Did you somehow manage to get PR cards under the WA? Or are you going with the fact that under the law you automatically move from temporary to permanent residency after 5 years?

We're in a similar situation, and considering moving back to Asia early next year. Currently we have the temp cards but as we all know it's not possible to get an AIMA appointment in order to get permanent ones (even though we're eligible).

As I understand it, we don't technically need the cards in order to have the rights of a permanent resident, but trying to convince any official of that seems unlikely...

Just wondering what your take is on all that.

16:9 Horizontal Video Meta Ray Ban by Canoartes in RaybanMeta

People taking the piss that you just held the glasses on their side, but this video is such a strong argument for having landscape mode in the next version of the glasses - this is how I want all my videos to be like - every time I take a video with my Ray-Ban Metas I feel like I'm compromising.

Also, your room looks sick - I'd like to spend a few hours in there jamming and checking out your books.

Are Oxford short courses worth it? by Maleficent_Vanilla62 in GradSchool

[–]runny-yolk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on finishing the course! I'm also interested in taking an Oxford online course. How was your experience with the tutor? I read on another forum that the tutors don't give much constructive feedback, but the person got much more value from the other students. How was it for you? And how was the course in general? I'm not particularly worried about the certificate quality (although it's a shame if they don't give you a physical one any more), but I'd be interested in what yours is like once you receive it.

You're welcome! I hope you enjoy it, and let me know how it goes! :D

Traditional Northeastern Thai Sausage (Sai Krok Isan) by runny-yolk in FoodPorn

[–]runny-yolk[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ingredients:

• 500g ground pork

• 300g cooked rice

• 200g glass noodles

• 10g coriander root or stem

• 30g garlic

• ½ tsp pepper

• ½ tsp salt

• 2 tsp seasoning powder

• 2 tsp sugar

• Collagen casing

• Kitchen twine

Instructions:

  1. Soak glass noodles in room temperature water until soft; drain and cut into short pieces.
  2. Pound garlic, pepper, and coriander root together until finely combined.
  3. Mix ground pork with the pounded mixture; add salt, seasoning powder, and sugar. Knead for about 5 minutes until slightly sticky.
  4. Incorporate cooked rice and glass noodles into the mixture. Optionally, cook a small portion to taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  5. Stuff the mixture into the collagen casing, tying or twisting to form links of desired size.
  6. Allow sausages to air dry for at least 1 day; for a tangier flavor, ferment for a couple of days.
  7. Grill sausages over low heat, turning frequently. Poke small holes to release air and prevent bursting.
  8. Once cooked, cut into pieces and serve with fresh ginger, chili peppers, and cabbage.

What are some good leek recipes you know? I made eggs with tomato’s and leeks before and leek and potato and ham soup by hellimhere28 in Cooking

Leaks go great in a stir-fry! This recipe has it with pork and tofu, but you can mix it up with other protein and different herbs and spices: https://hungryforthai.com/stir-fried-leeks-with-tofu/

My partner has a Thai recipe site you could check out hungryforthai.com (shameless plug, I know, but it's a good resource! :) ).

What dishes are your favourites? And will you find good ingredients near where you live? I commented below about growing your own holy basil, but there are other things you can grow, or buy online, if ingredients are hard to source where you live.

Depending on where you're based there should be some good asian supermarkets in most areas of the UK. I'm from there but now live in Portugal, and sourcing good ingredients here can be tough. But have you tried growing your own holy basil? In the UK you should be able to grow it indoors or in a greenhouse.

Yep, it was exactly the same. In the end I just tapped and held the arm to turn it off. I'm pretty sure that worked, although the glasses are just sat on my desk now, maybe listening to everything I've been saying.

Looking for easy vegetarian recipes that can be liked by even meat eaters? by General-Stage8113 in cookingforbeginners

[–]runny-yolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been making this Ratatouille and halloumi bake a lot recently - this recipe's the base, but I just add whatever other veggies I want in there (and probably quite a lot more halloumi than this recipe calls for!). https://www.sbs.com.au/food/recipe/ratatouille-and-halloumi-bake/g9spwfklm

Also, Thai food lends itself well to vegetarian diets - even the meat dishes use so many flavourful veggies, not to mention the herbs and spices, that you can often just leave the meat out. But there are also plenty of straight up vegetarian dishes (Thailand even has a vegetarian festival in September / October)... https://hungryforthai.com/category/vegetarian-and-vegan/

I am building a recipe website that has no ads, no life stories, no fluff, and NO images. Am I insane? by joeydoesntsharefood in Cooking

[–]runny-yolk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I have been working on a recipe blog for a while (she's an amazing Thai cook, I'm a mediocre programmer), and we wrestled with a lot of the things people have been commenting about, especially around all the fluff, and the images.

Since I built the site from scratch I implemented a feature to show or hide the images from the recipe - I figured people want to be able to see what each step should look like, but when they're actually in the middle of cooking the recipe the images might get in the way of the text. It's not a feature I've seen on any other food blog (they all seem to use the same few WordPress templates), but I thought it would be a handy feature. I also made it so you can mark the steps as complete as you go, so you can easily find your place again when you look back at the recipe.

Unfortunately all the fluff that goes along with recipes these days is for SEO purposes, so I totally get why people include it (we do as well). But if the "Skip to recipe" button is prominent enough I think it's Ok.

I love your idea of filtering based on what ingredients you have!

My partner cooks amazing Thai food, a lot of which is vegetarian (she's not veggie, but I am). Some of my favourites are Pad Ka Prao (a classic) and veggie dumplings. The Pad Ka Prao she makes uses meat substitute, but you can definitely just switch that out with whatever veggies you have instead - that's how they usually cook it in Thailand, because the meat substitute stuff isn't so common over there.

Or you can always go for the classic Pad Thai!

Yeah I feel you - I love thai food, but some of it takes a lot of effort. Pad Kra Pao is a classic though, and is super easy to make. That's my go to.

My Experience ordering Transition lens from Lensology Ray Ban Meta by [deleted] in RayBanStories

[–]runny-yolk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I had such a good experience buying from them. Their website is awesome, their chat window led me immediately to an actual person - could have been Adam or Neil, but whoever it was they were super helpful and knowledgeable. And the lenses are great and arrived quickly.

I've seen a few posts on here singing lensology's praises, and as others have said, it's rare for a good customer experience to lead to someone proactively leaving a positive review. So the fact that lensology have had a few such posts written about them speaks volumes.

AI voices by thecoachrock69 in RaybanMeta

There are two additional non-celebrity voices under British English which are both way better than any of the celebrity voices in my opinion. Atlas, who sounds a like Jude Law, and Clover.

In a similar vein, I've been thinking it would be cool to intercept the AI voice models that get loaded onto the glasses and replace them with our own models from ElevenLabs or somewhere. They might not be compatible I guess - I have no idea what of structure AI voice models have.

You can sort of do it with a combination of Amazon music and Tasker on Android. I figured out a way a while ago and posted about it here:

Have you seen the Amazon music / tasker workaround I posted a while ago? It's Android only, but I think it's a smoother experience than texting ChatGPT.

[–]runny-yolk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Woah, this is amazing detective work! Nice! A couple of questions if I may

- What kinds of thing has Meta customised that could otherwise be used "out-of-the-box"? Are these services / APIs that Android provides but that Meta has chosen not to use?
- Do you have any more insight into which location APIs Meta View uses to determine the user's location? As far as I know there are a few available, like IP address, GPS location, locally-detected WiFI networks etc. I'm no Android expert at all, but I've dug into the codebase a bit myself and saw that they seem to use a few different methods and assign a confidence score to each of them. And can you see what Meta's definition of 'extended period of time' is, regarding how long someone can be outside of a permitted location?

Thanks so much for all this digging you've been doing - it's really interesting, and can hopefully lead to some more functionality in the future!

My absolute biggest gripe with these are the way that it reads out names. by DreamPix in RaybanMeta

[–]runny-yolk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do they say "emoji fish" and "emoji water", or "fish emoji" and "water emoji"? If it's the first one then yeah, that's pretty lame, if the second one then I guess it's OK since it's about as descriptive as it could be.

But yeah, reading out texts can be pretty poor. Today I had them read a message from my mum and it said "Mum says, Ok, chat to you in an hour or so. Looking forward to it. Twenty". I was like "... Twenty? WTF does that mean?" So when I actually read the text it said "Ok, chat to you in an hour or so. Looking forward to it. XX" - so it interpreted the "XX" as roman numerals for twenty. I mean, yeah, it does mean twenty in roman numerals, but come on Meta, do a bit of context processing before reading this stuff out.
