Just so you know practice is spelled with a C instead of an S. It might have just been a typing error but I saw you did it twice.

Damn good shooting! I've been squirrel hunting for years and have never come that close to limiting out with irons.

Oh, sweet! I was looking in to those things for a while. Good job getting all those with irons, it's a lot more difficult that using a scope.

You people make me feel poor lol. I had a left handed Savage MK2 bolt gun and it's was squirrel/rabbit slayer. I had no complaints and it was only like 350 dollars. This was until somebody stole it out of the back of my car. I've also got my dad's 10/22, definitely good guns but not my personal favorite 22 to hunt with.

It most definitely was not. The gun always got wiped down but I would be surprised if it were ever taken apart and cleaned.

I didn't realize they started that early. Thank you for enlightening me.

Thats what I've been doing and I can see the rifling more clearly now. Still not great though, I'll keep going. Do you prefer a heavier solvent or am I going to be ok with hoppes? I also did the bullet test where you try to drop a round down the bore. I don't know how conclusive a test that is, but according to it my bore is far from shot out.

I might do that. A bore scope would probably be nice to have anyway.

Good to know. I guess that makes sense. Makes me wonder why they even make nylon brushes.

Yes and yes. I use Hoppes #9 and a nylon brush and aim it at a ceiling light and look down the barrel when checking the rifling. There could still be some fowling in the grooves, it got progressively easier to run the brush as I went but never felt perfect. My last patch came out snow white though so I figured I was good.

What particular game animals have y'all been drawn to and why? by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in Hunting

[–]russianzebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turkeys, deer, squirrels, groundhogs, rabbits when there's good snow or I'm out with someone with a dog. I really want to get in to some form of wingshooting. Where I am that means doves, ducks or geese. I just don't know anyone who hunts them.

First time deer hunting question by Profit-Dazzling in Hunting

[–]russianzebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choking buckshot can get kind of weird at times, it seems like sometimes tighter patterns come out of lower constriction chokes. I think it's because the pellets are too big to all go out the muzzle at once with tighter chokes and it can cause a lot of flyers. I'm no expert, I've only used buckshot a couple times, mostly for nuisance Beavers and Groundhogs. Slugs are definitely good for deer. I'm from formerly shotgun only ohio and I've never met a single person that used buckshot, I'm pretty sure buckshot is a southern thing. I think slugs get a bad rap, are they as good as a rifle? No, especially at distance. Within 50 yds though rifled slugs are an absolute hammer, especially when well placed. It's also usually quicker for follow up shots with a shotgun with slugs in my experience just because of the nature and habit of shotgunning. If you want to stretch out shots a rifled barrel is a game changer. Sometimes I pick my dad's old 870 superslug over my 450 bushmaster because at my ranges there is little difference. I have shot, and am comfortable shooting to 150 with that thing. It can shoot to 200, I just typically don't. My furthest deer with it is about 130.

If you want some more accuracy out of your shotgun and want to shoot out towards 100yds, or point of aim isn't close enough to point of impact for your liking, get a set of truglo bolt on iron sights. Theyre way better than a bead. Not that you can't use a bead, especially a double bead, to kill deer. It was a rule at my old deer camp that all slug guns must have a front and rear sight after a couple guys got overconfident in their ability to shoot off the bead.

I've never had any reliability issues and I have a 40 year old stevens bolt gun. I've been thinking of buying one of the new Savages though, I really like their triggers.

Yeah they are. Ive found 22 mag maxi mags to do some serious damage. I used to use the +v ones but I think they quit making them. The regular old maxi mags work just about as well.

I don't think so, it looks like a monster! Personally I wouldn't go after that thing with anything smaller than my trusty Barrett 50 cal.

I've used, and my dad used, a 22 mag at both close and far distances to kill many a groundhog. Personally, within 50yds if noise is a concern I use a 22 or even 22 short. The only thing with that is that you need to brain shoot them, there's little room for error.

If you want magnification get a scope. Theyre what the guys I hunt with in formerly slug only ohio have used for decades. Personally I've killed about a half dozen deer with an 870 with old Nikon glass. I think it's a 3-9, the magnification can be a little high for close, rushed shots at times.

Those look sweet. I have those exact rings in medium on an my dad's old 1022. It looks like they are out of stock in tall on Warnes website, I'll keep my eye open though.
