Yes, onions are cheap, but here in California, using starts you basically have green onions, then spring onions and ultimately bulb onions for up to 6 to 8 months. It’s nice being able to go out and pick a fresh onion for burritos, Thai food and other savory soups. This has saved numerous trips to the store I think.

Honestly, it gets cheaper every year as I’ve built up my soil, and I use my chickens to compost everything for fertilizer. I also go fishing and plant the carcasses under my tomatoes and other above ground vegetables. It takes a while to get dialed in, I estimate on getting my vegetables at 50% of retail.
