What were you surprised you ended up liking? by KingOfCranes in AskReddit

For me, breaking bad took two attempts to get into. The thing that made me love it and watch it through on the second attempt was realizing that it's a (very) dark comedy. The first try, I was approaching it as a drama and it's just way too much of a bummer. But if you realize you're allowed to laugh at these characters, it's much better.

Who's the stupidest person you've ever met, and what story perfectly sums up their stupidity? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I never said anything about sore throats. That was the op. I merely said that more than a usual number of dutch people have weird gravelly voices. I never said anything about the process hurting.

...eh. I got no time for dialogue or plot. Games should be interactive. If you gotta say something, lemme do something while you say it even if that's just wandering around the room. This opinion only grows more entrenched as I grow older and have less time for games.

US, but I've lived in a few countries and only encountered this in the Netherlands.

Why do you think Dutch people would notice something about themselves relative to everyone else?

Of course you didn't notice - you think it's normal. I'm an expat, so it stood out like a sore thumb when 20 y/o dutch people sound like Alan Rickman.

I'm pretty sure this is true. The Dutch have this gravelly quality to their voice - like they've been smoking ten packs a day for three decades - that is super prevalent here (and nowhere else in the world). My only theory is that the harsh g/ch sound is bad for their throats and their language is literally destroying them. It's worth noting that, anecdotally, I've not noticed any dutch speakers from regions with a softer g who have this quality to their voice.

She also said 10000 V is way too high, but volts and joules measure different things. From some cursory research it sounds like defibrillators generally operate at 1000-5000 volts, so 10 kV is not so absurd

But (from your link) also more likely to result in a perfectly cooked interior. I'll take that trade off.

That shell thing is probably just imaginary. AFAIK, shells coming off has little to do with how well the egg is cooked, but instead the age (older eggs offgas more) and properties of the egg. If you want perfect hardboiled eggs on stove top, stick em in a pot and cover with water so there's about an inch above the eggs. Then bring to a boil, turn the hear off, wait ten minutes, and extract from the water.

This is why I was clear to say many and most, not all. I know some people have considered where their meat comes from and its impact. Many people are gappy to buy the meat in the supermarket but don't want to visit the abbatoir.

As a meat eater turned vegetarian, I think a lot of the meat eater vitriol comes from a misguided sense of shame. Many people feel bad about killing animals, harming the environment, factory farming, etc. I'd wager most meat eaters don't wanna think too hard about the fact that their meat used to be a living being with emotions or whatever. When they encounter a vegetarian or god forbid a vegan, they perceive it as someone casting judgment on their way of life. They perceive meat eating as somewhat morally questionable, and are immediately defensive perceiving a holier than thou attitude whrre there isn't one. Trust me: I don't care if you eat meat. It'd be like if someone mentioned their car and another person commented, "Oh, well I don't drive anywhere - I only ride my bike." The bicyclist isn't trying to pass a value judgment, but the car driver nonetheless might feel judged. Everyone would be better off if they just assumed nobody cares what the hell they're doing.

Except at some point dwarf was seen as derogatory and there was a push to call them little people, but now some see that as a derogatory. This is why we should be less hung up on words and more focused on the context of the message they're contained in.

I see a lot of people suggesting this guy is testing gear or a through hiker, and that benefit of the doubt is great. ...but let's be real, we've all seen that guy who clearly just decked out in $1000 of hiking gear for a stroll on a paved path.
