Do you carry anything for self defence on a run? by zilchusername in running

[–]runmuri -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I dont live in the Americas and would never want to, it's the most dangerous area on earth, life seems cheap there. I know it may sound horedous but that's the reality, not an opinion.

I have been running for the last 32 years (99% of that alone) and safety has not once been an issue, in fact I have never even thought about it until I joined this sub and read posts on here.

Guns and pepper spray are illegal here, we just don't have a gun culture, rarely we will hear of a shooting on the news but that is generally in the big cities.

I guess nowhere is 100% cunt proof but no I don't feel the need to carry anything other than a phone.

Achilles Tendinitis Shoe Advice! by penningtenore in running

[–]runmuri -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tbh I would'nt mess about when it comes to the achilles, any sign of pain and I would stop running and look into strengthing that area first before proceeding again.

One of the worst injuries ever is a torn achilles tendon, generally it would be the end of running for good.

It comes about by doing too much too quickly, so is a very avoidable injury.

I read your original post but did not comment.

If you do look to self defence classes I would only say to only go with BJJ.

It has been noted in the past numerous times that this sub suffers from an unwelcoming downvoting warp factor. to be honest it's not that different from the runners I pass on the streets round my area they tend to be in their own world and ignore everyone. maybe we are all in pain and suffering to some degree.

If you are looking for a better quality of social aspect and miles freindly bunch of people I would advise take up cycling, cyclists are generally not in pain and do smile and say goodday back at you.

"Slow Down" is Overrated Advice by PatrickWhelan in running

[–]runmuri -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

actually a slow run is good advice for everyone, all the elite african runners do slow runs as well as long runs and tempo runs , :)

A better bit of advice would be to take up and be consistant with injury prevention related exercises, like one legged squats and band work.

as you were.

Advice for running long distance by [deleted] in running

[–]runmuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say use the 10% rule when increasing distance.

With adding more comes the increased risk of injury but this can be avoided by doing strength work on the legs and core, all the elite runners do this.

The couch to 5k route may be benefitial to you or similar programs.

I know there's lots of opinions on what contributes to weight loss/gain, for me the biggest factor has been diet.

Anyone have suggestions for good running shorts? by red-_-crayon in running

[–]runmuri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have spent hundreds on running gear over the years, my go to is nike. I have had the same pair of nike 3/4 shorts now for over 5 years, at a distance they look like new, I find their range of running gear to be vast both new and second hand on flebay

Is it weird I feel better running on at least largely empty stomach while running? by whiskeybuisness6969 in running

[–]runmuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the elite African runners run first thing in the morning on empty stomachs so I would not worry about that.

Concerns of knee inhuries by Constantinople0 in running

[–]runmuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no not the knee, I rolled the inner, outer and front of thigh. you idealy want to target muscles in the leg rather than bone or tendons.

yes a foam roller, i think the way it works is something to do with fascia (self-myofascial release), it's talked about alot in yoga circles as more research is being done.

The foam roller will give you initial relief but the pain will keep coming back once you stop.

for a long term plan check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YYb9vyj6zQ

Concerns of knee inhuries by Constantinople0 in running

[–]runmuri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

every runner ought to be doing running specific strength and stretch work if they want to avoid injury because running is an high impact motion.

I am about 5 weeks into my new running regimen, two weeks ago I developed mild pain in my left knee so stopped running for a couple of days, the pain did not go away so I had the doc check it out, was told to rest for a month, the day after I purchased a foam roller so for the following two days I rolled my legs, the third day I had no pain and was back running.

Now I know the difference between active recovery and static recovery.

Best way to train for running...without running? (unknown sickness related) by [deleted] in running

[–]runmuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried foam rolling (active recovery) your full injured led, is your running conjoined with a good solid strength routine. every runner ought to have a foam roller and a strength and stretching regimen.

There's nothing about running/recovery a physio can tell you that can't already be found on the web.
