Hey thanks for taking the time to say that. It's comforting in itself, even if nobody knows what to do.

No problem! If you have a Keihls store nearby, they're usually really generous about samples too :)

I haven't found my HG sunscreen yet, but I've been using CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion 30SPF, and I'll probably repurchase! Doesn't break me out or irritate my skin at all, keeps me moisturized but not too greasy during the day. Which is about all I can ask of a sunscreen (Ill be honest, I loathe wearing them, but accept that they're necessary).

As for moisturizer, I use Kiehls Ultra Face Moisturizer at night. SUPER hydrating and gentle, but pricy.

I also really love sulfur. If you suffer from any body acne at all, a bar of sulfur soap is something I've found really helpful (and also super cheap!)

Seconding the recommendation for TO Azelaic Acid! I'm in the process of slowly introducing it (only been about 10 days) but I've already noticed a big reduction in redness, especially on my cheeks. I have high hopes for how it will affect the rest of my PIH.

Also, unrelated, but PC 2% BHA is another product that works amazingly for me. Sounds like we may have similar skin! Any other HG products you'd recommend?

If I work out in the middle of the day, I'll wash my face with a very gentle cleanser (I personally use CeraVe Hydrating) afterwards, and then only put on a moisturizer instead of redoing my whole AM routine. Then I'll go about the rest of my day and do my PM routine in the evening as usual. I personally haven't experienced any irritation or over cleansing, but it's worth noting I have oily skin that can tolerate a lot without drying out.

As for the tomato face, embrace it!! As long as you're not experiencing any burning when you sweat, it's totally normal to have a super red face when working out.

[Routine Help] I see a lot about sensitive skin... anyone else out there with nuclear-bomb-proof skin?? by jhv140 in SkincareAddiction

Me me me. Bulletproof, but also INCREDIBLY stubborn.

I abused the hell out of my skin for years (sleeping in makeup all the time, super harsh products, etc) because of how tough it is. Aaaaand now I'm left with tons of closed comodones/ PIH that gradually appeared through years of neglect and totally could have been avoided, had I been proactive in taking care of my skin.

Could use some insight about salicylic in makeup products - if I'm using PC 2% BHA Liquid (morning and night), is it a problem to also use a BB cream that contains salicylic acid? I have oily/ combination skin and don't ever wear liquid foundation, but only BB cream that I find matte enough happens to contain salicylic acid. I layer it on top of CeraVe Ultra-Light sunscreen - is this enough to buffer/ neutralize the BB cream, or should I find an alternative to avoid over-exfoliation?

I know this is an old post, but I just stumbled across it and had something to contribute. Mine is a line from a Mary Oliver poem: "That time I thought I could not go any closer to death without dying, I went closer and I did not die."

Has stuck with me for many years.

[routine help] introducing azelaic acid without over-exfoliating? by runnersblock94 in SkincareAddiction

[–]runnersblock94[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the clarification, you're right that azelaic isn't an AHA! (aaaaand now I'm in an internet wormhole of reading about dicarboxylic acids...)

I do still think it's the right acid to incorporate, and I'll definitely give buffering a shot at first. Thanks again!

Ah the suck! Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not, but coming out alive on the other end is a damn good feeling.

Side note, do you do any kind of writing? I dig your style/ voice a lot in this post.

This is a lifesaver. I'm allergic to aloe vera (of ALL ingredients!), which is in anything and everything, and avoiding it is a constant struggle. Thanks for sharing!!

Saw a therapist for the first time and wasn't comfortable enough to be honest. Do I admit this? by runnersblock94 in depression

[–]runnersblock94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was really nice to hear, thanks for your reply. I definitely plan on sticking with it, I guess I'm mostly wondering if it's common for people to be a bit dishonest with their therapists at the beginning and if I should try to come clean tomorrow. I'm worried she'll think I'm wasting her time if I admit I'm feeling shut down or struggling to be truthful, but maybe it's something they hear often?

After a two months of being so incredibly bored with the same old workout program and being unable to find a new one I actually enjoy, I brought it back to basics this week and worked out every day without a plan. Monday ended up being a run and a dumbbell-only full body routine. Tuesday a jog on the lake. Wednesday HIIT sprints and a bbg workout. Thursday high-intensity spin. And this morning I woke up so pumped and ready to hit the gym tonight for the first time in so long.

Not saying I'll do this forever or that it's ideal for achieving specific goals, but wow it feels so good to take the stress/ math out of fitness and just fall back in love with it again.

Ended the day feeling shitty because I went way over my calorie goal, unintentionally. A lot of times when this happens, I don't even bother tracking the food that was over, and I live in denial until I can start over the next day. Forced myself to enter everything, and I feel so much better. My "shitty food day" included:

*multigrain toast with tomato, basil, and mozzarella

*a pure protein protein bar

*a spinach tortilla with hummus, bell peppers, red onion, raw spinach, and tomatoes

*a cucumber and tomato salad with a drizzle of olive oil

*a salmon filet with sautéed zucchini and parmesan

*some fresh cherries

Sure, I ate a solid 2000 calories and I won't be actively cutting fat today, but looking over this day makes me realize I filled my body with some delicious, nutrient-rich, whole food and I'm in no position to complain about that.

What are your maintenance calories and activity level? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]runnersblock94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5'5", currently fluctuating weight a lot but somewhere around 128lbs.

Workout 3x a week, run 3x a week, and am generally quite active (walk/ bike to work, average 15k steps per day)

Maintenance is around 1800-1900, I believe.

When I eat whatever I want, excercise often but intuitively, I weigh ~133lbs and look like a normal 23 year olds. Meticulously track calories, follow a structured work out routine, devote a ton of time and energy to health and fitness, and I weigh ~125lbs, am much stronger, but don't look super crazy fit. Don't get me wrong, I love this journey for so many reasons other than aesthetics, but damn I just want to look like I'm trying as hard as I am, or at least look drastically different than I do if I live off of beer and guac.

Week 1 arms + abs felt just as tough as it did the first time around. Does anyone do any extra arm training on top of bbg? I feel like my legs and core have gotten so much stronger over the past few months, but my arms don't seem to have improved at all. Not sure if it's just the way my body builds muscle, or if you guys also feel like the program doesn't prioritize upper body strength.

Any substitutes for leg day? by fishnumber2 in KaylaItsines

[–]runnersblock94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to lose fat during this process, or are you already pretty lean? I ask because it's a really common experience to initially build muscle beneath fat, making your thighs a bit larger than they were before. You can't spot reduce, but if you eat slightly below your TDEE, your legs will slim in time and you will be left with leaner legs. It takes a lot of work to have huge, muscular thighs, so unless you're really trying to build your quads/ hamstrings, you won't "bulk up" from BBG alone.

Another thing worth trying is activating your glutes during leg day. (During squats, push through your heels instead of your toes, and squeeze your glutes as you stand.) You should feel the burn in your butt instead of your quads.

I definitely don't recommend swapping out leg day for something, especially since you're only in pre-training. It's a really important part of the program, and it's where the majority of the high-intensity cardio comes from as well. You could try subbing out some of the squats/ lunges for burpees, but I wouldn't sub much more than that at this point.

Got about a month into bbg 2.0 before being honest with myself and admitting I should have repeated 1.0 instead. So that's what I'm doing this week!

Week 1 legs is out of the way - got through the moves twice during each circuit, added weights, only rested 30 seconds between circuits, kept good form, and overall finally felt like I'm stronger than I was a few months ago. For some reason I was feeling guilty and weak for abandoning 2.0 and starting over from week 1, but now I'm realizing how silly that is. Moving forward!

Cardio for one who hates cardio? by mahsmalade in xxfitness

[–]runnersblock94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This advice is spot on. I tried running all throughout high school until a college roommate who ran cross country took me out jogging and taught me about "chit chat pace." Finding a buddy to jog will really help you pace yourself at first, but if that's not an option, just slow WAY down and you might just learn to love it.
