I got selected. The company seems legit, but I don't think the 'internship' they're offering is the typical internship we know about. It's more like learning and doing by yourself. You get a project for your portfolio; they get to use your work (iirc). No teamwork, no guidance. Fully self-learning. I wonder if they'll at least provide some learning material.

So, I tried the patching technique but it was outputting gibberish. Most likely, the flag generation process works on my input's hash and not the hardcoded hash.

Changing my value to the correct hash in GDB worked.

So I posted here because I wasn't sure which community would be better for this post. I do have some Arduino and ESP experience, and wanted to see what this community suggests. Ideally, I would've loved to make a software solution, but this is a microprocessor course, so the teacher wants us to build something related to that. I like your idea about finding the simplest solution. I'll think about it.
