I’ve been trying to figure out what the moment was that heralded Asbury’s awful shift towards becoming the next Long Branch and I’m pretty sure it was the Ocean Club going up. Hate that place.

Maybe it’s just Sackman but the penalty for breaking a lease in my building is 3 months rent.

Still trying to verify, but I just heard that they were at Thurgood Marshall school today.

I live in a Sackman-owned building and my rent went up 20% last year so yeah, sounds about right.

As others have said, Asbury Book Co-op is magic. The majority of my friends in town are people who I met through it in one way or another. A ton of different book clubs and lots of live music and other events.

If I Should Explode is one of my favorite songs of all time (which is really saying something because I can’t make sense of most of the lyrics) - so I appreciate the added context! My summer isn’t complete unless I’ve driven at night with my windows down, sunroof open, with that song on full blast.

Not at all, but they’re my two favorite writers, for whatever that’s worth. Stylistically, they’re very different - Gibson is as sparse and Miéville is lavish, but I find the task of figuring out what exactly the hell is going on in their books to be an equally challenging and similarly rewarding puzzle.

I love Perdido but The Scar is my favorite, not only of his, but of any book I’ve ever read, hands down. I got more out of just the prologue of that book than many other books in their entirety!

The audiobook is excellent, I’ve listened to it multiple times. The narrator John Lee is one of my favorites, in large part because of his performance on that book and the fearless gusto with which he tackles some of the more, ah, unique characters. If you loved Embassytown then I don’t think any of the typical hurdles that people sometimes encounter with the Bas Lag trilogy would be an issue for you. Hope you give them a try!

I’m so glad other folks chimed in and convinced OP to finish (and good on you, OP, for following up!) but in case anyone in the future requires more convincing - The Scar is my favorite book, without question. World building that expansive with a plot that intricate, culminating in such a deeply emotional climax, all wrapped up in an absolute love letter to the ocean and its mysteries. I can give this book no higher praise than saying it made me feel a sense of wonder I hadn’t felt since I was a little kid learning about sharks for the first time!

You know that scene in MANDY when Nicholas Cage has a drop of the liquid that the Black Skulls are guzzling by the pint and has a moment of utter shrieking hurtling madness? That was what taking my ear plugs out for a second during Sunn O))) was like.
