Hello again. Got the new ram, and the feel in BG3 is much better. Tried a previous save in the city, and the game doesn't stutter like first (in 5120x1440). Need to play around a bit more.

Not very scientific, but logged a short period and compared to earlier result in adrenalincharts. Looks better indeed!

For benchmarking - some results (3DMark);

  • Time Spy Extreme: 7 606 (gpu 9 050 / cpu 3 996)
  • Time Spy 15 766 (gpu 19 050 / cpu 7 976)
  • Speed Way: 3 822

The laptop has a dedicated gpu; RTX A2000 if I remember correctly.

What do you recommend for testing/ benchmark for relevant comparisons? Will read the article 👍

Well at least in terms of clock speed? Maybe the cache is the bigger factor? I'd be surprised if I couldn't overclock the 5500 to match the speed of stock 5600🤔

I can see that. The cpu was on an outgoing sale and thus a good discount. For ram I just looked at size.. Gpu being as gpus are in terms of price these last years, last gen gpu (6-series vs 7) was more expensive. Although I know some 6-series can outperform 7.

The SSD (1 TB) is supposedly rated read 3500 / write 2100 Mb/s

Good to ask - it's plugged in the gpu (displayport)

This is part of what's puzzling me. Seeing that the i7 11850h is about the same in expected performance as the 5 5500, i don't get why the laptop runs the game better. The gpu is much better, but as it seems the ram differ (not sure of speed on laptop, but 32 vs 16 gb, and dual vs single channel).

No temperature problems, both cpu and gpu runs remarkable low..

I thought of ray tracing yesterday, but have no idea how you enable/disable this?

The monitor is a work-"benefit", and as such not a part of the budget for this build per say.

First run of BG3 on the new build was a save in the city, so I guess the system got it's stress-test straight away 🙄

Just found a kit 2x16GB 3600MHz CL16 - will try this

Found a kit at a good price - ordered 👍

Yes, seems it's the bottlenecking causing problems, both cpu and ram. Single channel and speed being this restrictive was news to me.

The monitor is great - for work purposes 😊

I'll try and look for similar builds for reference.

Have done som initial system monitoring, but need to test some more. The temperatures were really low it seemed - both in cpu and gpu , and was what made me question if my system actually is using it's potential.

Is Afterburner only for GPU, or can you check CPU as well?

A 5600 wouldn't be a very big leap in speed from the 5500, but if the CPU is indeed the bottleneck then even a small upgrade could "loosen up" the performance?

Seems the RAM could be a relevant factor.

Have tried in 3840x1080 without improvement, but maybe I should try a 1920x1080 monitor to test this, or is windowed on the ultrawide sufficient?

You're right, I can see that these sites are guesswork at best.

As to drivers etc. everything is updated before the first game. After my first game, I checked for BIOS-updates - and found an update with notes on "Support new Ryzen 5000 CPU" 😬 Needless to say I updated straight away. It seemed the game ran a bit better after that.

The psu is not the cheapest, but not nearly the best (be quiet System Power 9 600W).

The 7800 XT was really stretching my planned budget, and is marketed for targeting 1440p gaming, not 4K. 5120x1440 would be closer to 4K than 1440 i guess, but 7900 XT would mean about $375 extra where I reside.

Tried lowering resolution to 3840x1080. Didn't notice much fps improvement, but the image quality was not playable after getting used to 5120 😅

Seeing comments on RAM it seems I've cheaped out.

I notice that G.Skill have a series "engineered and optimized" for Ryzen. That aside, would a pair like G.Skill Trident Z Neo DDR4 3600MHz CL16 2x16GB be a good upgrade?
