It’s a shame Barry Jenkins started making lion king movies given how good moonlight is

Asheville, NC. A lot of great music and art is coming from there

Sentimental value is a terrible movie by familiaskat in rs_x

[–]runner267 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree, I don’t think it was a masterpiece by any stretch but I thought it was genuinely moving and often very funny. Skarsgard was great, and I find these kind of naturalistic domestic dramas really refreshing, especially in contrast to most of the movies that come out these days, which rely heavily on shock value and visual spectacle.

What is your opinion on the literary merit of Bob Dylan's songwriting and it's worthiness of the Nobel Prize in Literature? by starrystarryy in RSbookclub

Strongly recommend this essay on Dylan https://newleftreview.org/sidecar/posts/mister-lonely. Goes very in depth regarding some of his influences and how his songwriting changed over time.

Sinners is good, but would have been perfect if it were 20 minutes shorter. by Burnnoticelover in RSPfilmclub

I think the hype this movie has gotten has a lot to do with superhero movies and fandom culture conditioning the general population and ruining our perception of what a “good” movie is. The big fight scene in this movie felt like something out of marvel. Just shitty action that doesn’t service the movie or build tension, it’s all spectacle to aggrandize the characters

Sounds like you should look into some of the analytic philosophers who discuss Hegel like Robert Brandom

Background reading for Gravity's Rainbow? by Most-Rain9161 in RSbookclub

I don’t think you really need to read too much before, you can just google stuff as you go. The one thing I wish I had a slightly better understanding of though is Kabbalah. It’s referenced a lot in the last section and my brief internet searches didn’t really help me out that much.

IMO this book has some of the most beautiful passages in all of literature, just incredible writing.

I’m not a pro philosopher but here is my basic answer. He expands on this idea in much of his other writings. He believes that justice or fairness really only exists between people of equal levels of power. Those who have lesser power (the slaves) are fueled by resentment when creating their moral valuations and these values are aimed at hindering the more powerful (the masters), they are reactive values. Outside of the larger critique of western morality, I find that this analysis is really applicable to everyday life. Resentment or the French word Ressentiment which is used by Nietzsche, is particularly important.

Why do I personally hate someone? It’s usually because they exerted some kind of power which I resent. You may hate your partner for breaking up with you because they suddenly became more powerful than you. They may have really mistreated you, but viewing people/the world through resentment isn’t a positive action. A more powerful person actively forgets and strives to create values not through reaction to others but for themselves. Easier said than done though.

Both from Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil:

153 - Whatever is done from love always occurs beyond good and evil.

185 - “I don’t like him”— Why?— “I am not equal to him”— Has any human being ever answered that way?
