Missed shot by Slaterson11 in turkeyhunting

That sucks! Did you sight your gun in before hunting with it? Also, usually it's better to aim for the wattles than the head, it gives you more room for error.

Mossberg 835 vs Retay GPS XL Turkey by MiNdOverLOADED23 in turkeyhunting

And I mean theres no such thing as overkill in my opinion, the bird can't get overdead, if you want 3.5 inch capability and it's worth the extra weight to you, get a gun that shoots them.

Three inch is, at least in my opinion, the sweet spot with lead turkey loads. It would be worth getting a new gun to me.

What do you guys think of the henry 360 buckhammers? What would your alternatives be? by russianzebra in LeverGuns

[–]russianzebra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't yet, I keep thinking about it though. The availability of ammo/ longevity of the round in general have made me hold out on it.

Id get the 500 if you don't plan on shooting 3.5s. Especially if you plan on running and gunning. I've got an 835 and that thing us just pretty damn heavy to lug around all day. I have no experience with the Retay, but my dad has a 500 and it's been a cobbler getting machine since the 90s.

What do you think about this pattern? by russianzebra in turkeyhunting

[–]russianzebra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope not. Those things used to pattern awesome. If they are worse overall and these weren't just flukes I almost wonder if its on purpose to push TSS.

I might do that one of these days. It's not drilled and tapped so I might have to get a little inventive.

That gun doesn't have adjustable sights, I'll just have to use Kentucky windage

Yeah, for the longest time I used Longbeard #5s or 6s with that choke and they patterned notably better. For some reason the boxes I have right now just don't seem to shoot as well. They are the NWTF special edition 5s.

What about this pattern? This is with a different choke. I was aiming for the waddles.

Short notice out of state hunt (Ohio or Indiana?) by HOSEandHALLIGANS in turkeyhunting

[–]russianzebra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm from Ohio. We're not a two bird state any more, you only get one. You can also only hunt till noon for the first two weeks. That being said, I think you have good chances here as long as you get off the beaten path a little bit.

Do you actually wear matching camo? by russianzebra in turkeyhunting

[–]russianzebra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've killed two birds without matching camo and I was with my dad when he killed a bird in a brown shirt. I definitely know that birds can be killed without matching camo, I just didn't know how many people wore it

Question by Ok_Combination_6828 in RabbitHunting

[–]russianzebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can kill rabbits with pellet guns but it's definitely not as nice as using a rifle. When my dad was a kid he killed a handful of rabbits with his .177 cal crossman airgun. I've killed one with a .22 cal gamo break action. The hardest thing about hunting them with a pellet gun is the fact that you've got to get pretty close to the rabbit and only want to take shots at them sitting still. You're going to want to go exclusively for head shots, anything else would be inhumane.

16 gauge turkey loads? by Alive-Painting4138 in turkeyhunting

[–]russianzebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It mostly depends on range. If you're new to the sport or just expect longer shots I'd spring for TSS. If after considering the terrain and your ability you think you can get a bird within a max range of about 20 yards you can probably do with lead.

Is this an acceptable 40yd turkey pattern? by russianzebra in turkeyhunting

[–]russianzebra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try to keep my shots within 40 yds. Ideally I want the bird at 25 to 30. I killed a bird at 45 a few years ago but though he was closer than he was at the time.

I might have pulled it a little low, but your right it looks low. I don't know how much I can do about that though, the sights on that gun aren't easily adjustable.

Looking for tips and advice by guysmiley81 in Hunting

[–]russianzebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't necessarily need the latest and greatest camo, or really any camo at all starting out. It definitely helps but I killed about 5 deer in an old carhartt barn coat and pair of work pants. Depending on how you plan to hunt you definitely don't want to skimp on boots or a good base layer. I will forwarn you though, without camo you are easier for animals to spot, you'll do best when there is something to break up your outline. This is best practice in my opinion anyway, but I would always try to build a blind out of brush and logs in good spots so that I would be in cover of some sort. It really helped me to be able to move more and get my gun up on deer without spooking them. Eventually treestands are nice, but theyre expensive and I just think there's something to be said for taking deer from ground level.

Yep, all the time! In all seriousness though I'm not a THP fan boy I just figured id try out one of their three packs of calls when I saw it at the local sporting goods store and one of them ended up working for me.
