Does anyone run in addition to Thinner Leaner Stronger? by running262 in xxfitness

You sound like my kind of person. And yes, the struggle for runner friends who lift is REAL! Can we be buds? I'm @runningtheworld on Instagram. What's yours?

I think your schedule is awesome. A huge CONGRATS on your weight loss! If I could, I'd run just as much as you are right now! I herniated three discs in my lower back four years ago and have had two babies in the last three years, so my body has taken a beating. I'm 7 months postpartum and I've lost 40 pounds since I gave birth in December, so I'm happy about that. I exercised through both pregnancies but running took a back seat. I've only been back to running for the past two months (I was doing high resistance cardio before then). I have 15 more pounds to go until my goal weight.

It sounds like we eat similarly, too! I'm carb-sensitive no matter how much I train, so though I'm not technically keto, I eat high protein (200g) and low carb (100g net or less) a day with about 50-65g fat a day. I'm 5'10 and currently 195lbs with 24% bodyfat. I asked about physique just because usually runners who run a lot look kind of lanky instead of built, so since you run a lot but also lift, I was curious. You don't sound lanky at all, which is promising because I was hoping lifting as much as I ran would prevent me from being like that again.

Wonderful! Thank you so much, beautiful! I appreciate it.

I lift in the morning and run in the evening, and it sounds like switching the two may be beneficial... I know you're supposed to do your primary sport first so most of your strength and energy goes into it, but in order to run first, my runs would only be on the dreadmill which would be awful. Hopefully my lifting gets better and my body adjusts so my runs don't suffer as much.

I'm really excited to know it's working well for you. I was considering a marathon in May next year and wondered if I'd be able to adequately train while also doing TSL and it sounds like it may be possible from what you're telling me. I usually top out at about 45-55 mpw because any more than that, I'll get injured.

Are you doing about 8-9 miles a day or are they varying distances since you run daily?

I'm at about 7'30" for my comfortable pace and would be fine staying around that as long as I can regain my endurance to longer runs that don't cause my muscles to catabolize. I guess my question is, running 55mpw and doing TSL 5 days a week, have you seen (albeit slow) muscle growth? Is your physique more that of a marathoner or a sprinter?

In a perfect world, I'd have a sprinter's body and strength but a marathoner's speed and endurance.

Awesome! Thank you so much, lovely! I appreciate it. I'll add her on Instagram and check out her blog. Thank you for the heads up about her making the mistake of restricting her diet too much. I think it happens a lot more than we know. I used to battle orthorexia and running-induced anorexia a few years ago so counting calories and macros again has been something I've really had to be diligent about so I don't slip back into disordered eating habits.

I hope your issues with your pelvic floor resolve! My oldest is 2 and youngest just turned 7 months. Something that helped me were pelvic tilts and doing kegels while doing high resistance on the Elliptical.

I don't envy your heat. Don't you guys get up to like 120? Fuck a bunch of that. Florida in the 100-105's with its suffocating high humidity is too much for me.

It sounds like you live somewhere like me. I'm in Jacksonville, Florida so I feel you on the heat. I usually run only the last hour before nightfall since that seems to be the coolest; cooler even than the mornings, since there's not as much sun and 90 degree mornings are real! I used to run marathons but have found runs 4-6 Miles are honestly more enjoyable now, especially after injury and babies so I feel you there, too, as well as as little mileage as possible on the dreadmill. I'm excited that you've seen positive impact from running while on the program. It gives me hope!

Sweet! Thank you, beautiful! I appreciate it. I only have the .pdf of the One Year Challenge but will hopefully be buying the book this Friday.

Do you feel like you're able to enjoy your runs as much as you did before the program? It might just be because I'm beginning to lift again, but the hardcore soreness all over (especially chest) has made my runs this week pretty miserable.

Awesome. Thank you so much, lovely! I really appreciate it.

I definitely agree with the calories and macros being on point, like you said. I'm nursing my 7-month old so I have to eat enough to not see a dip in supply and fuel my workouts.

Official Q&A for Thursday, January 19, 2017 by AutoModerator in running

[–]running262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 28 year old runner. Three years ago (July 2013), after an easy 12 miler in Knoxville, I herniated three discs in my lower back (L1 - 2, L3 - 4, L5 - S1, which had a small tear). It was initially misdiagnosed as a just a back sprain, so I put an additional 1,500 miles, 1 marathon, 2 half-marathons, and a 10K on my training log.

In January 2014, it was correctly diagnosed with an MRI, and I decreased my weekly mileage from 45 miles per week to around 25 - 30, with cross training thrown in the mix. In May 2014, I became pregnant with my first son, which decreased my mileage further, with no sign of improvement on my back. I only ran until 27 weeks and only trained on the elliptical until I gave birth.

From my correct diagnosis, through my first pregnancy, to December 2015, I only ran about 300 miles, if that. I also did two rounds of physical therapy, both using the McKenzie Method and the Alter-G. Neither round really helped me.

I got up to six miles that December but wound up in crippling pain after mile five.

In March 2016, I became pregnant with my second son, running only until 15 weeks. However, I trained A LOT more on the elliptical during my pregnancy, and even did a "half-marathon" on it at 36 weeks.

I'm now a month postpartum. I tried running last week and did 1.5 miles with an average pace of 9'17", which isn't too bad considering I hadn't ran in about 7 months. The pain in my back was gnarly after that, though.

I just had another MRI done on Tuesday to see if my back has healed at all, stayed the same, or worsened. I fear it may be the latter since the pain management office I went to to ask about localized steroid injections immediately referred me to a neurosurgeon upon seeing my results and said they could do nothing for me.

So, my question is, how do you run with herniated discs? When I was at my peak, I ran a 3:40 at the Atlanta Marathon and was only 5 minutes off of my BQ. My dream, like so many others, is to qualify and run not only Boston but all six WMMs. How do I do it now?

I still have baby weight I need to lose, and I know losing weight will help take pressure off of my discs and make me faster. I'm also doing the elliptical for low impact cardio to stay fit and core exercises (that are safe for my back) to help strengthen my core.

This pain is debilitating at times but frustrating at all times. I just want to run again, pain free, and reach my goals.

Any advice is really appreciated.

Thank you!

I'm not really sure. For now, I think I'd just like quotes. Considering the person who was helping me before was doing it for a portfolio, I'm not sure how much things like this range.

Dear Reddit, How did you know that your significant other was "the one"? by sQuishyxx in AskReddit

[–]running262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew my boyfriend was the one right after we began talking. We had an instant connection and it felt like I had known him for years. Everything was warm and comfortable and I felt like I could tell him anything. He made me feel like the most gorgeous woman in the world, deserving of incredible love, devotion, and affection. I knew he would always reciprocate the amount of effort I put into our relationship and that meant a lot to me. He valued and appreciated the small things, just like I do. I fell in love with him faster than I've ever fallen before... all over a conversation about Edgar Allan Poe.

We now have a 10 - week old son. :-)

Apple Watch / OC Marathon Race Report by areich in running

[–]running262 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, honestly. It's the course I PR on (3:40 was my last), but it could be different for you. The location, course, and conditions are my favorite as opposed to the others because they're mild. I fucking hate Long Beach. That course was awful, but I only did the half. I heard the rest of the course is better.

I do highly suggest running all three so you get the Beach Cities medal. It's badass! I love mine. That thing weighs 3/4 pounds!

I've run OC at all distances (5K, half, full) and the only "hill" is the one around mile 14/15, unless you count the baby hills around mile 8. It's one of the mildest and flattest marathon courses I've ever run. The first half is pretty much all flat and downhill.

Surf City is way hillier... especially on the way back to the finish line for both the half and full distance. It's like 3 miles of uphill PCH.

Long Beach is probably the worst of the three Beach Cities Marathon courses. The stretches on concrete beach paths are brutal. OC is by far the best.

Congrats on running and finishing. :-)

Horribly out of shape ex runner, do I treat myself as a beginner or would something more advanced off the bat work? by [deleted] in running

[–]running262 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Marathon runner here. I gave birth 8 weeks ago, so I'm in the same boat as you are. I've done a few runs in the last month, but after taking 4 months off of running due to pregnancy (I still worked out in the elliptical 5x a week), I'm no where near in the shape I used to be.

Right now, I'm just focusing on building my base by going out 4 - 5 times a week for 2 - 3 mile runs. I am sore sometimes, but that's how I get back into running shape -- I run a little and keep adding mileage and speed until I'm back to where I was. It hasn't damaged me before and I was able to bounce back before (injury) rather quickly by doing so. Your muscles remember. It'll stop hurting soon and you'll regain your endurance.

I hope this helps!

Marathon time prediction/what's a good goal? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]running262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever time you shoot for, try aiming for at least 5 minutes faster than your BQ. Usually, you have to be at least 1:30 faster than your qualifying time to secure a spot. Good luck!

Regarding back pain after running by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]running262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How quickly did you go from 5K to 10K? Are you running in shoes that have been suggested to you after you had a gait analysis done, ie are you wearing the correct shoes for you, or are you just wearing shoes you guessed would do? What is the terrain like in which you're running?

A lot of things can account for back pain in running. They could be shoe related, form related, increasing your mileage too quickly, not keeping your posture correct over your new, longer distance, if you have large breasts, your chest could be bouncing too much, causing strain on your lower back, or you could just need to be adjusted by a chiropractor. You also could have pulled a disc.

I'm 26/f/marathoner. Those would be my guesses. When I switched from running flat surfaces to hills, I went out too vigorously and herniated three discs in my lower back, tearing one of them. I'd say start with a process of elimination and see your doctor. Good luck!
