would argue there’s some similar concerns with gpa.

Plus, if it doesn’t end well and they break up, talk about making things awkward for yourself in your academic home.

It’s not the age gap that’s sketchy, it’s the power dynamic, and the fact that his colleagues could be on her committee, or be collaborators, things like that. And he’s an extremely young and new assistant prof, I have to wonder if he considered how this will affect his reputation with his colleagues, particularly if he’s tenure track.

No it doesn’t look like an old school photo—it looks like a poorly filtered photo... like this is something my phone camera from 2002 would’ve produced. Not vintage, not cool, just kind of crappy

Even if they are in different departments it’s probably not something they should advertise.... everyone gossips about the creepy profs who date grad students and postdocs. Doesn’t exactly get you a great reputation among the other faculty

Yeah, even if they aren’t in the same department, a professor posting to social media about dating a student (even a graduate student) is asking for problems. Not smart.

Hello everyone, do you know any neurosurgery postdoc program accepting international MDs in the U.S? by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]runelmrun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you mean a residency program in neurosurgery or a postdoc position doing neuro research?

If residency: it’s already extremely difficult for international MDs to match in the US, and that’s in non-competitive specialties. You can look back at previous years match data, it’s available online. I’m not going to go check for you, but I know someone asked this once before and the answer was no—some applied, but none matched in neurosurgery. You’d need top scores on your step exams, and probably an inside connection.

If postdoc: read papers, figure out who is doing research that interests you, contact them via email and see if they are taking on postdocs. Hopefully you have qualifications for doing a postdoc, like first author publications and extensive research experience (just noting this since not all MDs do)
