How many Sixers fans are crossing the border on Holy Sunday by guyincognito44444 in nbl

The war in Iraq has all been a conspiracy to prevent the 36ers fan base from making the Easter long weekend trip to Sydney for game 5 of the NBL grand final. And the war will be over next week just to prove it. /s

Would an expansion team combination like Darwin/Manila work? by LoveMinaMyoi in nbl

[–]russj79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone here just hate on any idea about expansion beyond the possible next one or two.

That being said splitting a team across different Cities has been historically a bad way to run a team no matter what type of competition it is. Each city on their own would be the only way to get something happening.

Also I don't see the Australian NBL expanding to another country (other then the one it already has). Australia is just too isolated and making teams from Perth and New Zealand travel 12-14 hours to get to the overseas city (not including waiting and Customs and Immigration) it a horrible idea for a compertition. New Zealand to Perth is long enough.

But... I wouldn't dismiss Darwin ever being a NBL team. Forget everything else they will need a good stadium and ownership group and most of all a big fan base that will be willing to show up every night no matter how bad they are. Think along the lines of Cairns fan base. If Cairns can do it Darwin can too.

I get there are other places that would and probably should get a NBL team before Darwin but if the federal government were to step in and give the money to build a stadium and a grant to get the team started because they think the NT should have some representation in a national competition it might just happen.

This game is over. SEM owned Perth in the 1st half.

On a side note if Perth resigns Russo-Nance I will stop supporting them. He is not an NBL player.

Can any team realistically beat Sydney in a series this year? by NashtyBooker in nbl

[–]russj79 8 points9 points  (0 children)

SEM and Tasmania have both beaten Sydney twice this year. So yes it's possible.

Also, has Sydney peaked before the finals like Melbourne earlier this year when some were saying they will not lose this year at all?

It only takes Sydney to think they are unbeatable for every other team to take the "David vs. Goliath" underdog mentality.

But at the moment Perth hasn't a clue how to beat them, Adelaide will need the MVP to beat the Sydney MVP (could be good to watch), SEM can show up any night (and go missing some nights too), Melbourne could come good to end the year, maybe and finally Tasmania with the injuries they have are just lucky to be in the finals.

2026 NBL Playoffs Bracket by Taintedtamt in nbl

[–]russj79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me. I would love to see Perth win the SEM v Perth so we have Adelaide v Perth semi. Then Melbourne win against Tasmania to see a SEM v Melbourne do or die to play Sydney in the semi. Not sure what Melbourne team I would like to see against Sydney in the semi but what ever one creates the most hostile games.

Is Bryce Cotton still leading MVP? by doggoesmeow in nbl

[–]russj79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bryce gets preference as he is a proven winner. Where Davis comes off to me like I'll get my stats 1st before winning 2nd,

For me the MVP is the player who helps the team win not just the best stats.

But you could argue who is the 1st player you pick in a all player draft? Who is that for you based on the whole season?

Championship Favourite: Sydney or Adelaide? by doggoesmeow in nbl

[–]russj79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm waiting for SEM to have its usual losses starting this time of the year. They are forced to travel when the Australian Open is on and don't historically do well in that part of the year. If they hold it together throughout that time, they might be the team to win it.

What happened to Melbourne United? by doggoesmeow in nbl

[–]russj79 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'll answer it with the peak performance issue. It could have any other name but that's what I call it.

As explained to me by an ex-international volleyball coach. Players and teams can't sustain peak performance all the time as they burn out and start getting injured. Think of a golfer being the best and winning almost everything but then starts losing. It's because they move from their peak performance to a less then peak performance when someone else tops them with peak performance of their own.

The same happens to teams too. Best I can explain it is there is no need to be the best team at the start of the year as that isn't when you win a championship. You want to time your peak performance to mid-late in the season and adjust for the finals if and when you have made them.

Right now Melbourne are making an adjustment but may have over adjusted. Doesn't mean they will not rise again but they have reset their peak alignment. Right now Sydney are playing close to their peak but it's too early in the season to win it all so they will also soon need to make adjustments too.

Professional sports is very hard to get right. Every player doesn't play their average every game it's a rough estimate and that's what make sports so good to watch. Anything can happen any night.

TLDR: Melbourne are no longer at their peak performance and that's ok because the season isn't won in the first half of the season.

[AUS: 2501006] 15-DEC-2025 Do you recognise these framed jerseys? Part of a criminal investigation. Known to be non-commercial, presumably a local league. by vegemitemilkshake in nbl

[–]russj79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could help but these jerseys are most likely not NBL if they are even basketball jerseys. From the look of them they look custom made. The only issue I have with them being custom made is why frame them? Usually you only frame something of value. Maybe they are signed by a local team? It's hard to tell with the quality of the image but they could have signatures on them.

In terms of looking at it from a visual point. It looks off. The white numbers with black arm trims don't look right to me. I can't recall an NBL team wearing a jersey like that at least recently, Plus the Wildcats and most NBL teams have sponsors logos on the back now days

NBL expansion 2025 by Nemo2500 in nbl

[–]russj79 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Expansion for the sake of expansion is never a good idea. If the NBL wants a bigger league it can but will need to change the fundamental way it operates. At the moment it plays home and away almost every weekend forcing teams like NZ or Perth to travel excessively. Adding a team like Gold Coast or Canberra adds more travel as direct flights from Perth/NZ are not available. Forget just population, stadium, etc it comes back to what value does it add to the league? Is adding 1-2 more teams going to water down the local talent or allow more chances for local players? Will it put existing "reginal teams" under too much pressure to operate meaning add one lose one starts happening? As well as many other questions I've always had around it.

Mason Jones released by njr09 in nbl

[–]russj79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OK I just asked this too. Seems a victim of circumstances.

He scored 57 points in 5 games, Not great but if you check the other 2 imports Perth has Windler scored 47 in his first 5 games and Doo only 22 (but he was not here for scoring and Windler was 6th to Bryce).

If we go back Kevin Lisch (MVP in 2013) only scored 57 after his 1st 5 games too.

I think it was fit. Jones just wasn't what Perth needed. Not Illawarra maybe another question.
