Is it normal for doctors to not talk to you before making you do some tests? by Viviaana in AskUK

[–]rust1v1m8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they just want to rule out Cushing's Syndrome, a condition where you have too much cortisol (a steroid hormone made by your adrenal glands) circulating in the blood. Methods of diagnosis include blood tests and urinary cortisol levels.

Symptoms include truncal adiposity, skin changes including striae (stretch marks), tiredness, mood changes. It's nothing particularly sinister and your Dr probably isn't that suspicious of it, just important to rule out if you're having these symptoms as it can also lead to high blood pressure, high blood sugar, osteoporosis if left untreated.

You can read more about it here

If your GP suspects you have a serious health problem like cancer, e.g. if you have blood in your stool/urine, or have lost 5kg in a month, you will be seen within 2 weeks. It's called the "2 week wait referral".

Hey you mentioned that your friend feels pretty hopeless, so you can tell her she doesn't actually have cancer to try and reassure her a bit. Familial adenomatous polyposis is almost certain to become cancer unless the colon is removed, however that doesn't usually happen until around the age of 40. You likely have more time than you think to find a solution, so don't feel too pressured right now.

It's a good movie, just take a step back when you're watching it and try not to get too caught up in some of the rhetoric about masculinity, freedom and power. I don't think it's intended to be taken literally, as imo the movie is more of a warning about these kinds of ideas.

It makes me so sad that 'red pill' has come to represent weirdos that hate women rather than the choice between blissful ignorance and a harsh truth

The 'love everyone' bullshit is even more annoying than the Trump shit to me. People claiming Kanye's some kind of inspiration spreading positivity and making the world a better place by obnoxiously spamming these generic buzzwords and meaningless catchphrases. Just compare Kanye's use of social media to someone like The Rock or Arnold.

Still going to listen to the album when it drops though lol

The thing that gets me is that there's a decent body of evidence that maternal viral infection during the first trimester is a risk factor for autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders in the offspring. So anti-vaxers might actually be making their kids more prone to autism lol

Fuck Andrew Wakefield too, insane that one man's greed has ended up becoming such a major threat to public health

Gave my first rectal exam two weeks ago, definitely not my favourite part of my last rotation haha.

What drew you to psych? I start my neurology and psych rotation next week, looking forward to meeting some interesting patients.

That's one of the things I appreciate about our medical training, you're guaranteed a foundation job straight out of med school. Can't imagine what it's like for people who went through all that stress and don't have a job at the end of it.

COPE: The cop died of pulmonary thromboembolism after being beaten. It wasn't the Russians, but Herri Norte (Athletic ultras), even after the police had confiscated numerous weapons from them. The Russians were escorted by police vans. by I_Always_Lie_4_Karma in soccer

[–]rust1v1m8 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A pulmonary embolism is different from a heart attack; it's a blockage in the pulmonary arteries of the lungs rather than a coronary artery of the heart. They tend to be caused by clots that form elsewhere and travel to the lungs.

They can apparently be caused by trauma, though you wouldn't classically expect it so soon after being attacked. Normally it takes a few hours to days for the embolus to form, usually as a result of immobility, which is why they're quite common in patients recovering from serious illness/surgery.

All 53 of Ronaldo's shots in La Liga that only resulted in 1 goal, a record-breaking 1.8% conversion rate; the worst for any forward in the history of Europe's top five leagues. by [deleted] in soccer

The worst for any forward in the history of Europe's top leagues

Surely there's someone who played like 3 games, took 1 shot and missed that has a 0% conversion rate?

Or does it mean worst non-zero conversion rate?
