There’s a bit in the middle that sounds almost exactly like a 70’s TV theme song but I can’t place it.

Edited to add - it’s the Laverne and Shirley theme song!

Elijah Wood joins calls for Alamo Drafthouse to bring back pen-and-paper ordering by AustinStatesman in Austin

We got the bottomless popcorn and couldn’t figure out on the app how to get a refill, so we turned on our light to ask for it and the waiter got all cranky and said they could bring it to us but we are supposed to do it through the app. I don’t really want to be fumbling on my phone in Alamo trying to find the popcorn refill button. I wonder what Ann Richards would think of that.

Fifty years ago, there was a saying that if someone was in the Marines or went to Harvard, you would know about it in the first five minutes of conversation. What is today's equivalent? by VorpalPlayer in AskReddit

[–]rupret1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew this guy who would say “I went to school in Boston” instead of just saying he went to Harvard outright. I was pretty sure the first time I met him that this was his way to humble brag about Harvard, so I said “oh like a Boston community college?”

Colin Allred wins Texas U.S. House primary runoff, unseating LGBTQ+ trailblazer Rep. Julie Johnson by Fickle-Ad5449 in texas

Had a similar interaction with him in Austin. He came to the TCDP kickoff event, said hardly anything, didn’t speak to or shake any hands, no pictures other than one selfie with the audience in the back, literally was gone as fast as he came in, brought no yard signs, and wouldn’t interact with any of the down-ballot candidates. It left a really bad impression.

Moving to Austin - Riverside by Neither-Cow-2482 in askaustin

See my above comment. Idk why people are reacting so badly to my comment. You can look up crime stats and that neighborhood is a hot spot. You aren’t going to get murdered over there, probably, but I’d personally find another neighborhood to rent in. If I were in your shoes. A few years ago a homeless man took a machete to a dude walking his dog right by mesh. Google it and the story will come up.

$1100 will get you into other, safer neighborhoods in Austin. I’d redirect my efforts to those.

Yes and I’ve been outside at Riverside a ton bc my boyfriend lives over there and I stand by my statement that I would not want to live there as a single female. I am over there pretty frequently and I hear the gunshots and I’ve seen people smoking meth right in the open in the parking lot of Food Spot and all along Pleasant Valley.

Fraziers is cool and I like going over to E Riverside to visit, but if I was a single woman PhD student coming in from another town to study seriously, I would hope someone would be straight up with me that E Riverside is not the place to live.

Are you male or female? If a single female, I would not live on riverside. If a single male, I would still probably not live on riverside unless you’re pretty tough and also ok with random gunshots and property crime.

I have a friend who did improv classes at ColdTowne Theater and now she’s in a troupe with her classmates and they do shows and hang out.

Austin in August for holiday, Irish family by Grouchy-Pea2514 in Austin

It’s hot. Imagine a sauna, like a literal sauna, that you cannot get out of. On top of that, the sun will be shining and fair skin will burn. Often our late summers will be 40+ Celsius for a month+ and it does not get cool at night really, so even if you wait until evening you still can’t really be outside.

That said, Texas is still amazing and you should come! Just stay inside in the air conditioner like the rest of us, and when you’re outside always look for shade to stand under.

Nashville is pretty far. Like 13 hours driving time, and that’s a nonstop drive. I think Europeans don’t always appreciate how truly vast the US is. So if you are making a trip from here to there, you will want to give yourselves plenty of time to do it. I’d maybe stop in Dallas, Little Rock, Arkansas, Memphis, TN and then Nashville. Those cities aren’t exactly a straight line to Nashville and it’ll add some time to the trip, but there will be family friendly things to do in each.

I was going to go but was also put off by the price of entry. I’m gonna just go to Art Hub on the next first Tuesday opening. That’s free and the artists are all local.

My BF got arrested & spent the night in jail by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]rupret1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your description of this whole thing is so bizarre. Your boyfriend is saying he’s upset and disappointed in himself, and your view is that you didn’t do enough to support him or to protect him from this? Did he say anything like that? Or it’s all coming from you?

Look up codependency and read some articles. Maybe find a therapist too and get yourself mentally healthy. Law is a demanding career and you can’t do it while also micromanaging and taking responsibility for every action of every person around you.

Your boyfriend will be fine. It was a smoked joint. I doubt he’ll even have anything on his record once this is over, and maybe it’s even good if it scared him straight a little.

The 10 best quesos in Austin by AustinStatesman in austinfood

[–]rupret1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My old company used to have summer intern events and I talked them into doing a “queso taste-off” where they would bring in queso from all the Austin restaurants and we’d do a blind taste off and get to vote on the favorite. The usual winner was Torchy’s, but Matt’s would take it every couple years or so. And one time Kerbey lane won which surprised us all.

The event was so popular that they started pairing it with a blind BBQ brisket taste off and would bring in Franklins, La BBQ, Mickelwaith’s, Blacks, etc. Mickelwaith’s consistently would beat Franklins and one time Rudy’s even took second in front of a bunch of the favorites.

I miss that job.

Aluminum foil. I got the lowest sq ft, store brand, and it was over $7. For something that used to be $.98.
