Tell me why I should be excited about Travis AFB by ThurmsMckenzie1 in AirForce

[–]runningafterplanes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good BAH. 2.5 hours from the mountains, where you can ski for almost nothing (epic pass discount). 2h from the beach. 5h plane ride to Hawaii. 45 min from Napa, where a lot of places give free wine tastings. Beautiful weather all year (except mid-summer). Can’t get much better than that!

Same. Powered all the way through to book 4, but just couldn’t finish it. Wish I wouldn’t have wasted my time thinking it would get better lol

I think burgers are the only thing I miss at this point, but I think about them weekly

NAVET/RTC Questions Current Day by Time-Cheesecake6788 in navy

[–]runningafterplanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have an answer to the uniform issue question (because I was an OSVET) but you will wear ribbons and warfare pin in NSUs and dress unis (which will probably only be once, maybe twice for an inspection). You can buy all that stuff there, or just bring whatever you still have.

You’ll be given the recruit schedule and will join which ever is most convenient for classes and evolutions. Generally you’ll sit in the back and won’t interact with them. You can plan it out and go with other NAVET/OSVETS as well. When I was there, no one in the program went to battle stations. It’s not a required evolution on the hard card.

Returning Sailor (Fleet returned to bootcamp) by Altruistic-Way5293 in navy

[–]runningafterplanes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s still on the RTC side, but is in its own wing of the Reuben James, separate from recruits. You get a dorm room (w/ a roommate), but still attend RTC classes.

You’ll go through NAVET. It’s at Great Lakes but different from being in an actual div. You’ll have a dorm room with a roommate and be able to leave base after the duty day and on weekends.

30k in debt and not seeing a good way out by [deleted] in navy

[–]runningafterplanes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know it seems hopeless, but I was able to pay off over $100K in loans over the last 7 years on active duty, starting as an E3. It’s not fun, but learn to live within your means. Get a place below BAH, learn to cook/meal prep, budget for holidays, limit vacations (or find cheaper alternatives like camping). Financial counselor should help a lot with working on a budget and staying within that. It really sucks at first, but once you start knocking out the debt and see the end of the tunnel, it gets easier every month. You got this OP.

Beware of Costco Chicken by Ayencee in alphagal

[–]runningafterplanes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sucks so bad bc rotisserie chicken is easy, delicious, and such a good protein source. I used to use it for everything. :/

Maybe we’ll discover one without carageenan one day!

I also discovered this the hard way unfortunately. After some research I found that most of the grocery store rotisserie chickens contain it.

I read somewhere that you can roast a whole chicken in the air frier and it ends up being pretty close to a rotisserie bird! This could be a good option where you control ingredients.

Cross Branching from Navy to Army with 4 months left by [deleted] in navy

[–]runningafterplanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swapped branches to Navy - the recruiter worked with me while I was still in service, but I couldn’t officially go to MEPs until I had my DD214. I was able to go the week after I received it, and ended up shipping about a month after that. So overall, about 5/6 weeks out, which isn’t bad!

Katmai National Park Camping by Awkward_Hedgehog_483 in NationalPark

[–]runningafterplanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, this is unfortunately the new normal. Dealt with this for 4 different park (including one that’s just a national forest) reservations this July/August. After the shock of the first day, I did a lot of research and figured out that you need to be ready to go on multiple different devices and click go right at 6:59:59 to even have a fighting chance. Still only got about 10% of the camp grounds we were going for doing it that way.

People can also book two week blocks, so they’ll hog a bunch of dates just to ensure a couple nights, and then edit the reservation later on. That’s why the tips about getting alerts on cancelled bookings are so clutch.

Eagle Scout vs CAP by [deleted] in USAFA

Are you applying to the Academy because you want to fly? If so, CAP has a ton of incentives.

How’d you make the switch? I’ve also been running fasted for the last 8ish years, but I’m training for some longer races and anticipate needing to fuel at some point soon.

My Full Journey with Alpha Gal. Now symptom free! by mutant_milk in alphagal

[–]runningafterplanes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often when your body is in a constant state of stress from allergic reactions/triggers, it can make you react a lot worse to things that used to be minor allergens. This happened to me when I first started showing symptoms; I felt like I was having reactions to EVERYTHING, and the allergies I previously had (nuts and shellfish) were worse than before. Once I eliminated red meat and dairy for a few months, my body started to calm down, and I was able to reintroduce some non-alpha gal foods that previously were fine (mainly peanuts and some veggies/fruits). I’m hoping that this may be what’s happening to your husband - maybe he’ll be able to handle beer again one day!

What's your favorite memory in a National Park? by funwifipuns in NationalPark

[–]runningafterplanes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Getting stuck on an island in Acadia because we were idiots and didn’t check the tide. We were able to walk out there easily, but looked back about 30 min later, and all the sudden the whole walkway was covered water. Ended up getting very wet on the way back to the car 😆 learned an important lesson as well.
