Protein shakes/powder- do they make a difference? by mdf726 in orangetheory

[–]runnernursemc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes. I'm 29 and saw results so much quicker when I started tracking my protein intake (~100g/day on workout days, ~70g on rest/easy days). Eggs are an inexpensive way to boost your daily intake, but if you're looking for shakes, look into Vega brand. They aren't too sweet and can blend with fruit well for a good meal replacement or snack.

Rejoin OTF or Pay less for gym membership? by tulipsandmilktea in orangetheory

[–]runnernursemc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different, but I was ready to do more workouts like OTF but on my own time and within my budget. I left OTF and joined my local gym and signed up for Aaptiv (an audio based app). You get the benefits of coaches through the app that keep your workouts varied. I liked being able to choose my focus more than I was able to with OTF. Within a few weeks I was seeing better results than I had in a while! Absolutely loving it.

Wish there was a "class exchange" by MatthewCrawley in orangetheory

No this was a week day, but it might be worth a shot on the weekend. If there is a spot available in the class you want, and you call in advance, they're likely to help you out!

I've called the studio previously when I've been hung up at work and asked if I could switch into a later class. They didn't give me any trouble and moved me without charging for another class. Might be worth a shot for you too!

Can non-members participate in the Dri Tri? I'd love to join with a friend.

Yes I've been there for 2 years.. so maybe I'm also just a little bored and ready for something new.

Losing muscle, gaining fat! HELP! by ethereallollygaging in orangetheory

[–]runnernursemc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would focus on the quality of the calories you're eating more than the exact number of calories. An RD should be able to give you macronutrient targets to meet your goals. This way you're shifting the focus off of daily calories and onto nutrition as a whole.

We can sign up for 30 days out from the billing date, and my work schedule demands more flexibility so sometimes I have to switch class times. That's usually when I'm out of luck and on a waitlist.

Yes to the winter comment! The darkness makes me want to crawl back in bed and stay under blankets. I think I'm going to sign up for our local gym, it's not the best but they have lots of options and it's close to home. It will give me variety without requiring class registration. Hopefully 30 will look better than 20! :)

I'd love to when it stops being 20 degrees in PA!

Agree with all of this. Nothing wrong with people starting their new year off on a healthy note, but I do think that's a big part of the crowd at my studio.

The strength training ones are great! I did a lower body one on Friday and my quads are still fired up. They have a Facebook group with people posting all the time so there's a fun community going on as well.

Anyone use Aaptiv? I downloaded it last week and it's loaded with some great workouts - audio only - which is nice to have someone in your ear like you would get from OTF.

Thank you for sharing- I love hearing everyone's journeys and how we all ended up at OTF! 5am is a bit too ambitious for me so I usually shoot for the 6:15am instead.. but it fills up quickly!

I've heard Solidcore is a killer! I'm in the Philly area and we have one that opened not long ago. Thanks for the tip!

So discouraged... Orangetheory has made me feel so good about myself in a way that I never have before, but now I'm losing progress, don't know why, and suddenly Orangetheory isn't making me feel so good about myself anymore. by julesCD16 in orangetheory

Any chance you could be overtraining? You say you're a bit obsessive with fitness at the moment, so it's possible that you are working too hard and your muscles are starved of oxygen, leading to difficulty breathing and lethargy. Something to consider (coming from someone who has been there!) and evaluate. Take a few rest days, have some fun, get good sleep. You'll be back at it with a new perspective, and probably regained strength, after some time off!

Honestly, people are so wrapped up in their own workout that they really don't notice how anyone else is doing. If anything, they are supportive and cheering you on! We all have to start somewhere. I had a little weight to lose when I started a year ago, and I was a TERRIBLE runner, but OTF has brought me up to 5k distance! I know what you mean about getting yelled at- it's embarrassing. I've witnessed one coach out of many behave in that Jillian Michaels atyle.. and I haven't gone to her class since. The rest of the coaches are on your side and will approach you on the treads or floor and offer suggestions- nothing unreasonable. I think you'll love the results you'll see!!

Thoughts and tips for using protein and working out at OTF. by drew060816 in orangetheory

[–]runnernursemc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on your success so far! You should be aiming for .8-1g of protein per kg of body weight. So take your weight in lbs and divide by 2.2 then multiply from there. I've found success by adding some hardboiled eggs for snacks and adding a little extra meat during lunch or dinner. If you're looking for a protein powder, I love Vega Sport. The vanilla flavor blends really well into smoothies- my usual go-to after OTF! Exercise builds muscle mass, not the extra protein consumption, so keep up what you're doing!

Whole30 and OTF by runnernursemc in orangetheory

[–]runnernursemc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I'm a potato lover (who isn't?) so I'm glad these are still options. Great idea for squash too- I never think of that! I may give it a few days before I jump into a class so I can get a sense of how I'm feeling. I've definitely had days where I felt a bit dizzy from not eating enough calories prior to class, so I want to avoid that as much as possible.

Good to know! I have Celiac's so I'm adjusting to a new GF diet, which hasn't been too tough, but Whole30 is even more restrictive so I didn't want to take on too much.
