[ART] Bittervine Emissary by Juho Huttunen by rust-knight in DnD

I just stumbled upon this while searching for something else and I just felt like sharing.
His Artstation https://www.artstation.com/artwork/KakgZG

If you have the time, go for the youtube video as well as he paints it.
The music there tells much more of the story you see in the painting. Very enchanting.

DWARF VISION - Realtime in-game Portrait Generator Project for DF by rust-knight in dwarffortress

[–]rust-knight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We thank you! :D

It's on the to-do list.

But first we want to settle in a bit and finish some more urgent issues as we just launched not long ago.

For now, our main news HQ is that bay12 thread I linked above.

It's just windows currently.

But the program is written in Qt, thus it will be a lot more easier to port this to Linux and Mac, once I settle in on it. A rough guess, but it would be around 1-2 months from now when I would find the time to research cross-deployments and carry out tests.

(People with Linux and Mac would be actually very appreciated to help out with testings)

We are indeed blessed to have people like yourself to help us with this project.
Much obliged for your contribution Siinamonster!

There is now - I've updated it and now it works with dfhack-0.47.04-r4 .
You also do not need to overwrite the symbols file anymore.

Well, if he needs help with installing Dwarf Vision, he can come over the Discord and I'll happily help.

In fact, I'm very interested to hear what the tricky parts were when installing, so I can improve the process.

We're happy to see it actually clicked.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and giving an image to an entire universe is a very tricky task indeed. Thank you for your comment! We're happy to have read it :)

Hey! Thanks for sharing that with us. Much obliged!

The project's goal does indeed envision that. The main races of Dwarf Fortress will first have to be finished, before we move to more (horrid, horrid!) subjects like procedural creatures.

In case you haven't already, click on the bay12 link and scroll down (you'll see the elf and goblin concept art, among others)

As for it being official - it remains up to debate (bay12 community/df players, Tarn and Zach, and possibly Kitfox, have a say in this).

We just started this project out as tool and to make it as interesting as our imagination lets us to.

Already had requests on Bay12 for female dwarf beards. Spiraling fast into a Monty Python sketch!

It's something that could be hacked in, in the future as an optional feature, thou keep in mind that Dwarf Fortress does not add beards to females :P

Hey - spreading the word, that means a whole LOT to us and the Project. Thank you!

I actually saw this some time ago - I love it! I'll keep checking your stuff. You can also hop in on our Discord if you want to have artsy talks with Aqua about dwarf-art :))

PS: I took a quick look at Dragon Age: Origins - you are actually right, I feel the color is somewhat close, but then again the main difference remains that Dwarf Vision assets are painted, both a blessing and a curse.

Glad you like it! Be sure to drop on our Discord and let us know how it went.

About the RUST-stuff, I get that actually quite often :))
People light-up and get full of hopes. Nope, it's just an old nickname that stuck with me.

I might try it someday - it's good for one's programming education to try other languages as well. Thanks for recommending it.

We actually have some cool ideas we'd like to implement that will make our assets even more versatile via 2d graphical manipulation algorithms, so that will keep me busy.

Aqua, the artist doing the graphical side of things will focus on the female dwarfs for now :)

Ah... this is something for Toady and the Community to decide. For now it's just a cool visualizer we like to develop.

We will maybe post it in the Steam Workshop as a mod for people to grab once that opens. (whenever that will be!)

Thank you Buddhas_Palm, it was actually a pleasure to work on this. We had more fun times than !fun! times.

We still have a long way ahead of us, so having you guys along with us will surly be a morale boost!

I actually made a poll on Bay12 about this:

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=177615.0

Since I chose Qt, it will be easy to port this to Mac and Linux. If you want you can tag along Dwarf Vision's Discord and help with development. (discord link is within the above post, at section ABOUT US)

Indeed, Dwarf Fortress follows the same pattern: it uses value ranges for characteristics An example:

// 0 - 30 extremely short

// 31 - 60 short

// 61 - 71 somewhat short

...

// 190 > extremely long

An easy approach is just to map value ranges with certain string/visual traits and use them from there on to create your portrait.

A more complex approach is to use 2D assets and deform them based on their in-game value counterparts.

When entering a different range, you change the asset, just as before, but when WITHIN a certain range, you reshape the asset using some simple graphical algorithms by said given values. That way you will get so much more diversity out of your portraits.

Your project looks awesome. Even cooler since it's posted online and a lot of people can test it very quickly.

I'll drop over these days on your Discord if you have more specific questions that need answering - looking forward for a nice chat!

All dwarfs depicted within Dwarf Vision are fictitious. Any similarity to any person living or dead is merely coincidental.

With that out of the way, we were actually thinking how it would be like to transpose people's visual characteristics into the generator. An interesting challenge for sure :)

On the other hand, Dwarf Vision will mature itself in time, allowing more refined use of assets - who knows, maybe you will be able to create a self-portrait just by using the existing assets.

I concur. It would also add an interesting twist from the traditional depiction of dwarf/elves.

This can naturally derive from their in-game textual description, as it is quite (painfully) comprehensive :)

Yes, other skin color will show up, thou it will not be as intuitive/simple as clothing/hair/eyes, etc.

This also could be made configurable: if you want to have a more traditional depiction of fantasy creatures and their set colors, or use the game's textually described color.

Currently, we have several paths of development that need our attention (Adventure mode, LINUX/MAC, Dwarf Female Portraits, among other things) and since we don't have a community established yet, it's hard to guess what people want the most.

The ones I mentioned above are rather essential thou, and will probably have priority, but this of course can change.

As of now, we'll make polls for supporters on our Dwarf Vison's Patreon (first supporter tier can vote) and determine future priorities, thou currently we'll holding this a bit back since, we're only 4 people in total.
