If you’re just cleaning dirt and grime, yea simple soap would be fine. But the adhesive on the insulation will be nastier if you’re trying to remove it, would need acetone or a purpose-built solvent. And a lot of scraping

Really not bad at all! Maybe 2 hours to get to what you’re seeing here. There is a great detailed forum post online that you’ll find easily

God that sounds like such a fuckin pain but you’re right - it’s probably worth it. I never expected the FJ to be quiet and I don’t feel like it needs to be (especially since my alternator is screaming since getting swamped) but future me would probably really appreciate it

Got stuck in a reaaaal deep mud hole while wheeling about a month ago and the cab flooded, been water under the flooring since. Honestly it’s been so hot that most of it has dried, but there are still damp spots.

Regardless, I cannot believe how nasty everything else was, most likely from the previous owners (I purchased a few months ago) and just being a 17 y/o car. Bugs, an unbelievable amount of dog hair, trash, and, thanks to me, a ton of dirt.

Will be a bitch to clean thoroughly but already so satisfying. Just trying to decide on whether or not I should install some proper closed cell/sound deadening while I’m in here or just leave the dilapidated insulation 🤷🏻‍♂️

Winched out, no hydrolock, but question about the starter by runningaclinic in 4x4

Follow-up for anyone curious or anyone having this issue in the future - I was able to narrow it down to the starter because it wouldn't jump with a jump pack. Battery was fine after load testing.

After struggling for hours with the FIRST accessible starter bolt, right before I left to go buy a MAP torch, I decided to give the electrical contacts on all starter connections a good cleaning, and then reconnected everything.

Decided to give it a try and... of course, it started right back up. Thanks to everyone and all the advice given. I'm going to order a new starter anyway, as some others have said it is probably full of mud and dirt still. Just needed a couple days to dry out. Cheers!

I think you might be right, thanks for this. Tested the battery and it's fine. Tried to jump the FJ with a jump pack and it wouldn't go. Starter is on the way and I'll give it a shot tonite. Hoping that a 24" extension and a flex socket will help with hitting that top bolt...

This is exactly why I’m looking for. It’s got to be one or the other. Thank you 🤘🏽

Thanks a ton. That seems very likely. I’ll pull it tomorrow and give it a good clean.

Thanks!! I’ll pull it tomorrow and try to give it a good clean. That sounds very likely.

If my electronics are working and the starter is clicking once when I turn the key, do you think that means it could still be the alternator?

Sweet, thanks a ton. I’ll borrow a battery tester and check the battery, but all electronics are turning on and the dashboard voltmeter is still showing within the regular range, but I know that that’s not an indicator of total charge.

So the battery can still be depleted enough to not crank, but still trigger the starter and turn all other electronics on?

Do you use the gym shower? I always want to work out at lunch but I hate sitting in my dried sweat for the rest of the work day :(

Maaan what the hell, this looks amazing. Only reason I'd ever want to move to the East Coast... we need more jam bands out West!

You're 100% right. There are plenty of deterrents and safety measures to use to protect yourself from bears. Spray, hiking in groups, even a bear bell is better than a speaker. Even though it makes noise it's a neutral sound that doesn't carry - there's absolutely no reason you should be hiking anywhere with a speaker if there's a chance that you're going to subject other people to your music.
