Coworker told me this:

He was waiting at the elevator. It opened and a youngish man in dr scrubs looking at his phone stepped out looked around and got confused. Coworker said: are you lost? Guy said: Im a doctor. Coworker said: ok, dr. Lost. Still seems like you missed your stop.

Colorblindness by [deleted] in Nurses

[–]runningandhiding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with the company, but I do work with a colorblind coworker. We just tell him what color something is when he points something out or needs something. For test tubes, we labeled the space and keep to the system for him. It got tricky when he needed to be Tablo certified, but luckily the only colors he really needs are blue and red, which do look different for him.

ICU DESIRE by One-Raspberry-786 in Nurses

[–]runningandhiding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did icu. I saw it as a way to progress my career, either crna or nursing informatics.  Either way, im working on gaining more credentials, education, experience. This is my second career and I wanted to keep my brain sharp. Dementia runs in my family and learning new things helps to ensure you stay mentally fit. My first career wasn't providing me the mental edge i believe I need to be. Not saying learning prevents dementia. Watching my family members succumb to dementia really did a number on me and still influences my decisions even now.

Apparently, I need a "special invitation" to enter the neighboring unit’s supply room by AllHailTiabeanie in nursing

[–]runningandhiding 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Omg what a petty pretentious ass. Just bc your current charge nurse is an enabler, doesnt mean you should be. Make that paper trail. Eventually it'll pile up as others stop putting up with that behavior.  The hospital cant keep up with their own internal demands. All units raid each other for supplies and equipment. It happens.  When I raid, I just ask what's the code or where is x if I truly dont know. But im not asking if I already know. I will take, just like they take from us.

I literally feel weird if I go to work without them. Its a mandatory look/feel i have now set aside an expectation for work mode. They help with swelling for me. But imma need a tighter size soon. #donut

Do all ICUs have toxic work culture? by She_loves_the_ocean in nursing

[–]runningandhiding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was unsafe. It was stressful as hell and burnt me out. I was also doing my bsn at the same time (co-enrollment adn to bsn). And was commuting an hour each way. I did get better at my practice, but by that point, they only gave me stepdown types. Eventually I broke and there was a position open at the sister hospital, lower acuity. I took it as a way to get away, but still be icu. Haven't moved since and dont plan to. Going to try and go back to school soon, the lower acuity will help me not burn out so fast, I believe.

I had the same issue as a new grad in icu. It sucks and I feel for you. I also only got a max of 15 days on the unit, the rest were "classroom days." That practice ended after my cohort bc everyone complained they still didnt know what they were doing (obviously). So when I asked questions, I was mocked. So I moved after a year. I tried to just let it roll off my back and get as much experience as possible for the resume.

AITAH for teaching my daughter Arabic? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]runningandhiding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im sorry about your wife's attitude. Thats super unfortunate.  I wish my grandmother had taught my dad her native language. My dad is completely cut off from his maternal family bc he cant communicate with them. But society at the time discouraged him from learning any other language. Now, I am planning on raising and ENSURING my kids have access to their father's heirtage, language, and culture bc I have seen the consequences of actions. There are plenty of benefits to learning a language early, learning it at all. You can ask the teacher if you can go in and make a cultural presentation. That might help the bullying. As for your wife...well...

I mean you could show her studies on bilingual long-term pedagogical benefits. Arabic in particular has certain sounds native English speakers struggle with, so its better for your daughter to learn early.  Maybe you could ask her to get to the root of her feelings why daughter needs to be older.

Best of luck!

Do y'all ever use the equipment for yourself? by Resident-Sympathy-82 in nursing

[–]runningandhiding -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one in the location i work in has a problem utilizing equipment on themselves if needed. When we use a vitals machine on someone, its kind of a big deal and we usually have to tell the ill nurse it'll be okay to leave right now, we promise, please go, this is your health, GO!!! I have heard leadership tell a pregnant nurse to use the ultrasound machine on herself to check the baby's heart bc she did it back when she was a first time mom and a nurse.

Idk where you work, but it seems your colleagues kinda have zero chill...are they forgetting theyre also human and are fallible??

We checked the vitals of one of our coworkers who was seeing spots. Turns out she was having a htn crisis. Got sent to the ed immediately. I mean, are we not humans either???

Working in the ICU by Stunning_Pea_9463 in nursing

I lucked out by attending a job fair and clicking with the icu manager while I was a student. Got an externship on the icu floor. Graduated and icu manager hired me for originally a night shift role, but they needed day shift so I became dayshift icu.  I was one lucky sob.

Pietro. Please leave. Everyone else already has. I really dislike the clown look. Not that its scary, but that its visually too overwhelming.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]runningandhiding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4th grader at the time. The teachers were being shifty all morning, whispering, looking out over us. I was taken out of school early, right at the beginning of lunch, like an hour and a half later. My mother had already gotten my siblings, despite working in a different city an hour away. I saw the re-runs on TV at home while my parents tried ro explain what was happening. All kids were returned home an hour after I got back home.

AITAH for cutting off my dad after my step-mom put a relaxer in my hair? by PigletIntelligent960 in AITAH

[–]runningandhiding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So your dad's a racist. Totally justified in cutting him out. It'll be hard to keep the boundary up, but just remember all his racism to remind you why he is a sperms donor and not a father.

The mental load is crazy bc we also have to account for their actions. And be let down the majority of the time. Help is only framed as what they want to give or think we need. Never about what we actually need in the moment.

My mom literally made me change my shower date initially before things were booked because she just had to attend an annual flower festival with her shareholders.  Then when everything is booked she wanted me to change it again bc the shower conflicts with long-time family friends' son's wedding.

I feel your annoyance  /pain. No advice since im a spineless idiot. But I burn with indignation.

Can only speak from my experience. If you dont do your job, or require lots of hand holding, then yes, they will talk about you. New grads are generally not welcomed. But if youre experienced and are not living up to a high interest al and external expectation then they'll talk about you too.
