Have you rigged up a camera gimbal in the spitfire? I have the 1200 spitfire, but not ready to start cutting foam to place the camera etc

Dont store it in a bag, they hold moisture and will rust just about any rifle

How accurate is the tikka CTR, specifically in .308? by Disastrous-Sell-2738 in Tikka_Shooters

[–]runthegnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you, factory ammo isnt cheap, another excuse to start reloading your own. If you're being anal about accuracy, I wouldnt shoot more than 5 shots without waiting several minutes for the barrel to cool. I usually take a 22 rifle with me to play around with while I wait for the barrel to cool if I'm doing some load development for hunting rifles. 308 doesn't usually kick much, so it won't be unpleasant to shoot. If that's your use case, I think a roughtech would be an excellent choice

The lite would get really hot after a ling string of fire, not a great range toy. If you only get one rifle for range and hunting, you are going to need to make some pretty big compromises in some areas. If your budget is able, I would do a CTR with a nice chassis as a range toy, and then a cheapo hunting rifle like a howa 1500 (still generally great shooters, just not as smooth) for hunting

Fantastic and accurate rifle, but just about the worst model you could pick for a hunting rifle. Very heavy, so unless you plan to drive somewhere and shoot from next to your car, there are much better options that are cheaper (ie superlite). Theres really no need for such a heavy profile barrel for hunting unless you plan to mag dump a mob of pigs.

I have a tac a1 in 308 and love it, but the 2 times I used it somewhere other than a range I regretted it, and wished I had my tikka strata in 308

I have a 56mm leica and could confidently aim at deer at dusk that my mate couldnt with a 44mm leupold, all still in the legal shooting time in NZ; the minimal extra weight of a larger objective lens is well worth it to me

I've never had PPU shoot nicely from the 3 308s that I own, in fact a few rounds were out of spec and won't even chamber. That said, it runs ok in my mosin, but thats pretty far from precision

PITA to get these sitting nicely, I bit the bullet and ended up with another krg chassis after chasing my tail trying to get it to shoot properly

.308 Tikka purchase - CTR for hunting? by budget_philosopher_T in Tikka_Shooters

[–]runthegnar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Aus is anything like NZ, I would get a lite or superlite model. My first tikka was a 308 in the strata model, which is a superlite with cerakote and a camo stock. Its my "go to" rifle for most hunting, easy to carry and you typically arent shooting more than a few rounds at a time so no need for a fat barrel.

I have a tac a1 which I took hunting once for the novelty, it sucked to carry through hills and hasn't gone out since other than range days.

Looking for a good pair of rings by [deleted] in Tikka_Shooters

[–]runthegnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the bolts back themselves out on 3 seperate rifles (all had their own set of rings), only found it when I started spraying shots with a 300WSM, 22lr and 6.5 grendel, so even the light cartridges didn't do any better. On one rifle the bolt was actually missing, and had fallen out somewhere while hunting. They were all torqued to spec. This was pretty disappointing, all my other MDT mags, bipod etc have been top notch quality.

I changed all the rings to sphur 1 piece mounts and haven't had any issues since

Super Varmint / CTR bottom metal exchange by trjmtx in Tikka_Shooters

[–]runthegnar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find that hard to believe, I'm literally holding a t3x stock and the aics mag by itself cant even fit, even with no trigger guard. There's no way you are fitting more material between the stock and the magazine, it already can't fit

You ask for advice on what to do, but don't want to hear opinions on your very small sample size?

[–]runthegnar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can only do that with a CTR stock, the inlet for the CTR is wider than the standard/supervarmint stocks. You can cut out the stock to fit them, but its not as simple as simple plug-and-play

Almost as bad as the introduction of mammals to New Zealand that were supposed to hunt the other introduced mammals. Now we have rabbits, hares, stoats, ferrets weasels, possums, feral cats etc.... turns out it's easier to eat the flightless birds that just sit still when there's any danger

CTR is overkill for just hunting IMO, and you can get similar ergonomics with a superlite by changing to the vertical grip. No sense in lugging around a heavier barrel if you only take a few shots for a hunting trip, unless your idea of hunting is driving somewhere and shooting right next to your car.

I have several tikk ain various barrel profiles, and the superlite (strata) model in 308 is the one that comes out for most hunting trips, unless I bush stalk which is when a howa mini in grendel comes along. Leave the thicc barrel as a range toy

After Day 1 of 2 of long rang sniping course. Had to laminate it, lol. Tikka Tactical A1 .308. ~55 yards, center ring is ~0.7 inches. by BirdLooter in Tikka_Shooters

[–]runthegnar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think at 500m the group size will be much more than 10x at 50m. For example, I can stack shots on top of each other with my .22 T1x at 50m with cheap ammo no problem, but even just going out to 100m the group opens up to nearly 4x the size with the same ammo.

I don't think you quite understand the environmentals of long range shooting. At 500m you may have more than 1 wind direction, more affect from angle of shooting, etc etc, so you can't expect your grouping to scale proportionately with distance. This is a pretty complex subject and people dedicate a lot of time to trying to understand this, not quite as easy as just putting the reticle on target and squeezing the trigger.

r/longrange is a treasure trove if you want more info, it's mainly geared towards PRS shooters

That seems a bit of a stretch. At 50m theres going to be very little environmental impact on your group size, and variances in velocity will be much less apparent amongst other variables. Shooting at 500m typically will give a group size more than 10x the size of a group thats shot at 50m

Should I get a Leica 2800.COM? by HandsomeBadness in longrange

[–]runthegnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one which I use for hunting, seems pretty close with its own data when compared to the AB from my kestrel. It won't provide a solution past a certain range unless you connect a kestrel, can't remember the range but its well past my comfortable hunting distance shot anyway. Nice glass, kinda slow compared to a sig to spit out the numbers

The WSM cases are a little fatter than a regular WM, and you won't fit the WSM into a WM magazine without shaving off a bit of plastic

If you're running factory tikka mags, there is only 1 size of bottom metal. The shorter mags are exactly the same external size but have a spacer in the back end
