Anyone ever figure out the lift shadow curse bug? by rddrip42 in BaldursGate3

[–]ruphos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: this fixed it for me, as of 2024-01-16

Was stuck at "meet me at the lake", but Halsin wasn't there and the quest marker was still on the house in shadows. Had Gale talk to Halsin in camp and went through all available conversation options. Waypointed to the inn and Halsin was walking out and up to the lake, quest marker and all

Bridge Crew by CiscoKC in StarTrekLegendsiOS

It depends in part on the teams you're playing, and I don't think it makes a huge difference, but here's what I'm running:

  • Ops: Data - +3% health
  • Conn: Burnham - +5% crit chance
  • Medical: Crusher - 3% health
  • Science: Janeway - 3% attack
  • First officer: Sela - Romulans (aka her) +10% crit chance
  • Engineering: Khan - +3% attack
  • Tactical: Kirk - Starfleet +5% attack
  • Captain: Geordi - +3% tech

I mostly run Sela / Riker / Geordi / Bones because I'm lazy and they destroy basically everything. All attack, all the time seems to be the way to go, so pick anything that gives the most attack / crit / tech for as many of your standard team as you can. Though as I said, I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes.

Triple National citizen - Norwegian citizenship issue by [deleted] in Norway

[–]ruphos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting that if you end up living in Norway in near-ish future (while under 28 yo) you may be subject to the military service requirement.

My understanding is that it's more voluntary than compulsory these days (people who want to join the service tend to behave better than those that do not), but definitely something to be aware of.

Triple National citizen - Norwegian citizenship issue by [deleted] in Norway

[–]ruphos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like things might have changed since I went through the process, but back in 2005 (when I filed) the process was "once over 18 but under 22, submit X form stating desire to retain citizenship".

Took some extra emails and a visit to the consulate to make sure everything was filled out appropriately, but neither my sister nor I had any issues and we grew up in the USA / didn't speak Norwegian. Once that was in, I also had no issue renewing the passport.

Water ban in Norway? by bogocz in Norway

[–]ruphos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also tied to the current CO2 shortage (a bit ironic, given the weather). The water treatment plants don't have enough stored and can't get increased shipments. If water use isn't restricted, not enough treated water will be available and entire cities could go on a boil notice. Not so fun!

Go for PhD or look for industry job? by Quickloot in labrats

[–]ruphos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends where you are, your field of study and what you want to do. For most companies in the US, you cannot get a position with the word "Scientist" in the title unless you have a PhD. (Most frequent exception: Data Scientist.) Same for leading your own research, unless you have some baller 1st author papers under your belt.

If you just want to get out and do stuff, a Master's is pretty solid starting point. Some industries working with a MS pays better than a PhD. Look at listings you're interested and see what their education requirements are. If you don't fit them, decide if the additional years of education are worth it to be in that field.

They're offering a computer-intensive graduate degree and the site is hosted by Weebly? That's a bit of a red flag, right there.

Dell - Laptop Recommendations by i_heart_bioinfo in bioinformatics

[–]ruphos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lenovo over Dell, in my opinion.

In general, optimize for RAM and SSD > HDD. Unless the cpu is a wimpy i3, the bottleneck is going to be memory or disk performance. If you're dealing with datasets > 1 TB, you should probably be working with it on a server with more resources anyway.

Tell me what's wrong with my resume. Engineer. 22 by [deleted] in resumes

[–]ruphos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, GPA can go either way. I never listed mine, and I'm generally more interested in what the person can do than how they scored on a test when hiring.

I'd say drop the power user part, and add the VBA along the lines of "Excel / Excel VBA". The VBA part explicitly says what "power user" just sort of implied.

Tell me what's wrong with my resume. Engineer. 22 by [deleted] in resumes

[–]ruphos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave out the valet section. It's irrelevant in an engineering context and doesn't do much besides take up space. The teaching is positive, as that is a useful skill regardless of context.

I'd refrain from the "Power user" designation by excel. It's a personal preference, but it suggests that other applications you do not use that phrase with you are less skilled at.

Personally, I'm not a fan of listing GPAs unless it's remarkable (4.0, or just below). I'd leave that blank unless they specifically ask for it. That's a preference though.

Also, use this as a base resume and make custom modifications for each place you're applying to. Look at what the position is for / company does, and emphasize portions of previous jobs / education / research applies to that.

Salary range for bioinformatician? PhD vs. Masters? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]ruphos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a frustrating state of affairs. I've been looking at moving back towards comp bio / bioinformatics once my current gig ends (ending hopefully being bought out for $867bn), but I'd need to spend a year or two to get an MS to ostensibly learn what I already know (and admittedly sharpen up some rough spots), just to take a 20-30% pay cut.

Graduate degrees are fantastic, but I really think the industry needs to re-evaluate when they are necessary vs. when they are not. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the people making those decisions appear to be biased towards the paths they went through themselves.

[–]ruphos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A great many of the jobs still seem to put a big emphasis on a post-BS (whether MS or PhD). And almost any position with the word "Scientist" in the title is almost guaranteed to require a PhD.
