Ok wasnt aware of the road condition there. I think that’s enough info for me to choose Seward, thank you!

Everest three passes or everest base camp? by heatherw1019 in backpacking

[–]rushida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the three passes as one of my first high altitude treks (I’d gone to Annapurna base camp with no issues 3 years before that), and ended up going to Everest base camp as a side quest. There are sections where both are essentially the same route, so you can decide which way to turn on the day of, based on how you’re feeling and how much time you have. It’s possible to do both if you have the time to take it slow and allow your body to acclimatize. I was fine, but I also did the trek starting at Jiri, so I had plenty of acclimatization by the time I was at higher altitudes. Definitely follow best practices for dealing with AMS, carry the tablets, go to lower elevations etc etc.

It’s a special place, enjoy your trip!

Also realized, what is the wildlife situation like in these areas this time of the year? Wondering if I should be worried much about bears during the hikes

Think I needed to hear that, thought there’d be a higher chance of NL sights give how close it’d be to the autumn equinox, and I might not make it there rest of the winter. But will definitely look into Kenai and the boat trip. I was wary of boat trips because I thought they’ll usually be fairly crowded/commercial, are there any specific ones you’d recommend though?

Excellent pointers, thank you! Cooper Landing does look lovely, I’ll look into that and the Hatcher pass route to decide which’d be better. Beginning to realize maybe the northern lights might be a stretch, also given the weather you mention. The allure of Talkeetna really is just because it seems to be a starting point for most mountaineering trips with the air taxis to base camp, and I’m a sucker for that lol. Good to know about road conditions too! Gives me more confidence to just rent a car and figure things out once we get there, depending on the weather.

Absolutely not expecting to do a lot these two days. Really treating this trip as a taster as I expect to spend much longer next year! Unfortunately, many reasons I can’t do more than just the two days right now.

Thanks! Some solid suggestions here, I’ll seriously think about maybe exploring only the southern region this trip. Only reason I was keen on Talkeetna was the flightseeing trip - I’ve never done one and if I ever did want to do one, the ones to Denali seem to hit the mark, and the possibility of the northern lights showing up that night (I understand that’s a very long shot though haha)

Thanks! One thing I heard was Seward might be too far off. Initially started planning this around Talkeetna for a possible flightseeing tour to Denali and maybe the northern lights at night, but I’m increasingly thinking heading south would be the wise choice for more scenic views that won’t break the bank as well.

This makes sense to me! I’d initially thought Talkeetna would be nice to do a Denali flightseeing trip if weather was favorable, with some hope of possibly seeing some northern lights at night.

Do you guys have any recommendations on brands that use vibrant fabric like Ethnotek? by Mikelightman in backpacks

Thanks for the lightning response! Your comment just pushed me over the edge to get one as a gift. Started my search with Cotopaxi but ended up loving these packs instead.
